1776-1976. How does one speak about two-hundred years of the past in present tenses? It is very possible to do so and especially in regard to educa- tion. Shaker Heights High School and the community of the Shaker Heights City School District is a good example of this. Students at Shaker have a rich heritage all about them. It is a mantel that fits well for the present student body adds to that heritage. It is a herit- age molded out of a wish to be excel- lent regardless of the task. It is a grow- ing concern for the kind of individual one becomes. It is marked by an in- creasing list of characteristicsg caring, knowledgeable, respectful, skillful. It is a blend of humanism and schol- arship. Shaker is this, it is seen in the renewed interest of the student body in specific activities. The great numbers of students involved in tutoring both fellow high school students and elementary students serves as one example. The mutual support that stu- dents give to each other in the extra- curricular activities of the school is another sign. The high achievement levels reached by many of the students in the area of scholarship is continu- ally noted. The political awareness of our community, both student and adult, remains keen. Shaker has that mix of past and present, that sense of a nation's two-hundred years, that awareness of the fact that we are the present. It is excitement at its best. Dr. Overs 8
