' Yfvwa gf 7 5 '1 June 1957 - Sharon, Massachusetts Volume XVII Subscription 81.75 7- 7- 'lf Wwffafnnfl Lmaia Forewowl We, the Class of 1957, wish our yearbook to be a farewell tribute to our high school. As we look ahead to the new building, we can see the aspirations and dreams of the past realized, and yet we can fully appre- ciate the opportunities and privileges we have enjoyed here. Our yearbook theme is Growing Pains and we salute this high school, for here we grew. Some of our growing pains have been over- crowdedness, limited facilities, and lack of various educational and athletic opportunities. We hope that many of these pains will be removed with the completion of our new building. but not too many. For through these growing pains we truly grew: in stature, in mind, and in heart. fl' M ,4 ' -5- ' iii- X 'I' s ..,,uUlIIllllllti - - X g qu xr- - .Eglu uu - wh Y Q is ,a , , , . r s se s- do--J f - f 75 ' T : j Q-asses ' A'-D? ? Clifford Schwab We, the Class of 1957, wish to dedicate this book to Mr. Schwab in appreciation for the help he has given us during our four years in high school. 1 We all remember the guidance during our sophomore and junior 'years when he served as our class advisor, the counseling he has always been willing to give, and the friendship which has always existed between us. We feel that the success our class has had in Sharon High School, and will have in the future, is due in part to the help which we have received from Mr. Schwab. -3- f al' rr 1e.W ,n-l'.gM YEARBOOK STAFF ?fr r sfvigf f: J , A-1 , J, f QF lg J ' if N ji 1 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF 4, 4 4,-1 ,Q fy!! , Lee Blyler if fs A Business Staff Literary Staff :' Bruce Brown-Editor John Andrews-Editor Q Robgrt Callahan Barbara Bengen Robert Freedman Virginia Butler 7, f Sheila Furash Carol Krepon ' ,f Suzanne Little Harriet Lillard Sandra MacPhail John MacPhail Kendall Patterson Eleanor Snyder Art Staff David Baskin-Editor Joan Apgar Barbara Bengen ry! aaa ng--I -11 Circulation Staff EG I 'i:: E I-:,....... Looking back over the past four years, the highlights we remember are not the clowning antics or the good report cards, but the teachers who have administered to our growing painsn. Their diagnoses and treatment have proved invaluable. Without their knowledge, patience, and under- standing, we would never be here now, standing on the threshold of a promising future. Now, endowed with a good deal more knowledge and a more generous dose of insight than we had when we were freshmen, we can appreciate the devoted efforts of our faculty. May the future classes be fortunate enough to have their learning imparted to them by such a Wonderful group of educators. -7- , , X N GRADE 9 - LATIN I Miss Dorothy Chase Miss Chase. The Class of 1959 is certainly a progressive and important part of the student body. Its members are found in most of the school activities, where many of them are officers. They are adept in both acting and public speak- ing as one can see in their active participation in Debating Club, Dramatics Club, and assemblies. They are talented in the field of music, with un- usually large representation in band, orchestra, and chorus. Their dance, Harvest Moon , with an autumn motif of scarecrows, pumpkins, haystacks and cornshocks, dominated by a huge harvest moon, was a smashing social success. We believe that they have much to offer and will be an outstanding class both as juniors and seniors. 5 5 3 Left to right: Linda Herbert, Treas- urerg Thomas Wells, Vice Pres- identg Cathleen Galvin, Secretaryg l Kurt Isakson, President. As we look at the Class of 1960, most of whose members were born immediately following Pearl Harbor, it becomes obvious that war-time rationing did not effect the infant population, for it is the largest class in the history of the school. It also has the distinction of being the last fresh- man class to enter high school in our present building if the new building is completed on schedule. The members of the Class of 1960 have shown a high potential in athletics, as well as in good school citizenship. They are conspicuous everywhere - on the basketball team, in the library, on the honor roll, and in the band. ln fact, their youth and enthusi- asm are apparent in ever facet of school life. Membership in the National Honor Society is recognized all over the country as the greatest honor a high school can award to its outstanding citizens. This organization is the pinnacle of success for a hopeful under- classman. Membership is limited, but capability abounds. On February 15, 1957, Lee Blyler, Bruce Brown, and Carol Krepon, as members of last year's Honor Society, tapped the new members. Six sen- iors, 1522 of the class, all of whom represent the ideals of the society, were made members: Carol Geissler, Barbara Bengen, John MacPhail, Harriet Lillard, John Andrews, and Sheila Furash. From the junior class, Carol Hunnewell, Richard Nuscher, Mary Rich- ardson, and Wilfred Kingsley, comprising the upper 51.2 of their class, were tapped. The Student Council is a twenty-five member organization with rep- resentatives from all the classes. This group is the voice of the student body. Under the guidance of its advisors, Mr. Benoit and Miss Burns, the Council has tried to solve the problems of the pupils. This year is the Council's tenth anniversary. It marks a decade of useful work and valuable service to the school. Some of the highlights of its contributions are the sale of school supplies, a ramp to the parking lot, Christmas Drawing Contests, Honor Study Hall Passes, and Citizenship Awards. It has also sponsored Care Drives to help needy people through- out the world. The night of December 7, 1956, found a nervous cast waiting in the wings of the high school auditorium C'What's my entrance cue? J and an eager audience filing into their seats as the curtain was about to rise. C'Gosh, look at all the people out there! J The play, Lost Horizon, .spiced with scintillating Tibetian dialogue, QShih, uy pei su wuj, was coming to life again. The play was one of the few serious efforts in senior plays at Sharon High School in recent years, and the cast turned out a performance that did justice to the dramatic Shangrila-ish plot, combining overtones of fantasy with suspense and tension. The play was the culmination of weeks of rehearsals under the excellent direction of Mr. Blake- hard work Cin- terspersed with coffee frappes, and group song-festsb. Unfortunately, just as the audience sees only a small part of the edort that goes into a play, they also see only a fraction of the people who work to present it. Besides the cast, the stage crew, student directors, proper- ties and costume committees, and publicity staff all helped bring the play to completion. 'fi 'w ' ' .1 P, ,fi ,J N Mi I hlffwf glint Ula? Every other Tuesday Hnds Carol Geissler at 11:00 A.M. pounding on the table in the Visual Education Room, striving fruitlessly to gain the attention of the exuberant members of the Girls' Varsity Club. Finally, after the entrance of Miss Haley and Miss Barss, to whom the girls wish to express their appreciation for the guidance which they have given them, the meeting comes to order. On the more serious side, the Girls' Varsity Club has become very influential in the school, emphasizing good sportsmanship in all phases of school life. Their activities this year have included dances after three of the basketball games, sale of ice cream at the evening games, and the sale of booster pins and beanies, both of which are colorful and increase school spirit. Each year they also assist the boys in planning and running the annual Field Day, the culminating event of the year's athletic program. As we go to press, they are making plans for the annual car wash and a card party to raise funds for the purchase of the traditional blazers for the outstanding members who are seniors. This public spirited group is a vital part of our school organization. GE : f - 1 , T 5 :Pie he ' .. uf? Activity period on Thursday finds the Visual Education Room in an uproar, with Peter Barrett threatening to lean on some poor member if he does not pay his dues and Joe Amorosino happily singing the Banana Boat Song . oblivious of the confusion around him. However, the meeting is soon called to orderg and everyone quiets down. Looking into the Boys' Varsity Club more closely, we find that it is one of the most worthwhile clubs in the school. Its aim is to benefit the school, socially, scholastically, and athletically. The club has carried out these aims through many projects, among which have been the sale of coke, pom-poms, and programs at the basketball games. After these games the boys have sponsored victory dances, which have been very successful. The club, now, annually sponsors a Senior High Talent Show and a Hal- loween Dance, both of which have been received with much interest by the student body. 'Working in close cooperation with the Girls' Varsity Club, the boys put on each year the annual Sharon High School Field Day. At the dance which follows, a trophy is presented to the class having the highest num- ber of points gained in the day's competition. Under the conscientious direction of David Rivers. president. and Mr. Gary Hall, advisor, the club has had one of its most successful years. 'T QLD 'fs f 1 .ff - 51 or US 7 if 1. . A . The group has been in existence for four years under the direction of Mrs. Edwards, who holds the group together and works to bring harmony out of chaos. This year, in addition to the group meetings of Chorus, twice a week, Mrs. Edwards has begun voice classes for the members. These classes give the students more indi- vidual attention to improve the quality of their singing. As the Chorus has improved, tfrom enthusiasm to skillj, it has been asked to sing at various public functions, a tribute to the group, and last year the organiz- ation gave its own spring concert. This year, the group spent the season on two projects: the Christmas program for the Fortnightly Club, and the exchange concert with Providence High School in March. Since the group consists of the cream of Sharon's singing crop , it is making steady advances and looks forward to future concerts with other high school groups. -441 Instrumental Music Program Still Growing When the rousing tempo of Souza's marches sound from the auditorium on Tuesday and Fri- day, when, on Thursday, the orchestra rehearses in the Wilber School, and when the sports band lets loose with Tiger Rag at basketball games, it is very evident that instrumental music is a popular activity at Sharon High School. This program is growing bigger and better every year under the capable direction of Mr. Philip Hoffman. Last year the band received a class B rating at the Southeastern Music Festi- val in Needham. This year three members from the band were selected to play in the South- eastern Massachusetts School Bandmasters As- sociation Band in Middleboro and five members from our orchestra and band were chosen to represent Sharon at the annual all-state Music Festival in Northampton. Sharon High School is proud of the achievements of the instrumental groups and hope that their success will continue in the future. As We look back upon the girls' varsity basketball season, the out- standing highlights are not spectacular plays or defense combinations, but well-organized team work, high spirit, and sheer fun of the game. Never before have the girls played with such enthusiasm and good Will. Many of the high scorers and effective guards are graduating this year, but the talented underclassmen will have no trouble filling their sneakers. SECOND ROW: Sandra MacPhail, Marilyn Zambella, Miss Marion Haley, Advisor Anne Pearce, Carol Geissler FIRST ROW: Cynthia Halkyard, Virginia Butler, Elaine Abber, Diana Meister. The cheerleading squad of 1956 - 57 added much to the excitement of all the basketball games. Selected in try-outs by the members of the fac- ulty following a period of intense practice in the fall, this year's squad consisted of Marie McGrath, Captaing Carol Geissler, Sandra MacPhail and Marilyn Zambella, who were on the squad for the second year, Mary Richardson, Anne Pearce, Carol' Hunnewell, who were new members, with Susie Butler, Cynthia Halkyard, Diana Meister and Elaine Abber as alternates. The girls, under the competent leadership of Marie McGrath, turned out several new team and individual cheers for the boys, both of which greatly boosted the morale of the players. Very chic in gold beanies, maroon and gold jumpers, white blouses, white socks and sneakers, they have been regarded as one of the most sparkling cheering squads in the Hockomock League. We hope that next year's cheerleaders will be as great an inspiration to both spectators and team as this year's have been. l X fl' S5 Nl Q xx 2 f-.ax Xu? x 'l '. FIRST ROW: Carol Huerth, Assistant Managerg Barbara Kelley, Managerg Dena Uretsky, Assistant Manager. Softball is a growing sport at Sharon High School, where every year more and more students try out for the team. As softball is' confined to the last few months of the school year, and therefore has a very short season, the girls must put their all into practice in order to compete suc- cessfully with other school. Last spring our team had a very good season, coming out on top in eight out of ten games. Some of their wins were as follows: 12 to 3 over Mansfield, 6 to 5 over Canton, 14 to 12 over Foxboro, 18 to 10 over Oliver Ames, and 9 to 7 over Stoughton. As well as making an ex- cellent showing athletically, the girls are line representa- tives of sportsmanship at its best in Sharon High School. ,Ll . ...I -: ,- .. .- Q.. A, . The crowd in the bleachers roar as a Sharon player clouts a long ball to deep center, driving three runs home. Coach Hall returns to the bench, giving his mysterious array of signals to the man on third while manager Feldman in his deep rolling voice calls out the next three men who are to go to the plate. This flashback gives us a picture of last year's varsity baseball squad, coached by Mr. Gary Hall and captained by David Rivers. The team wound up the season Winning six of its fourteen League games. Sharon High School was Well represented both on the road and at home by these boys who, through hard, clean play and good sportsmanship, brought hon- or and respect to the school. We look forward to an even better season this year be- cause many of last year's veterans will return and the team will be strengthened further with many of the junior varsity players. +59- Sharon Shines In Golf v. . ,Q ,- '- ,uf r ' . it . f 6 Q p Y is 9 I A Q A. They won six of the seven matches' and, in each of the preceding four years, placed second in the Bay State League. Although the team has lost three good players, it still presents a formidable threat to all of its opponents. Last year the youngest member of the team, Bobby Kirouac, won the Hearst Tournament in Massachusetts, and played in the national finals in Chicago. He also won the C. Y. O. tournament. Other veterans who will be playing on the team again this year are: Peter Kirouac, Captaing Bob Calla- han, Peter Meshon, and Peter Barrett. Last year the team launched a new program in which they organized an intramural league, and gave instruction to interested students to help maintain a strong team. We trust that Sharon will continue to excel in golf. - Z0 fi S. H. S. Has Formidable Track Team Q With a burst of speed the Sharon runner crosses the finish line, leading the field. It is with this same speed that Sharon has moved up in Hockomock League stand- ing. Under the careful direction of Coach Courteau, the track and field team has grown to be respected by the teams in the Hockomock League. In 1956 Sharon placed fourth in the Hockomock League, and, in the South Shore Track Meet in Class B, they took first and second places in the mile, second in the half mile, and fourth in the 100 yard dash. With almost the entire group return- ing, the track team looks forward to an even more suc- cessful season this year.
