The many and varied responsibilities of the Air Department are essential if Shangri-La is to accomplish her mission. Teamwork, dedi- cation and skill are essential among the four divisions for efficiency and safety. Responsibilities of the department include the movement of aircraft on the flight deck in preparation for launch and recovery, main- tenance and operation of crash and salvage equipmentg smooth and safe operation and maintenance of catapults and arresting gear, and operation of PlattfLens, a close-circuit television system used as a visual landing aid. Additional responsibilities include the move- ment of aircraft from the hangar bays to the flight deck, and vice versa, via three ele- vators: fueling of aircraft with lube oil and aviation fuels, and upkeep of the flight deck and hangar bays.
