Democracy has been tested as never before in history. Our democracy still endures. Free education, with freedom of thought and discussion, are still the birth right of our youth. What the future holds in store will, in large measure, be determined by the youth in our schools today. May we hope that they will carry onward the torch of liberty and enlightenment. As a representative of a passing generation I hand on to the boys and the girls of Sharon High School for their consideration the follow- ing which I still believe is a good code for Americans: I love my country. I love its wooded hills and its fertile valleys. I glory in its past achievements and in its present greatness. I honor and respect the memory of the pioneers, who in the face of danger and privation, with heroic fortitude blazed the way for American civilization. I honor our great states- men and scientists and inventors and captains of industry and reformers and educators, and I desire to emulate in my life that spirit of patriotism and service and devotion to duty which has contributed so much to national greatness. I love the Stars and Stripes, the emblem of my country. I believe that the Flag has always stood for justice and liberty and human freedom. I cherish our great institutions, our wise laws, our interest in maintaining hos- pitals and asylums for ministering to human need and destitution, and I regard the privileges and the blessings and opportunities which all these have given to me as a precious heritage. In recognition of all that I enjoy, I aim to be patriotic, to uphold American ideals. I realize, that, in view of what the nation gives to me, I have an obligation to it and to its citizens, and I am willing to assume my share of responsibility, to participate in all affairs for the common good, to place service above self, and to seek by my life and influence to do my share to hand down to my children a greater, a better heritage even than that which I now enjoy. W. D. GAMBLE MR. W. D. GAMBLE Mr. W. D. Gamble has been the Superintendent of Sharon Public Schools for nearly twenty-four years. He is very active, being President of the Board of Directors of Buhl Hospital, and officer in the United Presbyterian Church, President of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and a member of the National Edu- cation Association. He graduated from Westminster College, and is now a member of its Board of Trustees. MR. 1oNEs Since 1914, when he came from Martins Ferry, Ohio, Mr. Iones has served as Principal, with the excep- tion of 1919, 1920, and 1921, when he was Secretary of the Sharon Chamber of Commerce. During this time, he has been active in the State Athletic Association, of which he is now President, in the Music-Literary Meets, in the Secondary Schools Principals' Association. ln addition to these, he is a proficient golfer and enjoys hunting. MR. MCGAREY In one brief year as Assistant Principal, Mr. McGarey has already made a name for himself. A gradu- ate of Thiel College, he received his M.A. from Columbia University. He served as Principal at Bessemer High School for a number of years and was Assistant Principal of Tea- Neck, New Iersey Iunior High School prior to his coming here. lwlr. McGarey,s work with the Monitor Squad deserves commendation, for he has helped make it not only a more efficient organiaztion, but a more unified one. ir 'Ir ISABEL ARMOUR English II and III A.B., Pennsylvania College for Women M.A., University of Pittsburgh Certificate in Spoken English IOSEPH S. On that fateful September morn, the spirited multitude surged into headquarters to receive final orders and to prepare forthe attack that was to come. Equipment was distributed to our noble warriors, and hopeful generals consulted upon the strategy that was to be brought into play. The years of rigorous training and preparation enabled our troops to sally forth and triumphantly raise on high our Victory flag Knowledge within the ramparts of the foe. Everything in order, we began our methodical and often tiresome trek. Under the capable leadership of our noted officers, joyously marching to the strains of our Victory Song we were able easily to trample our hated enemy Ignorance , Kind Nurses administering injections of Courage and Will Power enlivened many of the slower troops, those who had lost faith, and those who had fallen by the wayside. Returning once more to peace our noble band sadly dispersed. Some to go on to higher training camps , to re- place those mighty leaders who must some day retire from our ranks, others to remain at home to care for those in urgent need of their aid and protection. Our tashs being completed here at Camp Sharon High , we, the Army of '38 , leave to posterity the torch of Knowl- edge and Accomplishmentn. May its cheerful flames never falter or fail to reflect helpful guidance. We challenge you, Juniors of i938 to raise it on high. ' PAUL K. I left you in the shadows With a tear in my heart, And the memory of you Still beckoning me on. r spirit i' CLASS I-IISTORIES i TO THE IUNIORS! PAT BAHEN A place for everything-and the junior class has found its place. We entered Sharon High's portals in September 1935, proverbial, terrified Freshmen. As we cast off our inferiority complex cocoons, we developed startling, new personalities. Our various members filled vacant niches in Sharon High's Hall of Fame. New names and faces appeared in school athletics, periodicals, interscholastic contests: new members enlarged our band and orchestra, and weekly most of us trouped down to mixed chorus, glee club, and minstrel practice. During our three-year sojourn here many new experiments have been initiated, fore- most among these the public address system and clubs for everyone. When we retum next year we shall be the Senior Class of '39, As we anticipate our final year, we strive to show that anticipation is not greater than realization. THE TRAIL OF THE SOPHOMORES Berry WAi.no Bein wide-e ed and curious the So homores have followed a twisted ath in their g , Y , P P , quest for learning. Attention was focused on them when they sent many representatives to the lnterscholastic Meet. Then up bounced the Frosh-Sophomore Prom, the first of its kind, su ested b these excited oun sters. Nothin it seems was too hard for these gg Y Y S 3 adventurers to tackle. Becoming more accustomed to the winding trail and to dodging obstacles lying on the path, our courageous band struggled on to a brighter year, finding their fame still rising. As the bolder ventured into various fields of activity, many Sophomore faces were recognized on the football and basketball teams. New members joined the band and soon learned what we set as our goal. Striving to help us overcome stubborn obstacles were the patient guides, ever-ready to aid when one of our band fell by the wayside. Parties, plays, and jolly times we shared with our friends, the Freshmen, juniors, and Seniors. Now, having completed the second lap of the journey, the hardest trails conquered, our brave band struggles on-on to success. GREEN: NOW RIPENED Ricufmn Cots We Freshmen have changed quite noticeably since we barged into Sharon High School, almost four hundred strong in September. Then we knew little about Sharon High School, or any high school to be exact, and about our studies we knew even less. Didn't we pull all kinds of stupid tricksf-getting lost, going up the wrong stairs, asking naive questions. For the first few days we always got a howl, Hi, Freshieu from the upperclassmen QSophomores, juniors, and Seniorsj as we walked home. Most of our first year has passed. We are losing our green exterior, and in its place there can be detected the first signs of ripeness. ttttttttt-kfkfk fffffmmnff Room 305-Junior Front Row-Lt-ft to right-Miss Olivcr, T. Donmlio, G. It you were to enter the auditorium on a Tuesday morning, you would find this group of girls busily engaged in the study and presentation of musical numbers, both popular and classical. The girls held a joint dance with the members of the hand, orchestra, and Boys' Cvlee Club at l-lallowelen time. They also participated in the annual minstrel show which dem- onstrated the ability that the Chorus possesses. Representatives of the club made up the girls' trio and mixed quartet-as well as soloists for the interscholastics contest. Throughout the year ensembles sang on various local occasions. Several members of the Glee Club were given the honor of membership in the lVIid-western Pennsylvania Mixetl Chorus which sang for the teachers' convention at New Castle. The credit for this in a large measure goes to our monitors under the leadership of Mr. lVlcGarev. This monitor system offers to all the students a chance to participate in school government. There are about ISO monitors serving, most of whom are Juniors and Seniors with a few underclassmen. The Captains, Council, made up of the nine squad captains, serves as an executive body for the monitors. Regular business meetings of the council are held. There were several meetings of all monitors this year and there were Problem-Solving lxleetings held for various squads. The monitors had several special activities, some of which were sponsoring radio broadcasts to acquaint students with the monitor Program, sponsoring an assembly program, revising the permit rules, arranging the bulletins in 201, and an all monitor party. nnmffffu-f I O nf-ni-ffmfnmf All too often the real purpose of our educational program is overlooked in the rush of athletic and social events. These, of course, are essential to any well rounded educational program but that program should contain a means for giving the student such training and experiences as will help him in his later life. lnterscholastics in our school is the niethod we have selected for bettering our students speaking ability, musical technique, and lurthering his knowledge of mathematics, historv, spelling, etc. This competition is of the ulinost value along these lines. This year in preparation for the county round-up we held the boy and girl contest in order to bring out the best the school had for the round-up, The boys won 9 out of I5 events. On Friday, April 1, our team supported us in our own auditorium in the sixteenth annual county round-up. Not only speakers, such as orators, essayists, had a part in the round-up, hut our musicians, mathematicians, students of history, Latin and students of general scholastic ability all performed. Sharon was victorious this year with a large lead in the number of points over other competing schools. Our future Barrymores and Cornells under the direction of Miss McMullen. put on a show that was extremely well received. Too much credit can not be given to the splendid work of the costuming com- mittee, to the unlauded stage crew for their settings and clever lighting arrangements, to the make-up committee, and to the publicity committee, all of whom helped contribute to the play's success. WILD KALWARSKI WALDO BELL MARSTELLAR SYSLO ON PLAY 24 GETS AWAY AGAINST FARRELL FK .' I ' l SYSLO GOES OVER ON PLAY I4 TO SCORE AGAINST NEW CASTLE Hamann nunnnn Not many times has Coach Stewart called practice with so limited material to work with as he did last fall. Graduation had played havoc among the ranks of his veterans, snatching all but four, three backs and one lineman. The situation called for a shedding of coats and a rolling of sleeves and with such capable assistants as Collodi, Barnett, and hffusser to aid him, Stewart formulated what he thought was a team strong enough to uphold the name of Sharon High. But it did even better than that as a casual glance at the past record will show. The cam ai n was launched b a victo over Dormont of Pittsbur h. Throu h a P g , Y VY , g g hard-fou ht first eriod the two teams battled without an a arent advantage to either , g ,P Y PP U side. However, in the second quarter, a pass Lucas to Mattliews accounted for a score, the only one of the game and Sharon won 6-o. Beaver Falls, making its second appearance on the Tiger schedule, met a similar fate. Held scoreless the first half, the locals brought into play a powerful running and passing attack which netted them three touchdowns, making the score 18-6. Rayen, our Tri-City rival, received the Orange into their stronghold but were dealt a decisive defeat. Halting every effort on the part of the opposition and scoring at will, themselves, the Tigers triumphed, 49-o. Oil City threw a real scare into the hometowners by outmaneuvering them for two periods before our boys could finally muster a scoring threat and check the enemy's advances. The Orange struck four times, all within the last half, and Oil City fell, 7-27. Employing a bewildering aerial attack to cope with a smashing offensive such as ours, Il smaller Greenville High eleven all but scored with this weapon before the possibility was stifled and they were held at bay, 38-o. Grove City has many a claim against the Tigers and one of them is that they usually outplay the locals before a game is half-way through. But the Tigers, trailing 13-6, hit on all eleven cylinders at once and ran wild over the Grovers 47-13, their sixth consecutive win. Through rain and cold, the Alma Mater again sent the scorewheel spinning, pro- ducing a result something like 31-0. The unfortunate victim in this case was Sharpsville, our traditionally tough neighbors, who found themselves outclassed in every respect. None of our opponents have been so discouraging and provoking as has Warren and many times has a cherished victory streak been obliviated through the efforts of those rugged Harding High teams. However, Sharon was tough beyond all anticipation and the visitors, having an exceptionally strong aggregation themselves, found it useless to struggle for more than a scoreless tie. The following week a highly touted Farrell team fared a bit worse when the Tigers romped over their heavy line and halted their puzzling attack in the embryo stage. Part of this was due to errors on the part of individual Farrell players but, summing it all up, the count was zo-o. Salem High, our opponent for the first time, proved no match for our overwhelming offense and the visiting Reds were scored upon with ease, suffering an 18 point disadvantage in the first quarter alone. The final score was 42-0. Of all the gridiron classics, perhaps none will be remembered quite so long as the game when Sharon defeated New Castle for the first time since 1921. From the start the Tigers elected to carry the fray right to the Hurricanes and after several efforts they succeeded in penetrating their end zone. Score 7-o. fffllll Hwtww FACULTY MANAGER GEORGE C. Although the 1938 team did not progress far enough to enter into state titular competition, it is well to note that its record for the year is no less impressive than that of its predecessor, which had only three marks on the other side of the ledger. Fate decreed that a powerful Farrell team was to crush our championship hopes by a very close margin at Thiel College gymnasium. As it stands, the campaign is all the more remarkable in that the teams who were responsible for the three defeats each won by an uncomfortable three points. The curtain rose to find our Tigers victorious in four pre-season tilts-DuBois, 41-21, Punxsutawney, 18-13, Strong Vincent, 35-253 and New Castle, 31-23. Of the regular season contenders, Grove City fell 52-23, Hickory, 42-18, Greenville, 41-22, and Sharps- ville, 46-26. Here an eight game winning streak was shattered by a heart-rending 28-25 defeat at the hands of Farrell. The Steelers presented one of their strongest teams in history and though the loss was disappointing, the outcome was not a total surrpise to Sharon fans. Thrown off stride only momentarily, however, the Tigers came back to beat Rochester, Mercer, and Rayen. In return games with Grove City and Sharpsvillc, the locals again emerged with wins 45-28, and 35-16. Farrell, seeking to repeat against the Orange in the return fracas on open court, hit a lucky spot right before the half, but a belated rally by the home towners overcame a nine-point deficit and carried them on to a triumph, 32-26. Cleveland South was secured on an open date and were easily taken, 53-29. Warreii, Ohio, our Tri-City League rival, like Farrell, was reputed to have an unusually strong aggregation, which fact they soon bore out by estblishing an eleven point lead over our boys. A gallant comeback failed, to materialize and Sharon dropped its second game of the year, 38-35. In rapid order, Hickory, Mercer, and Greenville were again disposed of and the closing game, originally scheduled with Punxsutawney, saw Sharon and Farrell again prepared to settle differences. A verdict in favor of either team conveyed the Mercer County championship in addition, and for obvious reasons this game was highly coveted by the two opponents. Farrell took an early lead and although it was never large enough to cause the Grange much consternation, it proved too difficult a barrier to overcome and as a result, the Steelers carried the fray, 33-30. Thus the curtain descended on another successful season. nfnfnfnffnf ftfffifftfff SHARON AT FALKELL SHARON AT GREENVILLE SHARON AT SMAYJSYILLE FAKKELL AT SHALON ffnfffffffff nnmfwfffn Track, the athletic activity in which the greatest number of boys participates, was elimaxed in 1937 by the Nlercer County and District IO meets, both held at the Sharon stadium. Winners of their respective events in their county meets were the contestants in the latter, which saw records in the dashes, javelin, shot put, and high jump shattered by better marks. The lVlercer County meet also brought one new record. The other meet in which the track Tigers participated was the Tri-City event, in which they finished second to W:11'rc111's great squad, but ahead of Rayen. Last year's outstanding performers were Eddie Cooper, Harold Hagwood, Lloyd Thomp- son, Al Gereb, Francis Colclaser, Ioe Lucas, Bob Fox, and Al Nichols, to mention a few. The limitations of track in Sharon High School due largely to the short time in which it can be practiced are well known, and one of the chief purposes of it is to keep athletes in other sports in some kind of activity. In this capacity it serves somewhat as a substitute for spring football. mufnffvmfu' ffnmnmfnff Ifnek Row-NIr. Barnett, Ivor Lee, lack Reyer, Arthur Waldo lfrunl Row-Enunct Whitehead, Iohu Ristvey. In a few short years that Sharon High has had a golf team it has exhibited real prowess. For the past two years it has won the District I0 team championship, while last year Austin Keaveney and Andy Seaman placed very close to the top for individual honors. In addition to that, the team won all its matches. Ilus vear the team is eoaehed hv IXIr. Barnett, IN'Ir. Currier having had to relinquish the position hecause of numerous other activities. Three veterans from last vear's team are back: Emmet VVhitehead, Iohn Ristvey, and Ivor Lee. Among the teams scheduled are Wlll'I'L'll, Rayen, Ivleadville, and Chaney. The first signs of spring found our future I-Iagens and Sarazens burning up thc links and from all indications this year's team will compare favorably with its predecessors. ffnfnmfffn' fnfmrffffff OFFICERS President .... ..,... Witll the establishment of the Sports Club, the feminine members of the school now enjoy that Privilege. Here is an opportunity for girls to receive physical recreation in a variety of sports, and in addition to that to develop real sportsman- ship. That this organization has been a real success is evidenced by the large membership and the great variety of sports offered. By means of the point system girls are able to receive the coveted awards of a sweater given to the five highest Seniors, and letter given to the five highest in the other classes.
