LCDR J. L. Hauser, Medical Officer, listens intently to a report on a patient. Medical Department, commonly called sick bay,', is constantly in motion. It must be to nurse the physical drawbacks of nearly 3,000 men for the duration of nine months. During the cruise, the department handled 30,500 prescriptions, gave 17,600 lab tests, saw 13,500 patients, had 2,700 X-rays taken of needy patients, administered 900 physicals, performed more than 100 elective surgeries and seven emergency surgeries and admitted one patient each day to its ward.
