DEDICATION In recognition of his outstanding work as a teacher, his much-applauded contributions to school assemblies as a singer, his invaluable service and untiring effort as director of our Dublic ad¬ dress system, and his ability to teach chemistry well while never failing to keep his classroom in¬ teresting through his habitual good humor, we, the class of 1946, are proud to dedicate our annual to Mr. J. Norman Staiger.

FOREWORD Today the greatest of all wars is at an end. During this war, our school annual, the Gristmill, was designed primarily as a memory book published for the graduating seniors. Now cer¬ tain war-time restrictions have been lifted; and we, the editors, are proud to be able to publish a larger and better post-war Gristmill to please all of Shaker High’s students. We have met with many difficulties due to a national econ¬ omy changing from war-time to peace-time. We have had to change to a new printer, to accept a lighter grade of paper, to use zinc engravings instead of copper, and to be constant¬ ly fearful of labor disputes at either the printing, engraving, or binding establishments. But in spite of inconveniences and delays we believe the 1946 Gristmill is one of which you may be justly proud. It is our hope that this book will help to revive happy mem¬ ories and bring enjoyment to all who read it. For the 1946 Gristmill, as a pictorial record of our high-school days, is in¬ tended to show just what teams, activities, and people were endeavoring to keep Shaker Heights High School on top in 1946.
