I. . 1 hi .xg .SX Command History Financed, built and owned by the people of the United States, the attack aircraft carrier USS SHANGRI-LA was commissioned a fighting man-of-war on Sept- ember 15, 1944. The nation built the huge mobile airfield on a dream stemming from a war tragedy. Early in 1942, while the Amer- icans were recovering from the shock of Pearl Harbor, the fight- ing spirit was raised by a dra- matic raid on Tokyo led by Lieu- tenant Colonel James H. Doo- little. The raiding party was launched from the aircraft car- rier USS HORN ET, but security reasons led President Franklin D. Roosevelt to speak of the raid as coming from Shangri-la. The mythical place was a moun- tain utopia used as the setting for James Hilton's famous novel Lost Horizon. The war was still raging in the Pacific theater and HORNET be- came a toll of that war. The American people demanded a successor and a War Bond drive was launched to raise funds for a new carrier to be named SHANGRI-LA. The keel was laid January 15, 1943 and on February '24, 1944 Mrs. James H. Doo- little christened the Essex-class carrier USS SHANGRI-LA at the Portsmouth, Va., Navy Yard, After commissioning, SHAN- GRI-LA soon proved a worthy successor to the HORNET as she launched numerous raids against Japanese cities and naval ships. Shang's efforts and almost continuous strikes during July and August of 1945 earned the mobile airbase the nickname Tokyo Express. Near the end of the war, SHAN- GRI-LA returned to the United States as a part of Operation Magic Carpet with more than 1,700 soldiers and sailors from Okinawa. That transport trip from the Pacific theater was her last voyage until she participated in the first atomic bomb test at In 1955, SHANGRI-LA was taken out of mothballs and given a new look. The alterations found her with new steam cat- apults, an angle flight deck, and other innovations making her a prototype for the newer carriers about to be constructed. ln 1960, SHANGRI-LA made her last Pacific cruise and was re- assigned to the Atlantic Fleet, homeported in Mayport, Florida. She now serves alternately with the SECOND Fleet along the east coast of the United States and in the Caribbean, and with the SIXTH Fleet in the Nled- iterranean as part of the NA T0 Bikini atoll in 1946. ln 1947 she was decommissioned and placed inthe reserve fleet. 9-W ' ' -.-+- 3Tt':- 5,-If. -'.,.-.f44i... defenses. ln August 1969, 24-year 116 I
