Football Coach Sid Cichy called the initial practice August 25 with 11 lettermen out of 26 candidates turning out. Bef cause of an apparent shortage of man power, Coach Cichy stressed peak physical condition for every participant as the only way the Deacons could be assured of a sucessful season. The Shanley gridders started fast whipping Moor' head and Fargo in their first two contests which assured them of the Intra'City title. The victory over Fargo High was the fifth straight in as many years. A rough, deter' mined St. james eleven fought for the Knute Rockne Trophy. It was a battle of David and Goliath when the Deacons tangled with the Devils Lake Satans, the smaller Deacons ran wild as they crushed their larger opponents. Shanley's advance to football glory was temporarily halted by the heads up Jamestown squad who cashed in on their breaks for a one point victory. Next on the schedule were the prefseason favorites, Wzilipetmnn Wraps. But the lrishmen played as if they didn't read the papers and upset the highly touted Wops in a great display of run' ning and passing. The Shanleyites then took their aerial circus to Park River, but it was temporarily grounded due to high winds thus forcing the Deacons to show their vaunted ground attack. The last obstacle in the path of the Deacons hopes for an Eastern Divisional Title was Valley City who had upset the favored Deacons the two previous seasons. But this time the Deacons came through with a smashing victory and the right to play in the State Championship play-off. Due to inclement weather the title game was cancelled. Shanley and Minot were named cofchampions of North Dakota Class A football. The Deacons received additional honors by being named the top high school team in the state in a press poll of the coaches.
