PEARSON FOREWORD This annual represents the final effort of this year's Mirror staff to give to the pupils of Sharon l-ligh School a year book that they will be glad to ovvn in years to come. We hope that this year book will fulfill this purpose: that the life and activities of our school be portrayed accurately and in- terestingly. CONTENTS FACU LTY CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISERS 5 ? Q QQ 5' +5 Q ,A fa g ST ig? -x 'ba ADMINISTRATION The American High School has become the peoples college. Graduation from it has become a common ambition and opens the door to almost all of the avenues of further recognized accomplishment. There are now some 23,000 high schools in the United States, enrolling about 5,200,000 students. This great host of adolescents is the clay for moulding America's future, in character, politics, social attitudes, home life, spiritual nobility, health, recreation, vocations, and citizenship. The education of these adolescents is potentially the most valuable and actually the most serious of our national enterprises. To successfully carry on this enterprise requires: boards of education who are fitted for so great a task, whose guiding principle is to offer to youth the opportunity to develop each his several talents toward a patriotic and sympathetic service under our democratic form of govemmentg skillful school executives of outstanding character and leadership, teachers hired and retained on a basis of merit for the task, as proved through character, ability and accomplishment, and a public that demands all these, votes for them, and is willing to pay for them. The attitudes of each succeeding generation will measure our success and determine the future of our republic. P. A. IONES I1 1 Eleven Slif7l'7'IilfI'Ill11'i'lf, W. D. Um ., 1, f, 7 tv..-.' 'fl-. fe : - S IN YEARS TO COME The history of the Sharon High School shows nothing but improvements and develop- ments. Our high school system has passed through three stages of development. The first stage was the building of a nine grade school in 1865, the attendance of which was 353, the second stage was the building of a three year course high school in 1870, and the third stage was the construction of the Old High School in 1905. The first high school com- mencement class was held in 1873 in the old Carver Opera House. The ground for our high school was broken in October, 1922. lt took about a year and a half to finish the building. The new high school was first used in May. I924, on the night of the Senior class play. The school had not been dedicated then and was not dedi cated until some time later. The high school was used a second time on the night of com inencernent, when 133 students were graduated. lt was the fifty-first high school com mencement in Sharon. The high school classes have been growing in size continually. Between 1902 and 1908, there was an increase from 65 to 313 in the high school attendance. In 1910, there were 288 students in the high school, in 1920, there were 540, almost dou that in 1910, in 1924, there were 730, and at the present time, there are about I5OO in o r high school. The members of the school board that were instrumental in the building of our high school are: C. H. Pearson, President, H. K. Becht, Vice President, W. Whitehead, Secre- tary, W. S. Palmer, Treasurer, H. Filer, and Miss Marian Love. Mr. Gamble has been the superintendent of the Sharon schools ever since the high school was built as well as sewing several years before that time also. Mr. Iones has served as the principal of our high school since the school was inaugurated in 1924. The school Solicitor was Mr. P. Whitla. There have been few changes in the teaching staff except a few additions. Mr. Raney and Miss Boyce both retired last year after many years of very fine service to the school and the community. When our high school was first opened, the seventh and eighth grades were included in the enrollment but the seventh and part of the eighth were removed before the end of the first year because of lack of room. ln the high school at that time, besides the classical, scientific and commercial courses, there was a trades department including manual training and drafting for boys and home economics department for girls, including sewing and cooking. However, when the new lunior High was built in 1930, manual training, sewing, and cooking were moved into it. Our high school has developed rapidly. until today we have first rate classical, scientific .ind commercial departments. ln line with this rapid development, we see in the years to come a larger and finer Sharon High School. We see manual training and domestic science, once more in our high school and extended into genuine technical and home economics departments. We see fine machine shops and room after room as samples of interior decorating done by our own students. We see physiology once more taught in our high school and an extended physical culture course where physical faults are corrected, so that our students might go into the world erect and physically correct. Perhaps we can have advanced classes for delving into the study of the problems of family life. The Senior class of today becomes the Sharon High School faculty of tomorrow, striving to bring these things to pass, and to make our high school a place for a broader and a better education. .1-' - 1' ' , if - .t1j.- 55+ ' -Wig. . OUR PRICELESS COLLECTION M.'XUDALlCE ROBERTS The deep sea diver emerged from the ocean and burst into words. l've just found a precious collection! ni ' H ' ' ' jewels, gold, treasures of a sunken ship? questioned his eager companions. No, he replied, a collection of people. Pt-oplc-P gasped his friends. Yes, people. But not ordinary people, he added, noting their expressions, these are students ol Sharon Higlfs Senior Class. The look of disappointment left his companions' faces. But, one of them ventured, you aren't the first to discover this class. Everyone has heard of Sharon I-Iigh's class , ,., of 35. I know. But I am the first to discover it as a whole. Other people have picked out certain parts, the basketball and football teams or the Senior play. Selecting single pieces ruins a collection so I have discovered the entire collection of the class of '35 and I tell you it's priceless, absolutely priceless. However, Coach Stewart changed the usual custom at Sharon llllll called a spring pi'actice in April. Nlany candidates responded and after a month of practice a strong eleven began to take shape. ln this squad Coach Stewart discovered several real Hnds . Among these were Mike Lyshoir, who was changed from a halfback into a strong center, Bill Donato and Iohn Popovitch, freshmen tackles, and Purnell Phillips, guard. The team swiftly developed and set the stage for the 1934 season by a spring victory over Butler High. The season opened appropriately enough with a 46 to o victory over an outplayed Scienceville eleven. However the inexperience of most of the Orange and Black team made itself known in the next game when Sharon allowed an already beaten Rayen team to score thirteen points in the last half and win I3 to 12. Our Tigers came back in great style the next week and defeated Greenville by the score of 46 to o. The one veteran returning from the 1933 squad was Bob Nlitch. He was the most recent chapter of Coach Stewart's story of great guards. Bob was All-County for two years. ln Purnell Phillips, Mitcli had an ideal running mate. Big, aggressive, and fast, Phillips also made tl1e All-County team in his Hrst season as a regular. One of the less conspicuous yet important cogs in the Tiger backfields of the past two years was Iohn Niec. Iohnny', played either half or fullback with equal ability. The broken Held running of lack Bowie gained many a yard for the Orange and Black. Bob Thomas, halfback, returns next year to contribute more of his printing, passing, and running to the Tigers success. Eighty-two 5 LOHBA snvsa , OGG ssgtmm V. The first county defeat came in a l1L'lll'l l3I1'1ll4lllg loss to Sharpsville on tht- Blue's floor. The one veteran around Whom this year's team was huilt was Ralph Burger. Although hampered by illness, Ralph was the class of lklercer County centers for two years. Serving as cofcaptain with Burger was Charles Diven. Chuck joins the ranks of the all-time Sharon forwards. Although he saw little action, the fight and spirit of Charles Wt-isei' niade this year's team better for the fact that he was a member of it. Ioe Glavey, one of the smallest forwards in the county, found himself overshadowed by giants, yet he saw enough service to get his letter. One could never he sure at what position Ben Iones might he found on the Sharon team: yet, regardless of the position or time, Ben was usually good for at least four points. After less than three weeks of practice Coach Stewart letl a small squacl into the Pitt lntloor IVR-et. The Tigers Hnishetl out in front with zo points in a fieltl of fourteen high schools. Five points were contributed by Bob Thomas who set a new meet record in the pole vault. lack Bowie aclcletl another five in the broael jump. A smooth working meclley relay team composed of Charles Diven, Bob Dunn, lack Bowie, and Ed Cooper, gave the Orange another First. George Thompson gainetl the final Five points by a tie for hrst in the high jump and thirtl place in the low hurdles. Such a beginning augurs well for a fine season. MLIUY opportunities are open for the Tigers to show their ability this year. First among these is Pitt lncloor Meet, alreacly won. A strong team will also be sent to the out- door affair at Pitt on May 4. The usual tlual meets will be helcl with Grove City, Rayen, and Vv'arren, in addition to the county get-together and District IO meet. Any Sharon men qualifying in this latter event will probably be sent to the State Meet at Penn State College on May 25. Ninety I il: Nincry unc,- flu!
