'k ADMINISTRATION ir Perhaps ten years ago I wrote a short article which I called A Code for Amcricansf' Since that time we have, as a nation, passed through economic difficulties and political changes. Democracy has been tested as never before in history. Our democracy still endures. Free education, with freedom of thought and discussion, are still the birth right of our youth. What the future holds in store will, in large measure, be determined by the youth in our schools today. May we hope that they will carry onward the torch of liberty and enlightenment. As a representative of a passing generation I hand on to the boys and the girls of Sharon High School for their consideration the follow- ing which I still believe is a good code for Americans: I love my country. I love its wooded hills and its fertile valleys. I glory in its past achievements and in its present greatness. I honor and respect the memory of the pioneers, who in the face of danger and privation, with heroic fortitude blazed the way for American civilization. I honor our great states- men and scientists and inventors and captains of industry and reformers and educators, and I desire to emulate in my life that spirit of patriotism and service and devotion to duty which has contributed so much to national greatness. I love the Stars and Stripes, the emblem of my country. I believe that the Flag has always stood for justice and liberty and human freedom. I cherish our great institutions, our wise laws, our interest in maintaining hos- pitals and asylums for ministering to human need and destitution, and I regard the privileges and the blessings and opportunities which all these have given to me as a precious heritage. In recognition of all that I enjoy, I aim to be patriotic, to uphold American ideals. I realize, that, in view of what the nation gives to me, I have an obligation to it and to its citizens, and I am willing to assume my share of responsibility, to participate in all affairs for the common good, to place service above self, and to seek by my life and influence to do my share to hand down to my children a greater, a better heritage even than that which I now enjoy.
