We have sincerely tried to put together the many events that occurred this year. Lack of time and finances curtailed many features which we would like to have expanded. As our theme we have chosen Unity, the crying need in a world lacking peace We have used the Encyclical on Christian Education of Youth by Pope Pius XI to tie together the various sections of the book as teachers, students, and all the organizations connected with the school have only one and the same aim-that of the Christian Philosophy of Education, and are all in their different fields working towards this end. CofEditors Diane Breyer and Beverly Stegge 'llt is therefore as important to make no mistake in education, as it is to make no mistake in the pursuit of the last end, with which the whole work of education is intimately and necessarily connect' ed,ithere can be no ideally perfect education which is not Christian educationf, -Pope Pius XI, Encyclical on Christian Education Denise Denig Diane Breyer Beverly Stegge Aurelie Stricherz CofBusiness Manager CofEditors CO'BuSif16SS Manager ill ff , I ,, Dedication 1 l i l We are very happy that the change in the name of the school does not change our patron, the Sacred Heart of jesus, to Whom this year as always we lovingly and gratefully dedicate Reminiscor. Because this is a year of momentuous happenings we remember with loving ap- preciation and justifiable pride: our beloved Archbishop Aloysius J, Muench now Apostolic delef gate to Bonn, Germany, our revered Auxiliary, Most Rev. Leo Dworschak, who will celebrate his Silver jubilee next June, and our two pioneer Sisters, who for many years taught at SHA, Mother M, Joseph and Sister M. Alphonsus, who celebrated their Golden Jubilee some months ago. We ask the Sacred Heart to bless them and all their works. Affectionate congratulations and a hearty Ad Multos Annos to all. H Pope Pius XI, Encyclical on Christian Education U11 Seniors l Z l 1 President Patrick Colliton VicefPresident Patrick Conmy Secretaryffreasurer Joanne Marquart Senior Class History Bewildered, green, or just plain scared, any word may describe our condition when we entered S. H. A. as freshmen. Neil Diebert, Patrick Conmy, and Maxine Brunelle were elected president, vicefpresident and secretaryftreasurer respectively. By means of a Booster Club under Sister ,lane Michael's tutorship, we instituted our first class fund. Upon returning as sophomores, a feeling of security and an expression of dignity were prevalent among us. Class elects were: President, Kathie Barnickg vice president, Bill Seeba: and secretary treasurer, George Kelly. With the thought of the JuniorfSenior prom in the notftoofdistant future, we sold Christmas cards and miniature footballs as a means of inf come. Up another step and we were juniors. With two years of experience and gaiety behind us, we were more determined than ever. Class officers to lead us this year were: Pat Col- liton, president, Kathie Barnick, vicefpresident, and Pat Cone my, secretaryftreasurer. A junior class play, Bolts and Nuts was sponsored under Father Hovda's able guidance. Two magazine subscription selling drives, plus the class play, boost- ed our prom quota to the desired height. The Nloorhead country club was the scene of the prom. which proved to be a big success. With hopes of entering the much talked about Shanley High School, we looked forward to our final year. Here we are seniors! It seems only yesterday when we entered the halls of old S. H. A. Pat Colliton was again elect' ed president, with the help of Pat Conmy, vicefpresidentg and loanne Marquart, secretaryftreasurer. This adventurous year marked the beginning of Shanley High School. Although a beautiful new school and spacious gymnasium were graciously accepted by all, the wonderful traditions of S. H. A. were still observed. With Fathers Durkin and Walsh at the helm, we presented our Senior Class Play Murder in a Nunneryf' Soon we shall graduate. Along with graduation will come many a sad heart. Not sad because of graduation, but be' cause all the wonderful memories of S. H. A. and Shanley must be left behind. Yes, now we must go out into the world and cope with anything that might prevail. But we of Shanley High School feel as well equipped as any graduate, for through S. H. A, and Shanley's portals, we have attained an education which not only insures our temporal welfare, but also our spiritual. l12l New members of The Alpha Chapter of the National Honor Society of Shanley High School Therese Foy Connie Hogan Ieraldine Burgess Selections For Honor Society Based On Character, Leadership, Service An A average and a high rating in character, leadership, and service have earned a place for six seniors in Shanley's Alpha chapter of the National Honor Society. The officers chosen for that year were Bill Chisholm, pref siclent: Gene johnson, vicefpresidentg and Mary Helen Peter' son, secretaryftreasurer. Several projects such as candy sales and pay assemblies helped furnish us with class funds. This year, the dignified juniors retained Betty Fortney l20fl as president. She was assisted by Fern Cossette as vicefpresif dent: and Bill Chisholm as secretaryftreasurer. A vocation panel discussion and exhibit of material on religious orders of women was an interesting project this year. We sold Christmas cards and sponsored pay assemblies along with other projects to raise money for the annual junior senior prom. We also staged a threefact play, Tiger House, which was directed by Sister M. Thomas. Proud to be the juniors of Shanley High, we are anxiously awaiting our senior year. 2 ,N r xx X X gm XX ir X Q X K S X X K 2. -is X -. egge QFQSS Qi?': , Q r S M if , x x Eleanor Campagna Brown Nlary Conway Connolly Comeau Marlerie Grenier Philip Gapp Garvey , A A , fog, NW Phyllis Erickson Margaret Ann 1 Dullea Duginski fiyixyzizzi Q, W ,,.' 5 7 Eugene Patrick Jerome Johnson Henry i Patricia , A Livingston McClerc Leichlelter Larry Patricia 9 fffyxv eff YS' mf- gf , iifaiffggg e mae. , , , f 'f fy f sa: ff i iw' f Q Q 6? Classroom activities in the new school are very fascinating. We look forward to future years to be spent in the new building. At the beginning of the year we choose Mary lean Sinner, president: Roberta Peterson, vicefpresidentg and Bill Thompson, secretaryftreasurer. October meetings were concentrated on Father Wanzek's instructional talks. In November we had our first big social function, the Sadie Hawkins dance. From the returns of this dance we planned our reception which took place on Dec. 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. In the morning of this day the sodality attended Mass in a body and in the afternoon the candidates were ref ceived formally into the sodality. Cpen house was held in St. Anthony's Gym. Qur Lenten project was prayers for the Conversion of Russia. The Masses with which the Lenten season opened and closed were also for that intention and were celebrated by our director, Father Wanzek. We offered our sacrifices throughout Lent in a Spiritual Bouquet for that intention also. The Holy Week projects consisted mainly in vigils before the Blessed Sacrament on Holy Thurs' day and Good Friday. A group rosary was also said on Good Friday immedif ately following three hours devotion, for our Lenten intention. After our Lenten projects, we began concentrating on a full May schedule. The sodality helped purchase the flowers for the May altars and helped in constructing the special May Altar. Arrangements were made for the sodality to sing at the May devotions once a week. With pep talks to our newly elected officers, who are, Prefect, Darlene Trot' tier: Vicefprefect, joan Kodelkag Treasurer, Mary Kay Savageaug and Secretary, Catherine Miller, we closed our books on another sodality year. Agood deed done at the proper time, was at Christmas when each Sodalist bought a gift and packed them alto' gether in a packing box which was sent to an orphange in Europe. A good deed never goes unrewarded as the So' dality received a thank you letter from the sister, warming the hearts of all. Another good deed was performed by the Sodalists on Christmas for they cheered the hearts of those who needed it by Christmas caroling at the old folks home, orphanage, hospitals, and several other homes. They then exchanged gifts among themselves at a party given after' wards. Reception of the new Sodalists was held on February 11, 1951, in a beautiful ceremony at St. Mary's Cathef dral in the afternoon. A tea was served after the services with the officers pouring for the guests who were the parents of the new sodalists and a few priests. Up to date the annual dinner dance was the last prof ject of the Sodality. This event was a gala one for all conf cern-ed. It was held at the Frederick Martin Hotel, and was graciously served by their staff. Delores Ukestad, as president has very capably done her job with her utmost sincerity and ability. E531 M fi Football Coach Sid Cichy called the initial practice August 25 with 11 lettermen out of 26 candidates turning out. Bef cause of an apparent shortage of man power, Coach Cichy stressed peak physical condition for every participant as the only way the Deacons could be assured of a sucessful season. The Shanley gridders started fast whipping Moor' head and Fargo in their first two contests which assured them of the Intra'City title. The victory over Fargo High was the fifth straight in as many years. A rough, deter' mined St. james eleven fought for the Knute Rockne Trophy. It was a battle of David and Goliath when the Deacons tangled with the Devils Lake Satans, the smaller Deacons ran wild as they crushed their larger opponents. Shanley's advance to football glory was temporarily halted by the heads up Jamestown squad who cashed in on their breaks for a one point victory. Next on the schedule were the prefseason favorites, Wzilipetmnn Wraps. But the lrishmen played as if they didn't read the papers and upset the highly touted Wops in a great display of run' ning and passing. The Shanleyites then took their aerial circus to Park River, but it was temporarily grounded due to high winds thus forcing the Deacons to show their vaunted ground attack. The last obstacle in the path of the Deacons hopes for an Eastern Divisional Title was Valley City who had upset the favored Deacons the two previous seasons. But this time the Deacons came through with a smashing victory and the right to play in the State Championship play-off. Due to inclement weather the title game was cancelled. Shanley and Minot were named cofchampions of North Dakota Class A football. The Deacons received additional honors by being named the top high school team in the state in a press poll of the coaches. Trimming Fargo High in both meetings of the two clubs, and victories over Wahpeton, Minot, and Valley City the Shanley team provided plenty of excitement for its root' ers. At one time during the season the Deacons boasted seven straight wins. Poor shooting cost the Deacons a berth in the State U91 Tournament when they dropped two out of three in the Eastern Divisional tourney. After beating the Grafton Spoilers in the opener 4341, Shanley suffered successive losses to Grand Forks 5646 and Devils Lake 62f46. Mrs. Joseph Orchard, Executive Sccrctiry E651 Alumni of Sacred Heart-Shan- ley High school were drawn to the magnetism of Homecoming once again this year on Clct 13. As in the past, the alumni were ref freshment hosts at the dance in the Knights of Columbus hall. Among the many other activities that attracted them, the grads took active part in the pep rally and turned out in full force for the game at Barnett field to see the Deacons wallop the Wahpeton Vsfops 26'6. Homecoming was highlighted by the coronation of Queen Patricia Rush by Eu' gene Sweeney, president of the Shanley High Athletic association. Mr. Sweeney presented corsages of red and white care nations to attendants Joanne Marquart, Bernadine Erickson, Maxine Brunelle and Marilyn Yunker. This year the roronation ceremony took place between the halves of the football game. Students and alumni opened Home' coming day with mass in St. Mary's catlief dral celebrated by Rev. Wm. Durkin KSHA '40J. Sister M. Borgia directed the school choir. Following mass a series of breakfasts were held by the various groups of students and alums. The queen and attendants were hone ored by the senior girls at a breakfast in the Gardner hotel. A parade, complete with police escort, honoring the queen's court preceded the game. Floats giving visions of the beating ahead for Wahpeton swung down Broad' way with crepe paper fairly flying. Conf vertibles lined with the queen, attendants and cheerleaders as well as cars carrying class officers were features of the parade, The Deacons rolled up a definite swf of 26f6 against YVahpeton under tne lights of Barnett field. And to put the final touch on the L'Friday the l3th activities, a big dance for students and alumni was held in the Knights of Columbus hall. Father Frank Nestor, Archbishop A. J. Muench, Pope Pius Xll and Msgr. Ar' rel take time out to pose for a picture during a Papal Audience in Castel Conf dolfa, ltaly. Rev. Mother M,. Joseph of St. Johns orphanage, formerly of Sacred Heart Acad' emy, and Sister M. Alphonsus of Sacred Heart celebrated their golden jubilee on July 2. They shared jubilee honors with the late Sister M. Bernard of St. John's or' phanage who celebrated her golden anni- versary three years previously. Sister M. Bernard fMary Mooney of St. Joseph, Mo.j entered the novitiate of the Presentaf tion Sisters at Fargo in 1894. She served for a number of years as a teacher at the academy and various other schools in the diocese. Rev. Mother M. Joseph fMary Crea' ganj and Sister M. Alphonsus fCatherine Clarkj came from Limerick, lreland, and entered the novitiate of the Presentation Sisters in Fargo on July 2, 1897. They entered what was then known as St. Josephs convent, now St. John's orphan' age. Both have served for many years as teachers in the academy. The school at New Rockford was organized under the supervision of Rev. Mother M. Joseph. She also served as Reverend Mother duff ing her years as instructor in the acadf emy. The Sacred Heart academyfShanley High Alumni association sent a letter to all alumni in regard to the golden jubilee observance. A purse of S5243 was collected for the jubilarians. This along with a spirit' ual bouquet was presented to them on behalf of the Alumni organization. Rev. Father Paul of the Passionist Fathf ers of Chicago, celebrated the Mass for the Jubilarians on July Z. Father Paul fFrank Placekj was reared by the Sisters in St. John's orphanage. To the present time there have been five Sisters in the Presentation order who have had golden jubilees. They are Moth' er M. Paul fdeceasedj, Sister M. Cecelia fdeceasedj, Sister M. Bernard fdeceasedj, Rev. Mother M. Joseph and Sister M. Alphonsus. Those who were fortunate enough to have had these Sisters as teachers revere their memories as such and we know every alum reading this article will join us again in wishing them God's richest blessings on their remaining years. Rev. Arth, superintendent of Shanley High school, sent the following message to the Alumni organization cancernlng the Fall Festival. Father Arch said On November 16 many of us will be celebrating. We will be enjoying ourselves at the annual Fall Festival sponsored by the Alumni associaf tion. Without a lot of courage and will' ingness to work on the part of the sponf sors, such a large undertaking would be doomed to failure. To spell complete sucf cess, we need, besides the good will of the people in general, a veritable host of will' ing, cooperative workers. We have all of these! A slight change has been injected into this year's overall plans. We will find the members of Shanley High Parent council taking care of all lunches. This relieves the members of the Alumni association of the added burden of worrying about food supplies in addition to their many cares about confectioneries, etc. lt is truly inspiring to see the members of both organizations working so harmon' iously together for the common goal . . . giving a helping hand to Catholic educaf tion, No one is seeking a personal reward or public acclaim. Each member is showf ing in a concrete way that he can surf mount personal ideosyncracies in order that true charity may grow and increase. May God look down on their common enterprise and bless their lives and familf ies with all things profitable unto salvaf tion, concluded Father Arth. i661 I AM THE LADY OF THE ROS' ARY and I have come to warn the faith- ful to amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins. They must not continue to offend Our Lord, already so deeply off fended. THEY MUST SAY the ROS' ARY. Words of Our Lady of Fatima, 1917 Alumni Trustees George Noonan and Mrs. T. E. Stoa, both of Fargo, have been elected to the board of trustees. They will fill vacancies left by the death of Dr. George M. Denis and the inability of Mrs. Tintes to hold both the office of treasurer and trustee for the organization. Holdover trustees are: Mmes. E. G. Hughes, Lou Misclne, Ray Chisholm, Pargog Albert Sinner, Cas- selton. More than anything else, the Alumni are proud of the expansion of their pro- gram to include a retreat for the members Sunday, January 28 and a lecture on the Apparation of Gur Lady as related to world peace by Mr. Breen of the Scapular Magazine, Tuesday, March 13. Both events were well attended and a very great success. The Alumni feel that this brings them closer to the objectives they had in mind when organizing the Alumni Association. Alumni were hosts to the last senior class of Sacred Heart academy at its annual communion breakfast for graduates and annual meeting of the Alumni association on May 28. Breakfast was served in the town Hall of the Gardner hotel following mass and communion in St. Mary's cathedral. The annual meeting of the alumni association and election of officers followed. Monsignor Arrell and Father Arth were guest speakers at the affair honor' ing the graduating alums. Monsignor Arrell urged all graduates to join actively in the alumnae. He also spoke of the possible necessity of changing the name of the alumni association because of the opening of the new Shanley High school. Father Arth spoke to the students about the big part their Catholic educaf tion will play in their future plans. A Mrs. Grchard, executive secretary, welcomed the graduating seniors and outlined the activities of the Alumni organization during the past.
