Sharon High School Yearbook I988 Sharon High School Yearbook 1988 AUTHOR TITLE DATE DUE BORROWER S NAME ROOM NUMBER 1 Stiaron Scfriooi Library Sharon. MassacmiseW Bfozm fUigft Retool Library Sharon, Massachusetts And on the first day . . . we, the class of 1988, were made freshmen. Thrust into a hos- tile world of upperclassmen, we had to famil- iarize ourselves with our new environment. Like little creatures we scurried about the halls searching for homeroom and locker, trying to avoid the traps, stampedes, and pitfalls that awaited us. 2 Still suffering from senior-inflicted inferiority as we entered our sophomore year, we were up to our ears in Gummy Bears.” We got on course, however, with a surprising victory at the Halloween Assembly. Displaying our immortal school spirit, we demolished the opposition once again with our spectacular Homecoming float. Class rings, class day — time was slipping away. Time slipped away at a swifter pace as we anticipated the thrills of a new freedom. Remember driver ' s ed — enduring the endless hours of third-rate movies, boring lectures, the sensation of terror the first time we sat behind the wheel of Taggart ' s famous automobile? What a price we paid to finally go where we had never gone before and do it behind the wheel of OUR car. 7 No longer intimidated by the daily routine, we began investigating the array of opportunities beyond the security of Sharon High — college mini-fairs, PSATs, guidance work- shop, SATs, achievements, and an avalanche of brochures from places we never new existed. They all contained the same topic sentence: From the Student Search Service, we have determined that you are a candidate likely to succeed at our university ... The choices overwhelmed us, but only momentarily. 9 So, aspirations of college entered our cluttered minds; there were so many things to think about. We continued to work hard in the classroom, but we never forgot how to play hard too. Dressed to the nines in tuxedos and gowns, we danced the prom evening away at the Sheraton. To top the year off, we hit Horseneck Beach and perfected developing tans, transforming us into golden senior gods and goddesses . . . The summer passed as always. For some it meant rest and relaxation. For the less fortunate, it meant slaving away at part and fulltime jobs. The work didn ' t end, however, as the day dawned on our senior year. This was it, the home stretch to our ulti- mate goal — GRADUATION. But it took great pains to reach that moment — fulfilling academic require- ments, taking and retaking SATs and achievements, tackling college applications and essays . . . It was worth it. As yearbook and newspaper editors and varsity captains, the school was ours. Walking tall, we dominated the underclass- men and enjoyed well-deserved privileges — use of the links and talking studies. As we cross the threshold of Sharon High for the last time, we look back upon the last four years as the best and worst of times. Images flash through our minds now of clut- tered corridors, earsplitting assemblies, a congested parking lot, and mobbed lunch- room. The space we once occupied may be reclaimed by next year ' s freshmen, but the spirit of the class of 1988 can never be surpassed. The Varsity Baseball Team started the 1987 season on the wrong side of the bench. But strong guidance from Coach Peckham led the Eagles to win the last 7 out of 8 league games. With Scott Brody, Doug Parsloe, and John Stamaris as co-captains, and the rest of the senior squad, the Eagles can forecast a very profitable season for 1988. The Possible Expectation, Hockomock League Champs. The Golf team was led by captain Scott Brody, one of four seniors who made outstanding contributions to this year ' s team. The three other seniors were Doug Parsloe, Mike Berke, and Mark Levitz. One of this year ' s surprises was sophomore Jon Winn who played phe- nomenally well throughout the season. His classmate, Charlie Haner, also played very well at his number six spot. According to captain Scott Brody, “The golf team is a great selection of fine, young men who can win a match on any given day, but just can ' t seem to win all at once.” At the end of this year ' s season, the record was 6 wins, 9 losses, and t tie. The ' 87 fall season marked the first ever for the Sharon Girls Varsity Soccer Team. And what a first season it was! Under the patient coaching of Jon Abrahamson, all 31 girls who participated brought new meaning to the words spirit and determination. Although 95% of the players had never played competitive soccer before, the girls worked hard, learned quickly, and ended up with an impressive 3-8-1 record. We say good- bye this year to senior co-captains Colette O ' Brien, and Jen Goldstein, who both brought experience as well as motivation to the entire team. Also leaving will be Haley Smirnoff, Mine Erkan, Linh Tran, and Ellen Gould. Halloween ' 87 proved again to be one of the most exciting days at Sharon High. Along with the tradi- tional Halloween witches, ghosts, and goblins, there were many spirited, creative costumes haunting the halls. One could bump into a Chinese take out order, a mermaid, a pair of beds, a tall-short man, a group of pink ladies, a sheet family, a bunch of California raisins, a group of visitors from the Wizard of Oz, and Pee Wee Herman just to name a few. The annual Halloween Assembly was a huge success with most of the students displaying their school spirit by dress- ing up. The seniors won the prize for the most stu- dents in costume and for the most spirited class. (No big surprise there.) Hey, there ' s always next year for all you underclassmen. Overall, it was a fantastic Halloween day! homecoming Top left: Homecoming Queen: Kara Zeigler, and Peter Butanowicz, Top right: Rachel Grossman and Chris Sued, Middle left: Marni Mo- delevsky and Mike Kramer, Middle center: Steve Litner and Alyssa Freshman, Middle right: Evan Ka- plan and Debbie Katz, Bottom left: Scott Rankin and Sharon Schles- singer. Bottom right: Adam Levy and Jamie Jacobson. The bright rays of the October sun lit up the faces of the Eagle fans as their team took the field for the annual Homecoming football game. Joe Generazzo got things off to an exciting start when he scored a touchdown. The halftime show led by senior Queen Kara Zeigler and her court, Allysa Freshman, Rachel Grossman, Debbie Katz, Heather Krent and Jill Schwab, lifted Eagle spirits to new heights. Stealing the show, was the victorious Senior class float. While the Sophomore class made a respectable showing in a close second. As for the freshmen and Juniors, well . . . better luck next year. The day ' s only disappointment was Sharon ' s loss to the King Phillip Panthers. 149 thanksgiving pep rally 87 The Thanksgiving football game a day away, Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors donned rally caps and strained their vocal cords, cheering the players on as they wrapped up the Fall season. Balloons, banners, and streamers cluttered the re- sounding gymnasium. In addition to the traditional shows put on by the cheerleaders and pom-pom squad, spectacular floor routines by members of the audience proved to be the highlight of the morning, evoking deafening hollers and screams, transform- ing the Rally into a gymnastics competition. The an- nual competition was won by none other than the unbeatable Senior Class! The sounds of soft southern drawls were heard throughout the Arthur E. Collins Auditorium as the Drama Club presented their pro- duction of Truman Capote ' s The Grass Harp.” Under the direction of the Philip Athanas-Brown, S.H.S. Drama Di- rector and Jackie Capell, Assistant Drama Director, The Grass Harp” featured Adam Goldman, Mitchell Green, Cindy Briggs, Alicia Leonard, and Carla Bolden in prominent roles. In addition to a large and excellent cast the production received strong support from the fine set made by the production crew, and the costumes, make-up, lighting, sound, props, and publicity.
