DERRELL MURPHY BENNY WEBER DIiRRliLI. MURPHY JERRY LINDSEY BOBBY REED CHARLES LUCK DALE WHSTISROOK Ball Boys Derrell Murphy Burns Up Courts Milk cows and you may become a basketball star. At least if you milk enough cows over a long enough period, your Milking Cows Aids Cager r r hands will become strong. After, that it's up to-the individual to adapt hrmself. That's what Derrell Murphy of Shallowater has done. lt'l been t I l effective in his ease, for he com-2 t bined his farm training with the basketball court. In a short while he was the star of the Shallowlter High school team, Last year Murphy, a tall, well- proportioned young man of 17 years, stepped into a starting r t berth on the Mustang quintet. He l played center and played it well, winding up the season with 562 points in 38 games. That's an aver- age of 14.79, not bad in your first year of varsity competition. Burn: Up Court The current season, however, ls even more successful for him and hc's burning up the Class B courts in West Texas. So far in 34 games this year. including his 15 points Friday night against New Deal, Murphy has scored 702 points. That makes his average for the 1943-:949 season 20.84 points per game And over r. two-year period, the modest .Khallowater caeer. has averaged 17.56 points per game. That's a pretty torrid point pro- duction for any high school player, whether he's in Class AA, A or B. What about this boy who is the talk of basketball circles on the South Plains? ls he spoiled? Is he a team player? Does he have violent likes and dislikes? ls he hard to manage? Charlie Booz. his high school coach. who should know him about as woll as anyone, can't sav enough for Murphy. Booz, who spent some time at Texas Tech, says that he has a good, even disposition and never has shown any symptoms of having a big head. As for the team, Murphys coach claims that hc is a natural leader and that the other boys look to him for orders. He is cool and calm in a ball game with that spark inside him that sets apart the player and the player-leader. Hun't Gone to His Head Flrs scoring record hasn't gone to hrs head. Ask hrm about his favorite shol, an overhead one- handed push shot, and he'll dash out on thc court grab a ball and demonstrate Moreover, rf he rnrsscs. which is seldom, he'll do it over until he gets it right. Last year lie didn't make anv all-state selections, which the rest of the Shallow:-rter student bodv couldn't understand. Brit ho diid find a place on the all-regional team, the onlv boy who was a un. nnimous choice of all the coaches. He was born Sept. t6, 1930, in BrN'an and lived there until he was about 12 or I3 year old, when the family moved to Shallowater. Hrs parents are Mr. and Mrs. 0. M. Murphy.
