PRINClPAL'S MESSAGE Your graduation is at hand. You have reached another mile-stone in your travel through Life. During the past twelve years you have been offered an opportunity, through guided experiences, to prepare for useful citizenship. If you have studied dili- gently and entered into the other activities of your school's program with earnest en- thusiasm, you will have acquired for yourself certain skills and knowledge that will assist you greatly as you either continue with your studying or enter business or in- dustry. r I sincerely wish you every success in your future undertakings. Remember that your reward for honest effort is the respect of those with whom you will be associated as well as monetary gain. Sitting in front of our television set, we pressed the button marked Living Roo.n Entertainment, and sat back to enjoy the cur-' rent fashion news of yes- teryear in the discovered Marsengold. First, the picture of the entire staff flashed into view. Then, one by one, the members appeared in their outlandish apparel. Sitting on our atomic heaters in our soft spun-plastic dresses, we shivered daint- ily at the idea of wearing scratchy wool. Box-like contraptions at- tached to each foot were, we learned, what they called shoes. What a pity that Earthians of that era were not born with rein- forced soles as we are. Some of these so-called shoes had raised platforms to make the wearer taller. Whereas today one has but to press his left eyeball to increase his height, and to press the right one to de- crease it Ca favorable proc- ess in time of warb. We have presented only a small sample of what is pictured in the ancient paper, recently unearthed. More will appear in the following pages. Leisure Lite in 1950 By Robin A. Molecule Needless to say, the topic at all Skimmed-Milk-Bars this past week has been the 1950 Marsengold with its pages providing free jokes to all. Of predomin- ating interest to yours truly were the uncanny, so-called activities of these peculiar people. Two-fifteen must have had a great bearing on their nerve centers, for we read of mad scrambling in the halls for freedom. Strange that they professed tContinued on Page 261 IH4 0'Nl Third Row, left to right: Thomas Cleveland, Henry Hodgdon, Edmund Raeder, Warren Cole, Kenneth Ornell, William Jeffords, Robert Rodman, Arnold Mitchell, Robert Murray, Bruce Harding, Frank Dav- idson, John Pruett, Philip Bonz. Ruins tlisoloses Valuable Information June 8, 2000-Nation-wide hilarity was produced today as the 1950 Marsengold newspaper was presented at a premier performance on the screen of the-Luna- versal Cinema in Boston. Rocket ships were lined for miles around, with people holding their uraniiun- coated tickets in hopes of being some of the lucky Earthians to view the spec- tacular fantasy. Of major interest to the astounded public was the weird ap- pearance of this ancient race. There must have been a nation-wide shortage of razor blades as pictures disclose that they allowed hair to grow above their eyes and on the tops of their heads. Evidently the pocket had not been in- vented in 1950, as these same pictures show strange holes, probably used.. for extra carrying space' in 3 protruding structure Pe- tween what we determine to be their eyes and mouth. Small apricot-shaped struc- tures, projecting from un- derneath a mass of jungle- like wire, we assume t0 be ears. But how, we wonder, -did they obtain contact be- tween the sun and the moon without the aid Of o u r extended earlobes which contain built-in walky-talkies? However. these weird people must have possessed strange pro- phetic insight, for the Y91' lowed pages which have been unearthed contain prophecies of the group's activities twenty-five years hence, which we know to have taken place. We quote the strange document in full. CREW FRUITY FISSION CHEWING GUM Wg? Marsengold 1 . I 2224 ' P 22? Over the roar of blowouts, backfires and other me- chanical disorders, the procession of hot- rods was on its way at the amazing clip of twenty-five miles per hour-destina- tion, the land of awe and mystery, Nan- tasket. Ten traffic tickets and fourteen fiat tires later we renamed ourselves the Order of the Crimson Light due to the numerous stop lights we so blithely ig- nored. On arrival we trooped down the boardwalk, resembling a group of con- victs on their first parole as we cased the joint. Swami Zinglehoffer caught our attention as we observed her removing her teeth and swishing them in pink lemonade. Deciding she would prove in- teresting, to say the least, we entered her exotic retreat which reminded us of the north door at Sharon High. Pat Allen and Marilyn Jerauld were the first to breeze boldly through the curtains of the Swami's den. Bending over the crystal ball Pat yelled, Why, that's just an up- side down coffee percolator with the grounds still in it! The Swami, gently boxing her ears, said, It's merely a figment of your imag- ination, and proceeded to prophesy their future. I see you, Marilyn, bending over a hot stove holding a Clay pot, and Patty absent-mindedly shoving her four chil- dren away from her apron strings. Don't be so Willy-nilly. Next, please. Naturally Bev and Jean were dying to see in which direction they were headed. so they barged through the door, beaming from ear to ear, and said, What do you prophesy for us, Swami? Jean, she answered, I see you wheel- ing a four-year-old private patient into the operating room and into the very cap- able hands of Beverly Stewart, surgical nurse. Do I have any more customers? With a roar of squeaks and squeals the students gently pushed the red-faced Robert Murray and Eddie Baldwin through the door. Rising with a face full of pink lemonade, Robert stammered, Will you please tell us our futures? Just a minute, Swami said, I have to locate you. I see Africa, the land of dark- ness, and-wait! There, ambng the tropi- cal swamps, I see you both stealthily creeping through the brush in search of a crocodile. Oh, no, it can't be, they screamed, and fainted dead away! As they dragged these poor children away, Carolyn Bodwell and John Stres- senger, the latter limping, came in, hand in hand, looking very contented. I see your future in your eyes, - related the Swami, and now send your next friends in. Elaine Golden finally succeeded in breaking the door down and ran up to the crystal ball, with Davy dragging on the floor behind her, screaming, Hurry, I can hardly wait. Just a minute, young lady, your future isn't exactly clear. Here-wait a minute. Now I can see you hurrying through a newspaper office in an effort to get your column in before the deadline, with this young man still behind you. What de- layed you-as if I didn't know! Warren Cole gracefully stumbled in, carrying a typewriter, and asked hope- fully, What's gonna happen to me, Swami? Quoth the Swami blithely, I see for you a brilliant future as secretary to a beautiful business woman. Have fun! Mary and Roberta breezed through the curtain, followed by Carole and Shirley, and, rushing up to the Swami, were in- formed that their Maison de Guillet and de la Pratt on the Rue de la Paix, was thriving and leading the fashion world. Of course this success was due to their modele charmante, Carole Sacks, and the helpful designing of Mademoiselle Shir- ley Ritter. . With a screech of brakes, Donald King hauled up and elbowed his way through the curtains. The Swami prophesied that his taxi company would serve the cus- tomers of the afore-mentioned style shop successfully. Crawling out of the taxi's trunk, Skip- py Smith slid through the curtains whis- pering to his confederates, I got that ride free after all. As Skippy approached the crystal ball, Jimmy Gregory bounded in behind him yelling loudly- We ain't got no future, Swami. After a glance in the crystal ball, color drained out of the Swami's face and she sadly confirmed the statement. A shower of rice was thrown as Phil Bonz and Gwen Peters, the class love- birds, waltzed in. Suddenly a white cot- tage, equipped with picket fence and ivy, materialized in the crystal ball. Does 22 . '123'-33' Marsengold 2224 ' 'f 22? g that satisfy you, my children? Swami asked, replacing her teeth. As Stanley Parrish and Jeff Chamber- lain glided sophisticatedly through the door, pennies were thrown at the two class entertainers in hopes that they would do a toe dance for the audience. Your prophecy is in your faces, intoned the Swami as she turned away. Elizabeth Hurley dove through the cur- tains and gasped excitedly, Where does my future lie? In the Norwood Arena, the Swami said, as the first woman winner of the three-day endurance stock-car race, with Edmund Raeder setting the pace on his trusty bicycle. I do believe that's John Pruett sitting in the timer's box. No wonder Sharon won. Eleanor Maria, with Eleanor Niethold tagging behind her, blithely jumped over the barrels of pinl-l lemonade, and screamed, Do we have a future, Swami? I see stacks of silver piled in front of Eleanor Maria's cashier desk which were profits gained from the mouth-watering food served by Eleanor Niethold. Pushing timidly forward, Anne Graham blushingly asked the Swami what the fu- ture held for her. Swami gazed in and de- scribed the view which she beheld. A spectacular ice ballet with you as its star, she exclaimed. I hope the ice is thick enough! As Anne made her way out, Tommy Markt leaped into the den. The crystal quickly focused. I see you driving your father's oil truck with a sign saying 'No Riders'. Who's the passenger, Tommy? Trying to overcome the onrush of his classmates, Kenny Ornell quietly entered the room to have his future prophesied. The Swami related, You 'are pictured dressed in the military uniform of a chap- lain, proceeding through your chapel. Have I foreseen your hopes of the future correctly, Kenny? The group was pushed apart as Tommy Cleveland's and Jimmy Hagan's broad shoulders were seen boldly edging their way in. The Swami, without hesitation, exclaimed, 'We1l, if it isn't the stars of the Scintillating Celtics, champion bas- ketball team of the world-Have you en- tered the Brockton Tournament yet, boys? Along with you fellows, I see your crack cheerleaders, Amber Ehrisman and Beverly Fakkel, the best cheerleaders for the best team ever. Then the Swami took a quick peek in the crystal ball andusaw the two univer- sally famous scientists, John Deltano and Bruce Harding, diligently working on a formula for the oxygen bomb. In the same laboratory, Guy Littlefield and Robert Rodman were mixing a witch's brew in a giant coke glass, courtesy of Moulton's. Thank you. Their ever-ready secretaries, Margaret and Marie Minerva, could be seen typing laboriously in the offices of the atomic heater company, now and then dipping their hands into the cold freezer next to their desks. As the Swami lifted her head, in came Robert Feist and Charlie Goodwin with their elevator shoes. Speak not, said the Swami, for I see you marching down South Main Street, carrying signs adver- tising the Empire State Building. Arnold Mitchell and Ronald Hull, with Pat White between them, were the next in line. The Swami exclaimed, Well, if it isn't Pat and Ronny, stars of the Arnold Mitchell production, Sally, Slave Girl of the Siberian Salt Mines? Bill Jeffords swaggered in, adjusting his bell-bottom trousers. Ah-hah, said the Swami, I see you drawing lots to de- cide which port to head for next. Why don't you give the cold girls in Chile a break, Bill? Pushing the button that pushes the but- tons, in other words their husbands, Jean- ette McDonald and Joan Steinmetz were next pictured in the crystal ball, as they applied corn plasters to their housemaid's knees. Green rolling hills and red barns were next seen in the upside down coffee per- colator as the Swami pantingly wiped her brow Qwhat there was of ith. Why that's farmer Robert Lowden, she cried. And who is that nurse with him? Why, its Evelyn Shankman, injecting his animals with small pox serum. I have prophesied my last future, I hope, sighed the Swami. No, you forgot us, screamed Hank, Itchy, and Frank as they crowded her back to her magic globe. So I have, so I have, she said unen- thusiastically. I see you boys as teachers in your former Alma Mater. You, Rich- ard Butler, teaching English, you, Henry Hodgdon, as a gym teacher, and you, Frank Davidson, as mechanical drawing instructorf' As the Class of 1950 made their way gratefully into the clean, cool night air, they waved goodbye to the Swami, who certainly wasn't much to look at but just radiated personality! While our afternoon snack consists of carrots, asparagus, and turnip juice- shakes to generate vitality, they are known to have drunk frefrain from gig- glingj cokes. What possible nourish- ment could they have derived from this uninviting-looking brownish concoction? Our first consideration after leaving school is to hang by our thumbs to de- velop our muscles whereas the afternoon entertainment of the nineteen-fiftians was pursued at Moulton's, this being the neighborhood haunt. On arriving, the 'males of the species would commence to ogle the females Cso-called glamour girlsl to whom we wouldn't give a second look. This behavior was known as drugstore cowboyism. After seeing the attire of these males, we question the validity of their titles. But customs change, and so does leisure life. SENIOR PLAY GREAT SUCCESS On December 9, 1949, the class presented the annual senior play entitled Don't Take My Penny . The cast, under the capable direction of Miss Dorothy Chase, gave an outstanding performance. Properties, costumes, make-up, publicity, and ticket committees, together with the stage man- agers, electricians and the messenger did their share in making the pro- duction a success. Everyone worked long hours, but the splendid cooper- ation on the part of all made' the work fun. We wish to thank Mrs. Douglas Norwood, who offered her assistance as make-up director, and also our parents and friends who shared our en- thusiasm and helped to make the play the success it was. Most of all, however, we wish to express our appreciation to Miss Chase for her patience and invaluable assistance throughout our rehearsals. We are indeed grateful for the direction she gave us. 35 Marsengold 4. ly A Second Row, left to right: Mr. Harold Clark, Sponsor, Howard White, Robert Rodman Paul Vitali, Roberta Guillet. Under the able leadership of Mr. Harold A. Clark, our principal, its members have shown themselves outstanding in the qualities for which they are selected: character, scholarship, leadership, and service. - The seven new members of the Society, consisting of five seniors and two juniors, were installed by Gwenith Peters and Philip Bonz, who were chosen in their junior year. DEMOCRACY AT WORK IN SHARON HIGH Under the untiring efforts of Miss Barbara Burns, the Student Council has become the central organization of Sharon High School. Their under- takings this year include the presentation of the question of season tickets to the student body, the selling of candy at basketball games, the sponsor- ing of a drive for children's clothing, the appointing of student monitors for traffic duty, and the revising of their four-year-old constitution. Each Wednesday they inform the student body at chapel, which they conduct, of the mat- ' ters discussed at the Council meeting of that week. They' are planning to attend a f meeting of the Southeastern Branch of the Associated Bodies of the Councils of Massa- ' chusetts and a state meeting in the spring. They should be justly proud of their ac- complishments this year. I 4- 1 g A iv-x f,fj! lil 37 ' lafw I N -Q' I 1' VARSPfY'CLUB Fourth Row, left to right: G. Griliin, E. Baldwin, A. Smith, S. GIRLS' VARSITY INCREASE SCHEDULE Although it has not been the custom for our girls to play outside of Sharon, they have, in the last two years, established a limited program with the schools of a few of the surrounding towns, for basketball is the favorite sport in Sharon High School. All those who participate show sportsmanship and cooperativeness in their playing. Winning a game, al- though it is important, is not the main.pointg the fun and friendliness are the greatest attraction. The teams greatly appreciate the leadership and interest displayed by Mrs. Keyes. ? It A . Sf' 3 an XV v 4' 41 Q M W-'E' ag? Zi? ,Z 4 P- wfn Marsengold :Eg . CHEERLEADERS SPUR TEAM ON TO VICTORY The cheerleaders of the 1949-1950 basketball season have done a splen- did job of boosting the morale of their team, and in arousing the school spirit of their classmates. Because of their many new cheers and excellent showmanship, they have, under the excellent leadership of Roberta Guillet, earned the esteem of the basketball fans of Sharon and surrounding towns. To the junior members, we express our hopes for another year of successful cheering, and our best wishes for loads of luck. 43, L . SHARON HOOPSTERS DRAW LARGE CROWDS The sparkling Sharon hoopsters, under the able direction of Mr. William J. Konsavage and captained by Thomas Cleveland, enjoyed only a fair season. Although winning only four out of ten league games, they played excellent basketball. We hope that the boys are successful in the Brockton Tournamentg and in the years to come, we hope that Sharon will rise to the top of the Hock- amock League. l , 52 - ' :X ! - fi M' 44 'NEW' Marsengold ,Y--'QU' .
