' V ' g Vx 'T ' 'gi . - A X 1' ' , B: , , -- x I ' 'Y , , CLASS HISTORY Come, gather around the old rockin chair while I tell the story of that wonderful class of 1949 of Sharon High School Well, it seems as I recollect when the kids Billie Bob Ball and Dolores Adams started in the First Grade of Sharon Grade School in 1937 During the first eight years there were several that Joined them In the Second Grade, Carl Alvin Allison Jo Ann Culp Bonnie Ball George Schmidt Harold Loyd Gaston, Elvin Groce and Harold Halley Miss Carol Hynes was the teacher in the First and Second Grade Let me see I can t remember any that were added in the Third and Fourth Grade but we had a new teacher, Doris James that we loved very much In the Fifth and Sixth Grade there were several added because the country schools transferred to the big city of Sharon They were Gerald Day Dale Lively Vina Miller, Dene McLaren Garland Taylor, Bob Wall, and .Toe Walker Mrs Patricia Evans was our teacher in these two grades She said she enjoyed being with us so she followed us into high school, which we appreciated In the Seventh Grade, Mrs Owens and Kenneth Austin were our teachers No one came into our class this year In the Eighth Grade Mr and Mrs Shryock were our teachers Those who joined us were Willis Routh Kenneth West Donald Barney At last we were ready for the big day which we had so much looked forward to We were to be admitted to the grand and glorious institution of knowledge that we had heard about which was good old Sharon High School As I sit here rocking and remxnxscencmg of the past I recall the first day when the green Ball Garland Taylor, Dene McLaren, Dolores Adams, Bonnie Ball Harold Halley George Schmidt Bob Wall Dale Lively, Harold Gaston Kenneth West Willis Routh, and Donald Barney The new faces that came in were A C Thomas, Nancy Roberts, Velma Lee McDonald Ava Steele, Howard McLaren and Harlan Hinshaw We had some real teachers that year they thought we were about ready to give up Those that gave up were Mr Harris Mrs Chaffin, and Miss Rolf They said they didn t want us for another year so they passed us on to the Sophomore Class, and left us At the beginning of the Sophomore year we at least knew what room to dash into and what bell to run on During this year, Nancy Roberts moved away and Bonnie Ball got married and moved to Woodward We also had some new teachers that year Mr and Mrs Doughty and Creech The Fall of 47 we came to school and felt almost smart Mr Lawson took the place of Creech We were honored with a banquet given by the Baptist Church During the four years our officers were President, Dale Lively Secretary and Treasurer Vma Miller and the Reporters were Ava Steele and A C Thomas Our sponsors were Freshman year, Mrs Evans and Mr and Mrs Doughty were our sponsors the other three years When we came back to Sharon High for our last year, it seemed as if we had been studying all summer, we were so smart We looked forward to this year both happy and sorry that thxs was to be our last year in high school Now we approach the time when it becomes necessary to make decisions as to what to do in life However, wherever we go though in sorrow or in happiness, we will always remember our motto The Higher We Climb, The Grander The View 7 . . X ' ' L K 1' , . x I, ' .g 1 .., T I . ,,..,,1n,1 Q ,H I ,,,, 1 . 1 , ' S . 5' P c, .A 2 SENIOR 4 H ACHIEVEMENT REPORT The Sharon Semor 4 H Club organized October Z 1948 with ZZ members The following officers were elected President Donald Elmore Vice President Garland Taylor Secretary Peggy Steele Song Leader Norma Lee Taylor Pianist Alma Young and Game Leader Marvin Rinner Donald Elmore was chosen to represent Woodward County in the boys health contest at Stillwater where he placed in the blue ribbon class which entitled him to enter the state contest at Oklahoma Cnty he placed third at Oklahoma City State Fair Donald Elmore was on the Woodward County judging team which went to Oklahoma City Goodwell Enid Angus Field Day Stillwater El Reno and Governor Turner s Ranch to do judging The group placed several firsts on these trips Janet Baker and Twyla Salisbury attended Oklahoma 4 H Club Roundup at Stillwater with their clothing demon stration and placed in the blue ribbon class Janet also entered the girls health contest Twyla Salisbury and Cecilia Loch placed 8th on a dairy foods demonstration from a group of 50 teams demonstration at the Enid Dairy Show Janet placed 8th on an mdividual dairy demonstration from a group of 40 Norma Lee Taylor Dor1ne McCracken Donald Elmore and Cec1l1a Loch won trips to Oklahoma City State Fair Donald placed first with his judglng team on livestock Cecilia placed first on nutrition judglng Dor1ne placed third in judging home improvements The girls home improvement and clothing articles chosen to go to the state fair were Cecilia Loch s dress Janet Baker s vanity set Twyla Salisbury s pajamas and Dor1ne McCracken s emergency meal Donald Elmore s white kafir placed first at the state fair The record books chosen to go to Stillwater were Donald Elmore s Janet Baker s Norma Lee Taylor s and Dor1ne McCracken s Those who were in the blue ribbon class at the county dress revue were Alma Young Norma Lee Taylor Dorme McCracken Twyla Salisbury Carol Thomas Peggy Steele and Cecilia Loch Janet Baker won reserve grand champion on her dress Winners from the rally on demonstration and timely topics were Janet Baker and Twyla Salisbury first on a team demonstration which won a trip to Stillwater Norma Lee Taylor placed second on an individual demonstration and second on a timely topic The total numbers of ribbons won by our club at the county fair were 30 firsts, 17 seconds, 7 thirds and several others on the different projects The ribbons won on the record books were Z firsts 3 seconds, 1 third and others We received a grade of 98 on the secretary s book and placed second on our booth The High School Club won S10 00 and the Grade Club won S7 50 Dor1ne McCracken entered the special bedroom project and won first at the fair Several of the girls assisted Miss Shierman and Mr Edmondson at the county fair The girls chosen as Junior leaders were Norma Lee Taylor Janet Baker Cecilia Loch Twyla Salisbury Dorme McCracken and Peggy Steele In our county 4 H Organization Donald Elmore was elected President and Norma Lee Taylor elected Vice President Our total income for the past year amounted to S729 95 S99 95 of this was won at the county and state fair S630 00 was taken in by the boys on their livestock The Sharon Semor Club met regular with most members present and carried a ful program throughout the year All boys and girls are enrolled in projects and doing splendid work this year For bemg the outstanding club in the county in 1948 49, and achieving the most, the Kiwanis favored us with a banquet and presented us with the Kiwanis 4 H Club Plaque We could not have achieved this splendid record without the help of our parents, our county agents, and our coach, Mrs. Doughty: and at this time, we want to say THANK YOU for your wonderful help. 36 . - . . . . . . . . .. . - D 1 ' I I l I.. ' n A -N535 b- 1...- 'OOM :rv 1 1 Q Mrs Roan Mrs Thomas LUNCH ROOM Ann1eBa1rd 4-'IE SHARON N vi-,,.., s '+- Mr, Constant Mr. Steele BUS DRIVERS Mr. Bradshaw Mr. Stinson 37 L D MEAD DRUG METHODIST CHURCH 'wal P' CONSTANT CAFE fv- '44 WILLIAMS AUTO CO BAPTIST CHURCH Ns ,., du V 0' NAZARENE CHURCH - TEACHERAGE ml SHARON HIGH MCCASLIN S STORE STEELE S LAUNDRY A BRIEF HISTORY OF SHARON OKLAHOMA In the year l91l a ra1lroad was be1ng bu11t through this part of the country whnch was known as the Wxchxta Falls and North Western It IS now known as the Katy Raxlroad On September 7 1911 Frank Kell purchased 68 acres of land from Alexander Sharon wh1ch thms town was named after He had th1s land plotted surveyed and subd1v1ded mto lots and blocks It was sold to prospectwe buyers who began to build homes and busmess houses Soon a post ofhce was granted and E P Wxllxams was our postmaster Later Mrs Carrxe Zahn took over and has smce been our postm1stress There were three general stores one owned by A L Garrett another one by George Chamberlam and F S Shryock, and another by Jay Thomas Two grocery stores owned by J M Straxn and by J' N Hallren A .T Neel owned a restaurant Dr A J Brace owned the drug store and Dr Leachman owned another drug store There were two lumberyards owned by C E Sharps and York Key York Key sold out and C E Sharp sold to I W Ball 1n 1931 There were three graxn elevators owned by L O Street, L E Bouquot and the Farmers Shlppmg Assoc1at1on Two of wh1ch are now owned by Mr Louzs Zahn A hardware and lmplement store was owned by Kznser and Son, a hardware store was owned by Samuel Halley and after operatmg It only a few months he d1ed The heirs then sold to I W Ball and he later added a stock of furniture and undertakmg Festos Ketchum owned a barber shop and John Trzplett owned a blacksmxth shop H E Drake owned the phone off1ce Alexander Sharon owned a feedyard Mr and Mrs John Krouth Sharon Then the Flrst Methodmst Church was estabhshed Then the F1rst Baptlst Church and then the Nazarene Church A lodge hall and a hotel buxldmg were owned by T C Roan and wzfe, both now deceased The buzldmg was then sold to the Masonic Lodge Then a two story brlck and t1le high school buzldmg was bu1lt The flrst supermtendent bemg Mr L D Chandler 192.3 bonds were voted and the present structure was bu1lt on the old bulldmg makmg xt all under one roof, also makmg mt one of the best school burldmgs mn the county A Ford Agency was then establlshed by Mr E P W1ll1ams and Mr H E Drake In later years Mr Wmlhams purchased the mterest of H E Drake Later Mr W1ll1ams sold the Ford Agency here and moved to Woodward where he bought the Chevrolet Agency G O Wzllzams, his son, bought the Chevrolet Agency here and now enjoys a fme busmess I about 1923 Sharon had a fire whlch destroyed about half a block of the busxness sectxon on the west s1de of mam street Many changes have taken place 1n Sharon s1nce the 1930 depression and World War II Smce then we have lost qulte a few bus1nesses but Sharon IS st1ll a good lxttle town and 15 enjoymg a very mce trade, and wzth the help and co operatxon of the farmers 1n this commumty, and with our good school and churches we will contmue to grow Byl w Ball Sharon, Oklahoma 9 1 0 , owned the Sharon State Bank.
