The ability to use arich and an exact language is one of the highest attainments of cul- ture and one of the most desirable attributes of an educated mindt As a language algebra is a highly condensed language. English The Junior and Senior English subjects are enjoying an integrated program of literature, composition, and grammar. Although this is the first year of the program, the students find that it provides interest and variety in class work. The Reader's Digest is used in Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes to increase compe- tence in reading and spelling. Freshmen use the and comprehension. We learn the laws of this country and how they' were meant to be interpreted. This class in deep study of something very interesting. y American Histor class studying in their Workbooks ii First period typing class. Commercial work trains the student to become proficient in handling the basic business skillsg daily recording, typing, shorthand and bookkeeping. Science With the launching of the first space satellite, October 7, 1957, the space age came into being. We must equip ourselves with all the science knowledge we can if we are to live in the future world. Interest in science is being inc r e a s ed in Shamrock High School with the planning of a sci- ence fair this year. Students will be given an opportunity to participate in several categories of science. Physics class demonstrates coefficient of expansion. Biology class examines Herman General Science class studies flame. J .g ' 'fgmrl Q 9 Driver s Education Highschool courses canprovide the most favorable opportunity for youths to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for safe driving. The instruction set-up of greatest promise is a two-part drive r s education course. Around such a practical two-part system, Sportmanlike Driving course is built. It is made up of: l. Classroom teaching Z. Supervised road practice. Both parts of the course are regularly sched- uled in school curriculum. In classroom work youth drivers learn: What makes the good driver. Traffic laws and the reasons for them. The serious personal and social responsibilities of driving. The elementary principles of how a car runs . How to keep the car in good condition. How to protect and to be good pedestrians . Stopping distances at various speeds. Vocational possibilities in driving. The Latin class reads about the Harpies. Latin Il students read stories on different phases of the culture of the Greek and Roman nations . A great deal of reference reading is done to pro- vide background for studying languages and to appreciate our debt to these famous people . Em- phasis placed on a thorough understanding of syntax and vocabulary. In the second semester the class translates Caesar's Gallic Wars. Re- search is done on Caesar's life and all aspects of history related to this story. FOREIGN Our crown performance Siempre Una Vaca. The famous vocabulary line. LANGUAGE The Spanish I class tries to master a reading and speaking vocabulary and to learn the basic gram- matical forrns . Cultural material is studied both from the historical and the modern viewpoint. The importance of friendly relations with our neighbors of this hemisphere is emphasized. We Won't forget Mary Kay. Library and Study Hall The library is shelved with many good and interesting books, such as Fiction, Biography, History, etc. There is a verticle file, a shelf file, a card catalogue, and a complete section of reference books. The library is being improved more every year. Study Hall is anhour period set aside in every student's schedule for their benefit, to use for getting their outside work and class assignments. Studying in Study Hall. Making use of the periodicals P. E. girls build a pyramid. Girls get set to do front-rows. 'P.E. Class The girls' P.E, class meets the fifth periodg the boys' class, the second pe riod. In these classes the students learn the fundamentals of many different games. Emphasis is placed upon developing body skills, such as: agility, balance, and reaction. This year the girls were intro- duced to elementary tumbling for the first time, The boys have been working on individual skills in tumbling and acrobatics. S. this year was April 7, when we were hosts to the other High Schools of the County with Career Clinic. Leaders from many businesses and pro- fessions were here and discussed qualifications and training needed in the occupation in which we were interested. They also reviewed opportunities in their chosen field. It was a worth while activity and each student was enlightened in regard to their future vocation. National Library WeekQApril 12-151, was observed in Shamrock High School. Anattractive book display was on exhibit in the Library. At a special assembly the student body attended a Book Review. Tommy thinks it s his because his uncle and he have the same name. Tommy throws a big party and finds out too late that the money isn't his.
