At last the long-awaited year has arrived. Since we entered high school four years ago, we felt that there could be no greater honor than to be the leaders of the school and to be the chief participants in the many activities offered to us. Our first cardinal step was to elect Ruth Landis president, Grant Walker, vice- president, Elizabeth Hickey, secretary, and Kathleen Daugherty, treasurer. The officers have had an important part in guiding the destinies of the class, they have performed this task faithfully. Genevieve Bauermaster has acted as class advisor in helping these officers carry on their respective duties. Miss Bauermaster has efficiently led our class during the four years we have been in high school-directing our class plays and super- vising our activities. At the beginning of the term we started to sell ice cream and candy as one of the means of financing our Senior trip, and continued this project throughout the entire term. In addition to selling these refreshments at noon, extra profit was derived from their sale during basketball games and evening community activities in the school. Our next problem was choosing a competent staff to publish the 1940 Chicahonian. A faculty committee chose the staff members who were later approved by the entire class. With the coming of October busy days began for the yearbook staff-group and individual photographs were taken, trips were made into surrounding towns to solicit advertising, and write-ups and copy material were assembled. We did not neglect our social activities, for we sponsored the annual Halloween Party. This social function marked a milestone in the history of Stonycreek in that the first school dance was held. In November we presented our class play, A Crazy Mix- Upj' a riotous farce which entertained both young and old. The following comprised the cast: Ruth Landis, Carolyn Glessner, Phyllis Baldwin, William Glessner, Grant Walker, Elwood Yoder, Robert Barkman, Grace Stutzman, Pauline Schrock, and Shirley Ross. During February the Seniors became magazine salesmen-with one easy lesson from a Curtis magazine representative-a selling project. Our Senior diary next reveals our gala operetta, The Sunbonnet Girl. The Senior Class furnished most of the leads, we are proud to say. The catering and ticket-selling for the annual basketball banquet in April was another responsibility of the Seniors. ' We are now looking forward with avid hearts to the annual junior-Senior Banquet, our Baccalaureate service, Class Night, and Commencement. The trip to Washington, D. C., which will follow the Commencement exercises, will be a fitting conclusion to four happy, busy, and worthwhile years. lO , .fri -Wg, gp D Nf!'ylW y1f'7r,0'xl'l'n0l' ,7,AuJ,Jl,ZJf '7:d'I7 , 'Aoi W7wQ.,. Row Shipivey, Row William Row union Cllaaa One more step and we will be seniors! It is time we are preparing to equal the preceding senior classes in representing our school. Our class was organized at the beginning of the school term, and from this class of forty-eight were chosen the following officers: james Heinemeyer, president, Erma Dupp- stadt, vice presidentg Delbert Kimmel, secretary, and Evelyn Miller, treasurer. What would the varsity basketball team have done without the juniors? We were the very backbone of our school' team-Donald Landis serving as captain. We have designed our own ring and made it a standard for the first time in the his- tory of the school. The seal, which is of the main entrance, is surrounded by the emblem of the keystone on the crest. Probably our greatest enterprise this year is our class play. We have chosen a three- act comedy- Aunt Tillie Goes to Townf, And now the class of nineteen hundred forty-one looks forward eagerly with great hopes for future enterprises.- ....15.... f.,5,,.. M22 'T 2 if 4 J i - i C-fha Chlcahonictn .Stott The building of a High School Annual is much like the building of a house. Plan- ning comes first. The Faculty of Stonycreek laid the initial plans by selecting the staff to edit the 1940 Chicahonian. Because of his experience gained last year, Harry M. Emerick was again selected to be the advisor for the Annual. Then came more detailed plans. The staff solicited subscriptions and advertising to see if it would be financially possible to continue further, because a publication of this magnitude must be self supporting. After an estimate of future receipts was made, it was necessary to decide upon a bud- get to keep within the expected revenues. Then details, like brick upon brick, had to be carried out. Photographs, proofs, dummy layouts, writeups, identification of groups, end- less revision and changes in plans, collections, typing, and a thousand and one other items had to be carried out with infinite care and exactness. Then after designing and selecting a cover, just as a house must be roofed, the annual is ready to go to pressg and we must await the verdict of our patrons, as to whether our efforts are to be a success or a failure. But our reward will be sure if we can say, when our task is completed, that we have done our best. It would be unfair, in closing, if we neglected to give due recognition to our capable Editor and Literary Editor, Carolyn Glessner and Ruth Landisg our efficient Business Manager, William Glessnerg and to the executive ability of Kathleen Daugherty, our Ad- vertising Manager. Their eiorts and time were unstinted in their desire for a worthy Chicahonian. THE STAFF Editor ..., ,..,..,..,., ..... .,..,.... We are indeed indebted to Miss Hess and Miss Phenicie for their efforts which are directly responsible for the improvement of the school paper this year. The staff itself changed membership several times during the year due to members moving away or lack of interest on the part of some of the students in our work. How- ever, we still were able to publish a good paper. The Chesire Cat, the Inquiring Reporter, and the Viking Reporter, and items of gen- eral news interest led our student body to clamor for the Hi-Lites on the day it left the inky rolls of the Mimeograph. We were able to plan attractive ads for our advertising patrons through the efforts of our artists. Our exchange list grew to include twenty schools. Our reporters and feature writers improved their style of writing through the study of school journalism. Our aims and plans for the coming year are even greater-we want a bigger and better Hi-Lites. ....26.... x 'Futuna qanmona ot Clmanlca The Stonycreek Valley Chapter of Future Farmers of America is part of a national organization of farm boys studying vocational agriculture in 46 states. Among these activities were the handicraft clubs-an entirely new adventure in the use of our leisure time. These clubs offered many new opportunities to the students who liked to do creative work. Students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades were members of the Senior Handi- craft Club, the lower three grades made up the personnel of the junior Girls' and Boys' Handicraft Clubs. The girls have done a considerable amount of work in the making of jewelry from metals and plastics, and even participated in the art of making model airplanes. The boys started with the construction of model airplanes and had a very interesting exhibit at the school fair. Model racers also proved to be of much interest and value to the boys. When the jig saw was introduced to the club, many new articles of wood and plastics were originated. These, with their beautifully polished and painted surfaces, met with the approval of all. It is assured that the new clubs have given much pleasure to the students, and new and better opportunities will be offered to them next year. The StaE consists of twenty-five librarians, and two people are appointed to take care of the library each period and keep it in an orderly way. The aim is to help the students become better acquainted with the Library. With the co-operation of the entire staff, and our advisor, Miss Bauermaster, we have taken a book inventory and arranged the books in the proper manner. Miss Niessner ably directed the Mixed Chorus as it presented a two- act operetta, The Sunbonnet Girl. Susan Clifton, an orphaned child, has been left in charge of Mr. and Mrs. Abijah Scroggs, a skinflint couple. As the play opens, Mrs. Coleman arrives in the village to conduct a contest for cer- tain scholarships in music. Sue, on learning of the contest, asks timidly if she might not enter as one of the contestants, but the Scroggs insists that she is needed for the endless dish-washing of the Scroggs household. The opening of the second HCI discloses all the young people of the village, gathered for the contest. A number of the contestants are represented, but the winner, much to the surprise of all, is Susan Clifton. She has been completely outfitted-in secret-by the sympathetic Barbara. Bob Coleman, carried away by her beauty and charm, immediately offers his heart and hand. Then on December 1 Coach Axtell and his boys made a long trip to Martinsburg, in Blair County, to return a game played here last year. They lost this en- counter by a 21-15 score. The following day the team continued on to State College to attend the annual basketball clinic and the Penn State-Washington and jefferson game. The next home encounter pitted the varsity against the alumni. This game was won 47-28. A strong and veteran Everett squad furnished the next opposition at Everett and our boys lost by a 36-22 score. Then in another afternoon game the Vikings poured it oni' to defeat Cambria-Rowe Business College by a 57-23 count. In a return game with Everett on the home floor, we again suffered a set-back by the score of 37-23. Everett later went on to become the Champion of the Tussey Mountain League of District 6. Our Class B League season began on December 19 when Garrett visited Shanksville. After the smoke of battle had cleared, the Vikings were ahead by the one-sided score of 54-21. Our next encounter was with Shade Township, our Class A neighbor to the north. In a thrilling duel which saw the lead change frequently, the Vikings again emerged on top. Another Class A entry furnished our next opposition when the Vik- ings dropped a 34-23 decision to Meyersdale at Shanksville. Three victories followed, two of them being especially gratifying. The first was over Stoystown on January 12. We then travelled to Rockwood and for the first time in the history of basketball at Stonycreek, our team defeated Coach Putman's boys on the Rock- wood floor. The final score was 23-18. Three days later one of our former coaches, Garner Pritz, led his Berlin-Brothersvalley cagers to Shanksville. In a nip and tuck battle A .... 38... before a large crowd, the Vikings finally won 21-17. Later in the season our Berlin neighbors turned the tables on their home floor by a 41-28 count. Our remaining victories included wins over Garrett, Rockwood and Stoystown. The second win over Rockwood again constituted a record, since this was the first time Stony- creek ever defeated Rockwood twice in a single season. Undoubtedly our finest game of the season took place when the Vikings invaded Cairnbrook to return the game with Shade Township. After an early lead had been taken by the Vikings, Shade forged ahead and remained there for most of the game. With four minutes of play left, the Stonycreek boys were seven points behind. Then suddenly things began to happen. Led by Don Landis and Rayman four field goals and a foul were scored in quick succession. The defense was equally alert, Shade was held score- less, and the Vikings won 36-34. The most bitter series of the season were the games with Friedens and Hooversville. The Vikings, while never for a minute giving up, lost all four games. The winning margin of play averaged slightly more than seven points per game. These two teams finished in first and second place in the Class BH League, while Stonycreek had to be content with third place. Our hats are off to two fine and courageous conquerors. The climax of the season came on April 3 when our annual basketball banquet was held. Last year's banquet was so successful that we decided to make it an annual affair. A fine program was arranged by Coach Axtell and Faculty Manager Emerick. Varsity awards were presented at the banquet to Don Landis, Bob Dively, Earl Rayman, Ed Meyers, Tom Brant, and Don Spangler. This account would not be complete without special mention of our starting six. Captain Don Landis can certainly be called the spark plug of the Vikings, and he en- tirely justified the faith of his teammates when he was chosen by them to be their floor leader. His never-say-die spirit was an important factor in the team's playing. In spite of the fact that he played a guard position he was a leading scorer for the year. Center Bob Dively proved to be one of the cleverest players ever developed at Stony- creek. If he continues his good work and adds a bit more weight, he may become the best center in the county next year. In spirit, aggressiveness, and general all around ability, Bob ranks second to none on the team. The other veteran on the team, Guard Eddie Meyers, Very capably held down his side of the floor. In fact, with his weight, Fat could hardly do otherwise. Many an opposing forward can testify to Eddie's defensive ability. While Eddie was seldom in the scoring columns, every now and then one of his long mid-floor shots would ring true. When this happened he was sure to bring the house down. u The other three regulars this year, while not having the experience of their team- mates, played very creditable ball. Forwards Earl Rayman and tiny Tony Brant were the offensive leaders. When Rayman was clicking, the team won. Don Spangler, sopho- more substitute guard, did an excellent bit of defensive work. He will be heard from more in the future. With a fine group of young players on the junior Varsity team, the future success of basketball at Stonycreek seems assured. BERLIN DOWNED BY STUNYCREEK Shanksville, Jan. 19-Stonycreek Township and Berlin, two of Somerset County's most natural rivals, locked horns here tonight with the Class B Townshippers carting off a 21-17 tri- umph with a hard-fought battle. Bobby Dively, who got out of a sick- bed to aid the Vikings' cause, played his natural bang-up game at center and was the steadying influence as his mates h.ld on to a slim lead once mov- ing to the front halfway through the second heat. Bitter defensive play marked the initial stanza, during which only one point was scored and that by Berlin. The Vikings then raced out in front, 6-5, and retained the one-point advant- age at 11-10 going into the final chapter. The victory was doubly sweet for the Vikings, who compete in the county's Class B league while Berlin is a Class A quintet. Berlin copped tonight's junior varsity preliminary by 26-24. SHANKSVILLE LOSES TO BERLIN QUINTET Berlin, Feb. 9-Spurting in the sec- ond period to take a 19-14 lead after the first frame found the foes dead- locked at 8-8, Berlin-Brothersvalley High tabbed Stonycreek Township High of Shanksville with a 41-28 de- feat here last evening. Rockwood Five Losew Vikings Rockwood, Jan. 16-For the first time in the history of basketball in the school, Stonycreek Township traveled to Rockwood Monday night and emerged victorious over the Rockwood quintet, 23-18. Young Bob Dively, one of the coun- ty's outstanding stars, accounted for 16 Shanksville points on eight field goals. Cook and Hay were Rockwood's high scorers, each with five points. Stonycreek held the margin from the they had a 4-1 early moments, when lead at the end of the first quarter and although Rockwood ploughed up in front, the visitors put up a good fight and emerged victorious. STONYCREEK SPORTS OLIPPINGS Ston creek Ten Wins First Count Softball Crown: Whips Berlin Wins First Game By 5 to 3 ii Softball Ten Saws Up and Second by, 4 to 1 Count Stonycreek Townships hard-hitting ten won the crown for the 1959 Som- erset County Softball League last night by handing the Berlin-Brothersvalley outfit a 4-1 drubbing on a sloppy Ber- lin athletic field for their second con. secutive playoff victory. It was pretty much the same pic- ture that presented itself during the second half when the Shanksville boys led by Pitcher Frye, put all their hits to the best advantage to clinch the title for the half and put in their bids to meet the Berlin-Brothersvalley ten, the victor during the first half of the season. There was not much excitement for the scattered crowd of fans, huddled up in their topcoats until the end of the sixth inning when Irving Engleka was called out at home plate, at which time the Berlin and Shanksville players went into a heated argument. But things went on just as well from that time. Berlin, who won the distinction of the uhitless wonders during the first half of the season kept their word last night, although in a different sense. Frye used his best throwing ability to limit the Berlinners to five hits, while his own comrades accounted for nine safeties. Shanksville presented Berlin with three scoring chances on errors, while Berlin had but one misplay marked up against them. Before noon Monday Coach Clair Axtell of Stonycreek and Coach Garner Pritz of Berlin went into a huddle and decided to play the game on the Berlin- Brothersvalley field due to the fact that the Shanksville back yard was much too sloppy. Marching through their parade of victories in much the same style that they showed during the second half, the Stonycreek Township boys took the first game .of the playoff series 5-3 last week on a number of errors made in the fifth inning by the Berlin boys. Frye, the Shanksville hurler, put on an iron-man performance, allowing the losers only one hit during the seven frantes, but his mates erred 3 times to permit two Stoystown rallies to cross the plate. This affected the outcome not at all as the Shanksville ten fell upon two Stoystown hurlers for seven singles and the Stoystown infield fell to pieces, giving up six errors. Bittner and Barr, the Stoystown pitchers joined to issue seven bases on balls which contributed heavily to the Shanksville cause. FRYE GIVES ONLY ONE Hrr Bittner gave up two hits and three walks and Barr, who replaced him, al- lowed five hits and issued seven bases on balls. Pitching airtight ball the entire route, it was only in the seventh and final frame that the Stoystown boys got their first bingle off Frye. It was a looping single by Stoystown Shortstop Custer which finally led to the second Stoystown tally when infield errors allowed the run to score. STONYCREEK DEFEATS GARRETT 54-21 Shanksville, Dec. 22-The Stony- creek Township forces of Coach Clair Axtell poured it on in the first county B league encounter of the season last night as they trounced the Garrett high school five 54 to 21 in a high scoring game. Stonycreek Wins Znd Halt Sohliall Crown Townshippers Go Into Play Oils Undeiecrted in Second Half Stonycreek Townships consistent softball ten yesterday afternoon clinched the second-half championship of the Somerset County High School Softball league by waltzing away to a 11 to 4 victory over Somerset Township at Shanksville. ln this manner the Shanksvillers, playing on their own back yard, got sweet revenge for the 4 to 3 pasting the Somerset Township ten handed them at Friedens, in the final game of the first half, pushing them out of the first half race. Coach Clair Axtell's smart little club will now be called upon to meet the Berlin-Brothersvalley Township High School in and outers in a three-game seri s to determine the county cham- pionship. Berlin won the first-half toga in a walk-away, going through the five game first half schedule undefeated. In the second half it was a different story for Coach Garner Pritz' Berlin cutfit as they dropped the first three games before staging a comeback to blast Friedens 18 to 3 and Rockwood 13 to 3. SHANKSVILLERS SHOW Fonzvi Although the victory was marked by fine playing which the Shanksville boys have demonstrated during the second half, they would have grasped the tOga and the opportunity to meet the Berlin- Brothersvalley boys had they lost the game, which was not expected in all quarters. Dively gave the same brand of play he has been showing the Stonycreek ten through the season and came through with three hits to become the heaviest Slugger for his team. The most spectacular performance of the game, however, may be attributed to C. Pyle who got three runs to be high scorer for his aggregation by go- ing around the bases via the walking route. This is a feat that has not been seen in sport circles in many a moon. Although Friedens pounded out seven hits to Stonycreek's six, they failed to use them to the best advantage. Three errors from the Shanksville boys gave them a wide-open opportunity, but they failed to take the chance. THREE HOMERS FEATURE Two homeruns, slugged in by the Shanksville boys, helped a lot in the scoring. In the first inning when Dively came to bat he hit the ball far afield for a four-bagger. That is the enviable distinction won by our Viking ten this season. For a number of years a noticeable gap in the fall sports program among the smaller high schools of Somerset County had been noticed. While their larger neighbors were completing their football schedule, the smaller schools had to be content with waiting for the basketball season to begin. This year the organization of the Softball League effectively solved this problem. A double Round Robin schedule was decided upon as the basis for determining the championship. In the first game of the season, the Vikings played a fine brand of ball to defeat Rockwood 16-3. In the next game, a close decision was dropped to Berlin by a 4-5 score. Then Hooversville and Stoystown were taken in easy fashion, the latter game being by a shutout score, 15-0. Somerset Township then turned the tables on Stonycreek by the same score as Berlin had done in the second game. This marked the end of the first half and Berlin was declared the winner for the half. In the second half the story was quite different. Our boys completed their schedule without a single defeat and in the playoff took the championship by winning two con- secutive games from Berlin-Brothersvalley. Much credit for a successful season is due to pitcher Clyde Frye who won eight games while dropping but one. Frye also had a batting average of .324 for the season, playing in all twelve games. Individual batting honors went to BobU Dively who had a neat percentage of .400 in twelve games. ' FIRST HALF Stonycreek .16 Rockwood . . . Stonycreek . 3 Berlin . ...... . 'Tnack The students of our school witnessed their first annual Track and Field Meet on May 12, 1959, as a part of the F. F. A. picnic. . Due to limited facilities, only five events were run off. Although the records made were not outstanding, the contestants showed signs of ability for their first meet. With our new Track and Athletic Field scheduled for completion this spring, it is ex- pected that the Track and Field program will gain more interest and our records will improve. CROAA Countnu, The second annual Cross Country Race was run off on November 14, 1959, with ten boys entered in the contest. Most of the fans expected Eugene Shippey to be the first to cross the finish line, but Sophomore Leroy Yutzey surprised everyone by sprinting across the line a few feet ahead of Shippey. Robert Berkey showed improvement over last year by stepping up from fourth to third place. Mervin Zeigler advanced from the eighth to the fifth spot. Dean Yoder repeated his performance of last year by hanging on to sev- enth place, while his brother Elwood was beaten out of third place by a very narrow margin. Four new faces appeared on the Cross Country team this year-Bill Duppstadt, Gene Landis, Delbert Snyder, and Ben DeArmitt. The Class Championship went to the Soph- omores with 24 points. The juniors had 27 points for second place, the Freshmen and Seniors ranked third and fourth with 55 and 37 points respectively.
