The courses in fine arts which are offered to Shaler students are inspiring and varied. The art and music groups are among' the most active in the school, participating in worth- xvhilc entertaining and competitive events. Miss Warcl's outstanding' art students entered the l'ittslmrgli Scholastic contest in which Shaler students have been honored in the past. Others c-ntcrcrl posters in the Health Poster Contest. VOCATIONAL EDUCATICDN Ralph Seobbo is trying his skill at making a salad bowl on the lathe. The Industrial .Xrts Department here at Shaler has a variety of opportunities that will help fellows to establish successfully a trade of their own choosing. General Shop, which is being' taught by Mr. Segina, is open to all .lunior High boys. It gives the fellows their first chance to discover their ability in me- chanics. Students turn out shadow boxes, cooky cutters, and beautilul coffee tables. Sen- Y, l Don Arend, Bill Harrison, Jim Dodds, Richard McKee and Bill Slagel are working on a table. ior shop students under the superintendeney of Mr. Chalfant, make beautiful pieces of wood- work which is oi their own selection. These preferences usually consist ol' bookcases. all sizes ol lamps, and end tables. Metal Shop, taught by Mr. Campbell, develops the skill of the fellows in making' such things as lamp bases, sugar scoops, book ends, and stools. Shaler boys will be expert do-it-yourseliersf' 23
