Alumni of Sacred Heart-Shan- ley High school were drawn to the magnetism of Homecoming once again this year on Clct 13. As in the past, the alumni were ref freshment hosts at the dance in the Knights of Columbus hall. Among the many other activities that attracted them, the grads took active part in the pep rally and turned out in full force for the game at Barnett field to see the Deacons wallop the Wahpeton Vsfops 26'6. Homecoming was highlighted by the coronation of Queen Patricia Rush by Eu' gene Sweeney, president of the Shanley High Athletic association. Mr. Sweeney presented corsages of red and white care nations to attendants Joanne Marquart, Bernadine Erickson, Maxine Brunelle and Marilyn Yunker. This year the roronation ceremony took place between the halves of the football game. Students and alumni opened Home' coming day with mass in St. Mary's catlief dral celebrated by Rev. Wm. Durkin KSHA '40J. Sister M. Borgia directed the school choir. Following mass a series of breakfasts were held by the various groups of students and alums. The queen and attendants were hone ored by the senior girls at a breakfast in the Gardner hotel. A parade, complete with police escort, honoring the queen's court preceded the game. Floats giving visions of the beating ahead for Wahpeton swung down Broad' way with crepe paper fairly flying. Conf vertibles lined with the queen, attendants and cheerleaders as well as cars carrying class officers were features of the parade, The Deacons rolled up a definite swf of 26f6 against YVahpeton under tne lights of Barnett field. And to put the final touch on the L'Friday the l3th activities, a big dance for students and alumni was held in the Knights of Columbus hall. Father Frank Nestor, Archbishop A. J. Muench, Pope Pius Xll and Msgr. Ar' rel take time out to pose for a picture during a Papal Audience in Castel Conf dolfa, ltaly. Rev. Mother M,. Joseph of St. Johns orphanage, formerly of Sacred Heart Acad' emy, and Sister M. Alphonsus of Sacred Heart celebrated their golden jubilee on July 2. They shared jubilee honors with the late Sister M. Bernard of St. John's or' phanage who celebrated her golden anni- versary three years previously. Sister M. Bernard fMary Mooney of St. Joseph, Mo.j entered the novitiate of the Presentaf tion Sisters at Fargo in 1894. She served for a number of years as a teacher at the academy and various other schools in the diocese. Rev. Mother M. Joseph fMary Crea' ganj and Sister M. Alphonsus fCatherine Clarkj came from Limerick, lreland, and entered the novitiate of the Presentation Sisters in Fargo on July 2, 1897. They entered what was then known as St. Josephs convent, now St. John's orphan' age. Both have served for many years as teachers in the academy. The school at New Rockford was organized under the supervision of Rev. Mother M. Joseph. She also served as Reverend Mother duff ing her years as instructor in the acadf emy. The Sacred Heart academyfShanley High Alumni association sent a letter to all alumni in regard to the golden jubilee observance. A purse of S5243 was collected for the jubilarians. This along with a spirit' ual bouquet was presented to them on behalf of the Alumni organization. Rev. Father Paul of the Passionist Fathf ers of Chicago, celebrated the Mass for the Jubilarians on July Z. Father Paul fFrank Placekj was reared by the Sisters in St. John's orphanage. To the present time there have been five Sisters in the Presentation order who have had golden jubilees. They are Moth' er M. Paul fdeceasedj, Sister M. Cecelia fdeceasedj, Sister M. Bernard fdeceasedj, Rev. Mother M. Joseph and Sister M. Alphonsus. Those who were fortunate enough to have had these Sisters as teachers revere their memories as such and we know every alum reading this article will join us again in wishing them God's richest blessings on their remaining years. Rev. Arth, superintendent of Shanley High school, sent the following message to the Alumni organization cancernlng the Fall Festival. Father Arch said On November 16 many of us will be celebrating. We will be enjoying ourselves at the annual Fall Festival sponsored by the Alumni associaf tion. Without a lot of courage and will' ingness to work on the part of the sponf sors, such a large undertaking would be doomed to failure. To spell complete sucf cess, we need, besides the good will of the people in general, a veritable host of will' ing, cooperative workers. We have all of these! A slight change has been injected into this year's overall plans. We will find the members of Shanley High Parent council taking care of all lunches. This relieves the members of the Alumni association of the added burden of worrying about food supplies in addition to their many cares about confectioneries, etc. lt is truly inspiring to see the members of both organizations working so harmon' iously together for the common goal . . . giving a helping hand to Catholic educaf tion, No one is seeking a personal reward or public acclaim. Each member is showf ing in a concrete way that he can surf mount personal ideosyncracies in order that true charity may grow and increase.
