BARIQCDWS We, the Class of 1956, wish to dedicate this book to our guidance counselor, Mr. Barrows, in appreciation of his patient help with our numer- ous problems. Some of us remember with gratitude the scholarship examinations which he gave us. Others recall the college recommendations which he wrote for us. Many recollect the job interviews and vocational conferences which he arranged. His friendly and understanding manner has made all of us feel he is a sincere friend of ours. We believe that our future will be more successful because of his diligent work on our behalf. -3- , 6' MR. I-IEQMAN I-I. RICHARDSON We wish to thank our Superintendent, Mr. Richardson, for the co-operation and understanding he has given to us during our years at Sharon High School. He has assisted us both individually and as a class in many of our projects and activities. ..4.. Pffinczpalk Message To whom much is given much will be required is an especially appropriate last remark for a high school principal to make to his gradu- ating class in the United States of America today. For no other young people in this world have been so fortunate by birth or by culture. None have had the opportunities that you have had. Consequently no other young people in this world will have to face the challenges that you must! And the responsibilities will. not just be personal ones, for the challenge to our Way of life will be at times almost overwhelming. You are our best hope for a sane and decent world to come. Mb, mr: -5- L . . 1 I ' m f'J tb' THIRD ROW, left to right: Mr. Melvin Stuart, Mr. Kurt Heinrich, Mr. Gary Hall, Mr. Ernest Blake, Mr. Harold Jackson, Mr. Joseph Courteau, Mr. George Quinn, Mr. John Barrows, Mr. William Konsavage. SECOND ROW: Mr. Walter Billings, Mr. Francis Roman, Mrs. Lillian Reardon, Mrs. Catherine Hoffman, Miss Marion Haley, Mrs. Julia Barry, Mrs. Eleanor Edwards, Miss Dorris Newton. The Faculty We wish to express our thanks to the faculty for the innumerable things they have done to help us during our high school years. They have toler- ated our caprices when these high jinks were ridiculous. They have quietly encouraged us when our world seemed to be ending. They have put our noses to the grindstone when our idleness might have led to diffi- culty. They have led us through the halls of learning in a patientfunder- standing manner. We welcome the many new members who have added greater variety to our school life. To the older members we wish continued success in their efforts to impart knowledge. Each of them will have a place in our memories in the years to come. -5- C5 A . 1 J N, Auf xx K f 7 I i ..,!g, ly ,X 1 ,Lx , an Q U 1 H gf, 'ff .- XJZF? ffiflv' A I , 4 ! f'y f-A Ltf X' u 1 -fp 1 ' ff ' 1' 3 , f ,' if W ' xf , -his - Ju ' 5 ' , V ,FH ?g,.,,1 ' ', A-:' 'g .3 'f 'Q - Z v- -x , 1 7 'Sf' - f ,1 ,TS-5-.i Ag.,-Sp nj I7 fry-,mn Xzgx-'irc fp! We understand the theme will be Moonlight and Roses, carried out by floral arrangements. Many individuals of the class have displayed unusual athletic ability, two having rnade the first string of the varsity basketball team, and several others showing promise on the second team. A number have given evidence of exceptional qualities in leadership and service as demonstrated by their representation on Student Council. And the fact that the class has captured first prize in the religious division of the annual-Christmas Drawing Contest for two successive years proves its membership also includes very good artists. We are sure that this class will continue to be outstanding next year. v -25- . Sophomore Class The Sophomore Class has proved itself to be an outstanding group. Last November the class presented a dance, Fall Festival. The theme was carried out very well in their decorations by the use of pumpkins, leaves, scarecrows, and fall scenery. At a February assembly program, the class presented a play entitled The Valiant , under the capable direction of Mr. Blake. The play, which was enjoyed by all the students and faculty, was a big success. In the Christmas Drawing Contest, Mrs. Fitzgerald's homeroom won second prize in the religious group this year. There are many members of the class with outstanding athletic ability. The talent of these athletes was demonstrated last spring at the Field Day when they ranked second in the competitive sports. We are sure that the mem- bers of this class will continue to be an asset to Sharon High School in all their activities. Freshman Class The Freshman Class, the largest class ever to enter Sharon High, is contributing to the school in a multitude of ways. Its members play on the sports teams. They are active in student government. They are a valuable part of our musical organizations. They help to make our social events successful. Their artistic talent was demonstrated when Mr. Benoit's home- room won the first prize in the non-religious class of the Christmas Draw- ing Contest. We wish them continued success in their coming years of high school. -29- L 1 T' S45 - gg. ,, SX 2' rl i D J L . i 1 -I . 1 1 ' 91 f S D. National Honor Society Admission to the National Honor Society is the greatest honor that can come to a high school student, for it stands for excellence of achievement not only in one line, butin every line of endeavor. Scholarship alone will not admit a student into the National Honor Society. To scholarship must be added serviceg to service, leadership, and to leadership, character. A student may, therefore, make all A grades and still miss the National Honor Society if he does nothing for his school or if he shows traits of char- acter that are undesirable. The membership is so limited that only the out- standing members of the Senior and Junior classes may be admitted, not more than fifteen percent and five percent respectively are eligible to mem- bership. These students who have attained this high standard and who have been chosen by the faculty to become members of the National Honor Society are, therefore, to be congratulated up the excellence of their record while in high school. Seniors elected this year were Richard Bonz, Lawrence Dingman, Anne Hayes, Duncan Oliver, Katherine White, and Joanne Winer. Juniors elected were Lee Blyler, Bruce Brown, and Carol Krepon, Those seniors who were elected to the Society in their junior .year were Robert Murano, Elizabeth Cilley and David Peterson. -32- THIRD ROW, left to right: Alan Peterson, Bertram Sacks, John Andrews, Arnold Shu- man, Bruce Brown, Kurt Isakson, Joseph Amorosino, Robert Bussewitz. Student Council This year's Student Council has been a fine asset to our school. It has sponsored many worthwhile projectsg such as, co-operating with the P.T.A. in the distribution of an informative booklet for parents of teenagers entitled It's High Time , directing a Care Drive, and establishing rules for proper dress at social functions. The Council is now in the process of revising the voting procedure for school elections. During each marking quarter awards for good citizenship are presented to deserving students who have shown outstanding cooperative spirit in improving their school. This year delegates from the Student Council have attended conven- tions at Cohasset High School and Silver Lake Regional High School. Last spring our school had the honor of sending a representative, Katherine White, to the National Student Council Convention in Pennsylvania. She returned with many useful suggestions and recommendations. This year we hope to send a representative also. The Student Council, advised by Miss Burns and Mr. Benoit, has been an outstanding example of student government at work. -33- 'IW .' X 0 3 f ' a I 9 L Q .-U. ' 0 M 44 WW' g :. Um' Hearts Were Young and Gay On the night of December 9, 1955, the Senior Class presented Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Under the capable direction of Mr. Blake, the cast gave an outstanding performance. Much of the success of the play was due to the excellent performance of Katherine White as Cornelia Otis Skinner and Bonnie Flynn as Emily Kimbrough, ably supported by the two male leads, James Cutler and Michael Callahan. Cherry Langstroth and Wesley Brookfield gave a con- vincing portrayal of Mr. and Mrs. Skinner. The cast was assisted by Howard Starr, Stage Manager, Elizabeth Cil- ley, Personal Properties, Hazel Levin, prompterg and many others of the class who did their share to make the play a success. We would like to thank Mr. Blake for his patient assistance and long hours of work. Our thanks also go to Mrs. Dann for the sets and costumes, and to Mr. Quinn for taking charge of make-up. Among the many projects sponsored by the club are food sales, student busses to basketball games, intramurals, sale of ice cream and pro- grams at basketball games, and purchasing of equipment for school athle- tics. The club awards jackets to its senior members at Class Day in June, and also presents a trophy to the outstanding senior athlete in its member- ship. Boys' Varsity Club last year worked together with the Girls' Var- sity Club to present the first annual Sharon High School Field Day. A trophy was awarded to the Class of 1956, which scored the most points dur- ing the day's competition. Jim Jones very capably led the club this year as president, with the help of Mr. Gary Hall as advisor. ,aw-Am .......-. l i sv -f 'V-, THIRD ROW, left to right: Marie McGrath, Catherine Roe, Marilyn Zambella, Sheila Furash ,Carol Cannata, Ellma Quimby, Meredith Speirs, Mary Keating, Sandra Mac- Phail, Carol Hunnewell, Geraldine Monahan. Girls' Varsity Club The Girls' Varsity Club was organized in 1952 and prides itself in pro- moting better sportsmanship and assisting with the entire sports program of Sharon High School. Under the capable guidance of Miss Marion Haley, who has taken a tremendous interest in the club, they have successfully completed many projects. Again this year maroon and gold plasticized book covers were sold to the student body. White knit hats with Sharon written on them also proved a popular item. The girls have organized the entire intramural sports program, providing various types of competition for all high school girls, and they have also organized the Junior High School intramural pro- gram. A new project this year was a card party, which was enjoyed by students, teachers, and parents. The girls capably took over the sale of candy at the teachers' Scholarship Movie. As we go to press, the club has many plans. Among them are two car washes in the spring, and, together with the Boys' Varsity Club, another Field Day. We are surely able to say that the Girls' Varsity Club has been a great asset to Sharon High School and will continue to be in the future. To date the team has won one game in the 195'Q Tech Tournament and needs a victory over Oliver Ames to qualify for the semi-final round in the Boston Garden. Winning or losing, sportsmanship has constantly been stressed. This group of girls has been a great asset to Sharon High School and has done a great deal to promote friendly feelings between Sharon and nearby towns. This year the girls have not had so much success as was expected, winning only six out of eleven gamesg but competition was keen and they deserve a tremendous amount of credit for the exciting games which they played. Bonnie Flynn, high scorer for the year, broke the all-time record for Sharon girls with 36 points in one game. She had a total of 201 points for eleven games. The junior varsity had an excellent season, winning eight out of nine games. Miss Haley has been a wonderful coach. She is constantly trying to interest more people in basketball and to promote good sportsmanship. We Team They 16 Alumni 10 32 Oliver Ames 32 45 Foxboro 36 . 42 . They unite us, the spectators, in our efforts to demonstrate to the team that we want them to play their hardest, do their very best, and Win. Captain Marilyn Niethold and the girls, with the aid of Miss Haley, have ably led us in the rousing cheers which have spurred our boys on the road to victory. Fight, Give Me an S, and Victory have expressed our feelings and hopes so well. We thank all the cheerleaders for their continual example of good sportsmanship and enthusiasm. -49- SECOND ROW, left to right: Diana Meister, Anne Pearce, Carol Hunnewell, Marie Mc- Grath, Helen Heffernan, Miss Marion Haley, Coach, Marilyn Zambella, Judith Feist, Katherine White, Manager, Barbara Kelley, Assistant Manager. Baseball Last year's varsity baseball squad, coached by Mr. Koskella and captained by Ian Mueller, was plagued with misfortune throughout the season and managed to win only two of its fourteen league games. Sharon looks forward to a better season this year, since many of the members of Mr. Schwab's Hockomock League champion junior varsity team will be moved up to the varsity. Though often on the wrong end of the score, Shar- on's varsity baseball players always brought honor to the school with their clean, hard play and their sportsmanship. -51- LEFT T0 RIGHT: Robert Kirouac, Michael Callahan, James Jones, Stephen Leedham, Mr. Gary Hall, Athletic Director, Peter Barrett, Peter Kirouac. In 1955 Jim Jones and Pete Kirouac placed sixth and seventh in the Eastern State Schoolboy Golf Championship. Since all of the team will be playing again this year, Sharon should be the favorite to win the Bay State League. Their opponents are North Quincy, Quincy, Needham, Wal- pole, and Norwood. At present no.one has been chosen to replace their former coach, Mr. Conroy. They are very appreciative of the coaching and advice from Mr. Edmund Kirouac. Track and Field Under the leadership of Coach Courteau, Sharon's track and field team, for the first time in many years, is coming out of the cellar of the Hockomock League at full speed. In 1955 Sharon placed fifth out of eight teams at the Hockomock League Track Meet, seventh out of ten at the South Shore Track Meet in Class B, and fifth out of eight at the South Shore Cross Country Meet in Class A. In the first meet of 1956, the State Indoor Meet, Sharon placed eleventh out of twenty in Class D.
