We, the class of 1959, wish to dedicate this annual to a teacher and a friend--Miss Rose Marie Kersey. She not only was a teacher during her 24 years of service to the community, but she was a friend and advisor to all those who needed help and advice. Miss Kersey has retired from teaching, but the memory of her and of her contribution to the field of education, and to her community will live within the walls of Shannon High School for years to come. 3 05544616 Thrs past year the people of Shannon lost a frrend Esp1e Colbert Everyone wrllremember Mr Colbert but especrally the chrldren He was conunually reparrmg roller skates zrppers and other small xtems for the chrldren These chrldren also remember the umes that they were allowed to rrng the school bell Many were the umes that the Jamtor s room was frlled wrth eager heads lrstenlng to stones durmg Lhelr lunch hour Few men form and shape the lrves of chrldren as much as Mr Colbert drd -l V rf, f 'W Q fn J 2 '1fff'f'f - ik, xfgfwrrgw fi ., W. All the boys became interested in this pretty, bright addition to their science classes, especially Joe, the leader of the gang, played by Larry Lindstrom. His friend and chief tormentor is Milt, who is Don Manning, a good-looking Wise- guy type. Other boys in the cast were: Johnny, an intellect, played by Larry DeWa1l, Willy, a small boy with a squeaky voice who was Don Christiansg and Stanley and Howie, who were the clowns of the group, played by Bob Gray and Ralph Bass. When the boys were suddenly so excited about Caroline, their former interests, the girls of the gang displayed their jealousy in various ways. Bunny, played by Lois Stone, was side-tracked from a diet, helped by Pat, an at- tractive, level-headed girl, portrayed by Darlene Mayer. Shirley, played by Verla Schultz was a pretty but head- strong type, who was apt to believe all things should go as she wanted them to go. l-ler friend, Jeanette, played by Gayle Nelson, displays an affected, bored manner with false sophistication. Beatrice Swalve played the part of Sally, a bustling enthusiastic type, who was more than interested in little Willy. To add to the teenage humor was Caroline's little sister, Susie, played by Marilyn Schmidecamp. With a power called blackmail, Susie put the play in a very comical light. Also in the cast were Carol Truckenmiller, who played the part of Ma Rand, the dry-witted owner of the drugstore where the entire play took placeg and Carol Cheeseman as Miss Jameson, the stern dignified science teacher who added humor in a brisk efficient manner. Their ideas and methods were for the good of the whole student body. Their greatest project of the year was their organization of the Teen Time Dance. It was held for teenagers arranging from 8th grade up, and usually helped the students occupy their time every other Saturday night. The Shannon Student Council was also represented at the Chicago Student Council convention. Later on in the year when the students became restless because of the nice spring weather, the Student Council purchased three movies to brighten the school days. The opportunit of serving the school was a rewarding one for ll ofthe members and it gave them a real appreciation of government and all of its problems. As the school year ap- proaches, their activities really increase. Last fall they marched at Lanark's Old Settler Days and at Forreston Sauerkraut Day and at the Freeport Centennial Cele- bration. They also played a concert at Savanna's 4-H Roundup during the late summer. Homecoming is usually a gala event and this year it was doubly exciting for the band as they played at the Northern Illinois University Homecoming at DeKalb and at our own Shannon Homecoming on Labor Day. After school began, the band played a concert at the PTA Halloween program and the dedication cere- monies of the new buildings. They also played a Christmas Concert and ended the year with their annual Spring Concert. At Galena, Illinois, in the District Contest, the band received a rating of excellent. The band was composed of approximately one- half grade and one-half high school students ranging from 6th grade through seniors. The band President was Carol Cheeseman: the Vice President was Joe Warner, the Librarian was Gayle Nelson and the Secretary was Ardath Flack. With the addition of our new instruments and the new band room, the band has achieved musically a far greater degree of advancement than ever before. We are looking forward to even greater accomplishments T . 2 ' i ,Q 3 in the future. 1 a ' v c -1 ' x Twenty-nine members of the mixed chorus, directed by Mr. McPherson, played an important part in the an- nual spring concert. Their numbers were No Man Is An lsland, This Is My Father's World, and Catch A Falling Starg they were accompanied on the piano by Beatrice Swalve. The chorus also sang at two other programs during the year, a Good Friday service and the Christmas pro- gram. Soloists were Janice Elseman and Gayle Nelson. On Tuesday and Thursday, during rehearsals, Mr. McPherson led the group in studies of intervals, scales, and sightsinging. Nearly all of the prepared numbers were sung in three-part harmonyg soprano, alto, and baritone. Sectional rehearsals sometimes comprised whole class periods, after which the sections were fitted together into harmony. The group enjoyed themselves very much and were a good example of the type of activity that improves the culture of our school. L' 1 The GAA officers for the school year of 1958-1959 were: President, Sharon Schoonhoveng Vice President, Verla Schultz, Secretary, Phyllis Moll, Treasurer, Valeria Schoonhoveg Point Recorder, Beatrice Swalveg Advisor, Mrs. Gauker. To begin the year the GAA played softball and went swimming with the Pearl City GAA every Monday night. Several girls learned how to swim while those who could swim practiced different skills. The instructor at the Y.M.C.A. showed the girls various water skills and helped them perfect them, if a girl proved she could do one of the skills she then received points for it. As the year rolled on bowling became popular. Shannon entered the state contest and topped several of the larger schools in the area. The last semester ended by playing several kinds of indoor sports in which toumaments were held. They also hiked approximately twenty miles throughout the year. To conclude the year, Shannon held a GAA Spring Play Day which took place on May 9, 1959. A total of 51 girls attended from Lanark, Thompson, Fulton, Mt. Carroll, and Shannon. The theme of the play day was Indians. Awards were given out to the best team of the day. Courtesy of Doris I.inker's KUT 8: KURL BEAUTY SHOP Shannon, Illinois U W 0 4 Y z4w,4 b Www f -. Sedan! Spanx! . . K It seems that the success of a Shannon High Basketball Team is regulated to the outcome of the annual F orreston battles. This year's team would have to be regarded as very successful since we were unable to beat Forreston in both games. We also were able to accomplish many other things while winning 22 and losing 8 games. We won the District Toumament, received the second place Carroll County Conference Trophy, and we placed third in the Mt. Carroll Holiday Toumament. Of the eight games we lost, five were by six or less points. Our Frosh-Soph team proved successful also in winning 18 and losing only 5. We were undefeated in the Carroll County Conference play. We lost to Lanark in the County Toumament finals by one point and had to be satisfied with the second place trophy. We also lost a 1 pointer to Pearl City. With the addition of our new gym it appears that basketball at Shannon High has taken an up swing. We can only hope that our teams continue to do as well as this year's team. This year's team can be characterized by the state- ment: They would never say die. lg. For many years, I have been associated with the game of basketball but this was a memorable one for me. By working closely with Coach Kuntzelman, I have added greatly to my knowledge of the game. I feel that the fine attitude of the boys and their outstanding perform ance is directly attributed to the fine contributions of Mr. Knutzelman. Our boys were not only as fine a team as the conference had to offer, but they conducted them- selves as gentlemen and sportsmen at all times and I am extremely proud of the fact that I was assoc- iated with these fine boys. Track is a sport which enables an athlete to show how well he can perform in relation to his competitors. Only those fellows who are extremely athletic conscious usually show up for this sport. Sometimes a fellow can try his very hardest to win throughout the season and still not capture a first place in an event, but despite his inability to win, he has accomplished other more important goals--that of having done his best and that of having competed. This year's track team was all underclasmen and did a very fine job. They finished second in the Stephenson County Meet, while Gary Schneider set two new me et records in the pole vault and high hurdles. The leading ribbon winners were Gary Schneider, Arnie Ciedd, and Dan Hartman. We shall expect an even finer job from the same group of fine athletes next year. W gli., N h S' is ' v e . f if at .
