Fletcher, department head, listens intently to a daily report from the bomb magazine leading petty officer. Weapons Department, including the ern- barked Marine Detachment of 57 officers and men, is reponsible for the firepower and in- ternal security which makes Shangri-La an effective instrument of national policy. Responsibilities of the department include the safe, efficient handling and assembly of bombs and rockets: maintaining the ready service magazines and bomb elevatorsg maintenance and assembly of special weaponsg operative condition of ship's guns and associated equipment, and providing highly-skilled fire control technicians. More than 5,500 tons of bombs were safely handled during the deployment, a reflection of the discipline and reputation of the fighting men who go down to the sea in ships. FIRST ROW -R AOCS A.N.
