AMARYLLIS KA Glenshaw Legendl 4' Storied-old and romance kissed Amid the willows set, The place where lovely julia lived Who danced with Lafayette. A thousand dreams come tumbling down About its ancient door- A misty-peopled pageant In fragile, quaint decor. See a phantom proud coach Waiting on the lawn, Rearing, prancing horses Eager to be gone And there, in happy prospect, One taught to curtsy low, A maid in silks and laces To greet the loved hero. As stately and as lovely As the lilies of old France, The perfumed, powdered ladies And debonair gallants Tread measuredly the dance. On the busy highway So set apart it seems, Sheltering its ancient logs Harboring its dreams, Like an old medallion In silver moonlight set, The place where lovely Julia lived, Who danced with Lafayette! pRuth jejery. 'Historical Note:- The locale of the poem is the home of julia Wakefield situated on Route 8. She was one of the favored few who had the much coveted honor of dancing with General, the Marquis de Lafayette on his triumphant visit to Pittsburgh in 1825. At a banquet preceding the ball, one of the distinguished speakers was Charles Shaler, for whom Shaler Township was named. 3
