Shamrock High School was born in 1968. Whether or not it was to be a successful high school was dependant on its first year, and that was in the hands of the new prin- cipal, Travis I. Ouzts. He had only 3 grades to work with in an unfamiliar building, but he carefully molded it all into a respectable school with a successful, if not phenomi- nal, first year. At the end of that first year, thanks to the principal, Shamrock was truly able to be standing proudly on Mt. Olive . But Shamrock had only one wing to it. Important to any high school is its sports and P.E. department, but Sham- rock didn't even have a gym. Mr. Ouzts knew that that was only temporary. A gym was built, and later another hall of classrooms. A few more years passed and Shamrock was rising to the sky , as well as to the top of all DeKalb County schools. The only other thing Shamrock needed was a strong foundation of school pride. There are not many people who can instill this into a school as young as Shamrock, but Mr. Ouzts did. What other school spends half a day giving out and receiving awards, honors and distinctions? As many, if not more, scholarships go to Shamrock Seniors as any other school in the county. Shamrock is the con- tinued recipient of complements from guest speakers and groups. A strong tradition of scholastic and athletic excel- lence now coats our school, and it can be said that the painting was inspired by Mr. Ouzts. Now our principal is leaving. Usually it is only by hind- sight that outstanding individuals are recognized,-but hap- pily this is not the case here. No greater memorial can be erected to the man than the one he established himself -- his school. As another tribute of appreciation and grati- tude, the EMERALD Staff of 1975 is dedicating this year's yearbook to Mr. Travis I. Ouzts. We give him this, our sincere wishesiof good luck, and again, our thanks.
