' . ■ GRISTMILL 1946 PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS SHAKER HIGH SCHOOL V ;V Jf : FOREWORD Today the greatest of all wars is at an end. During this war, our school annual, the Gristmill, was designed primarily as a memory book published for the graduating seniors. Now cer¬ tain war-time restrictions have been lifted; and we, the editors, are proud to be able to publish a larger and better post-war Gristmill to please all of Shaker High’s students. We have met with many difficulties due to a national econ¬ omy changing from war-time to peace-time. We have had to change to a new printer, to accept a lighter grade of paper, to use zinc engravings instead of copper, and to be constant¬ ly fearful of labor disputes at either the printing, engraving, or binding establishments. But in spite of inconveniences and delays we believe the 1946 Gristmill is one of which you may be justly proud. It is our hope that this book will help to revive happy mem¬ ories and bring enjoyment to all who read it. For the 1946 Gristmill, as a pictorial record of our high-school days, is in¬ tended to show just what teams, activities, and people were endeavoring to keep Shaker Heights High School on top in 1946. DEDICATION In recognition of his outstanding work as a teacher, his much-applauded contributions to school assemblies as a singer, his invaluable service and untiring effort as director of our Dublic ad¬ dress system, and his ability to teach chemistry well while never failing to keep his classroom in¬ teresting through his habitual good humor, we, the class of 1946, are proud to dedicate our annual to Mr. J. Norman Staiger. First row. left to right: Miss Palmer, Mrs. Carothers, Miss Fry, Mrs. Bishop, Mr. Rupp, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Strela. Mrs. Anderson, Miss McCracken, Miss Barnes. Thrailkill 4 To the Seniors: It has been a real honor to work with you during your senior year. I have observed with great pleasure your outstanding capabilities, your splen¬ did attitudes, and your unusual capacity for getting things done. These characteristics were evident to me as I observed you at work, in extra-cur¬ ricular act ivities, and aiding in the administration of the school. During your years in the Shaker Schools you have progressed in the art of evaluating yourselves and your work. You will continue to grow and contribute much to your new communities wherever you may be. The world needs young people of your quality. The challenges which confront you are many. The opportunities are great. We are expecting you to make a fine record. I feel that the Shaker Heights High School is a better place because you have been here. I hope you will continue to be interested in your school and that you will support it whenever possible. May you have much success and happiness in your endeavors! Sincerely, Russell H. Rupp 5 JANUARY CLASS Left to right: Eleanor Cohen, social chairman; Bill Harper, treasurer; Marc Hyre, president; Mr. French, sponsor; Lida Faull Faber, vice-president; Mary Auer, secretary. We discovered some changes had been made: Mr. Rupp was the new principal, Miss Macdonald, Mr. Sins?er, and Mr. Booth were newcomers to the faculty, and Mrs. Motto’s room, 209, had been rejuvenated with soft blue walls and flowery designs. There were long lines up in the deans’ offices and at the book store win¬ dow, and “students” asked each other, “O why did it ever have to end?’’ On the seventh, the Budget Book sale was launched at the first assem¬ bly, and by the end of the week about 855 books were sold. The next assembly brought Mr. Sam Pierce, who with tales of Prospero’s magic brought The Tempest to life. The first football game with South ended in a hilarious 20-12 victory and was celebrated by the “Rupp Rumpus.’’ The following week, on the twenty-first, Cuyahoga Falls was also beaten, this time 7-0. Our “fighting spirit” was heightened by a shiny, new marching band, the seven peppy cheerleaders, and even a goat as mascot. On the twenty-ninth, Elyria edged Shaker out by one point; that night the Neetnac opened with Jack Collins’s “Hotlicks.” After a month of the grind, we realized school was in full swing. Suntans were replaced by “autumn pallor,” and book-covers were dark with drawings and doodlings. On the fifth of October, under the lights, the Raiders held Shaw to a 6-6 tie in a thrilling game. “Know Your Club Week’’ began soon after with daily skits over the P. A. Our knowledge of distant places was broadened by two assemblies. Mr. Paul Moritz, on the ninth, impressed us with the young people’s struggle for education in China. Later, Mr. Sullivan C. Richardson through vivid pic¬ tures took us into the depths of South American jungles. By the nineteenth, our goal of $1,000 for the War Chest Drive was topped. In blue jeans and loud plaid shirts, we had a rip-roaring good time at the boisterous All-Shaker Barn Dance. The next day the Raiders tied their U. S. rivals in a 6-6 score, but a week later it was Shaker over Wil¬ loughby, 13-0, with Jerry Galvin, the star. We welcomed N. E. O. T. A. on the twenty-sixth as a mighty agreeable break in the 8:30-3:30 routine. The final flourish was given to October by “Breezy” Branson and his soph¬ omores, who completed their successful season on the thirtieth. We started November off in a roar of cheers; the order of the day was a whole hour pep assembly featuring the Heights prexy and introducing the Skyliners, Shaker’s own swing band. However, the following afternoon, the Heights Tigers were triumphant, 7-0. At the assembly on the fifth, Sim¬ eon “Nutchuck” Oliver treated us to his Diano-plaving and the story of his experiences in Alaska. Down at Chesshire’s the seniors were tangled up in appointment cards, sittings, and proofs for Gristmill pictures. The week-end of the sixteenth was memorable with the first swimming meet of the year, the All-Shaker Bonfire Rally, Dads’ Day, and the Lakewood game with the new souvenir programs. The hilarious rejoicing at the proud 33-12 score even carried over to Monday when we celebrated the Lakewood victory and the whole successful season with a spirited rally. In the girls’ swimming meet on the nineteenth, the seniors gained the title. More cultural entertainment was presented by the Kryl All-Girl Sym¬ phony concert for which we “sacrificed” attending afternoon classes on the twentieth. During the “restful and relaxing” Thanksgiving vacation occurred the Inter-Club Sing on the twentv-fourth. Two hundred and forty-five of us prolonged our vacation because of the flu, and the rest hopefully asked, “Won’t they close school?” The victorious opening basketball game with Euclid-Central was followed up by the 12A Dance and the election of the All-Shaker Queen, Beth Lewis, to complete November’s program. 30 WINTER ROUND-UP December found us in fine spirits, for wasn ' t a “nice, long, luxurious’’ vacation in the offing? On the ninth, we even came to school on Sunday to hear the A Cappella Choir augmented by special solos and a piano duet. The riddle, “Who keeps playing Grieg’s Concerto third period?” was solved. Through the annual Christmas Drive, we made sure many needy families would have a real Merry Christmas. On the thirteenth, at the football banquet, letters were passed out to boys, who really deserved them for their faithful practicing and training. On the fourteenth, after taking in the Shaker-Shaw basketball game, we discovered that the Neetnac had elevated itself to the spheres of high-fa- luting night clubs with the addition of hamburgs. The Shares Club won in¬ creased prestige as it traveled to Baldwin-Wallace College to put on a pageant. There were Christmas programs galore at the Miriam Stage, Scribblers, Spanish, and Travel Club meetings. The festive spirit was everywhere; car¬ ols in different languages came from the classrooms, music glamorized the cafeteria while we ate, and a beautiful, glittering tree adorned the main hall. Friday afternoon the Choir presented its annual Christmas program, and then we were free for a hilarious vacation with the Junior Prom-Alumni Dance and the crowning of the Junior Queen for a real send-off. There was no horn-tooting nor wild confetti throwing to celebrate our return to school. The New Year’s Eve strains of “Auld Lang Syne” were drowned out by “The Prisoner’s Song.” Glaring lights on the stage and frequent P.A. summons gave evidence that club and homeroom pictures for the annual were in full production. On the tenth, the powerful matmen chalked up their fourth victory. The as¬ sembly honoring the January class was enhanced not only by Mrs. Evan’s flute solos, but also by J. Norman Staiger and his magic tenor voice. On the fourteenth, Exam Week, with all its horrors, came and left us with short nails, short pencils, and short tempers. The graduating class had its last “get-together” at the 12A dinner-dance on the following Friday. At their graduation on the twenty-third, the class was addressed by Dr. Paul Rehmus, superintendent of Lakewood. During the week of the twenty-first, the March of Dimes and the drive for clothing for European children were of prime importance. Dr. H. E. Kershner, a member of the Save the Children Federation, at an assembly made us truly aware of the extreme destitution of the war-torn countries. To complete January, the Congressional Club promoted the big “Hello Hop,” which honored the new lOB’s. A lively pep rally for the basketball game with Shaw started Feb¬ ruary off. The next week the Elyria game was followed by the Valentine Party at the Neetnac. In preparation for the formidable College Board Tests in April, review classes in almost all subjects were undertaken with ambitious hopefulness. On the twelfth, garbed in various authentic costumes, Mary Hutchinson, dramatic actress, enacted for us scenes from Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” “As You Like It” and “The Merchant of Venice” at the assembly. On the twenty-first, the Raiders with Lakewood opposing played their last basketball game of the season here; scheduled also that evening was the big HY Dance. February finished up on a scientific note when at the as¬ sembly on the twenty-fifth Glen L. Morris with his popularized science demonstration of “On the Beam” told us what to expect of aviation in the future. SPRING PREVIEW As the Gristmill goes to press, we anticipate a host of exciting and im¬ portant events. The second of March will bring the decisive swimming meet for the State Championship down at Columbus, Ohio. With such fa¬ vorites as “Holiday for Strings,” Duke Ellington’s “Rhythmoods,” “Manx Overture” and others, the Band, featuring J. Norman Staiger as tenor solo¬ ist, will stage a brilliant review on the eighth. Our other music organiza¬ tion, the A Cappella, will journey to Lorain High School for the annual Lake Erie League Choir Festival on the twenty-second. The lively schedule, in¬ cluding a mass rehearsal, movies, a dance, and dinner, will be climaxed by the evening concert. Among Shaker’s contributions will be “From Grief to Glory” and “Spring Bursts Today.” With sighs of relief we ll take time out for a long awaited Spring Va¬ cation starting on the twenty-fifth of March. However, upon our return, some of us will be faced with the terrifying thought of the Scholastic Apti¬ tude and Achievement Tests, and all of us will be overwhelmed with the gloomy prospect of those Co-operatives again. With the arrival of Opera Week, beginning on the twenty-second of April, school and homework will take a back seat to evenings and after¬ noons of Tannhauser and Aida. Also on the twenty-second, after all the confusion of signing petitions, a barrage of campaign speeches at the as¬ sembly will acquaint us with the candidates for the Student Council offices. We II vote first on the twenty-fourth at the primary election and two days later at the conclusive final election. With the coming of the month of May, the continuous sounds of tin¬ kling flasks and test tubes will give evidence of the struggle in the chem¬ istry lab to identify “unknowns.” On the seventeenth, after weeks of con¬ stant practicing, our own dramatic stars, midst scenery and footlights, will stage the senior play. On the twenty-second, at the All-Shaker Assembly, the seniors will be honored, and the newly elected officers will be installed by Mr. Rupp. On the thirty-first will be the lovely Senior Prom, traditional with its spring formats and corsages. Then finally the coveted “last week” will arrive. There’ll be exams to battle, books to return, commencement exercises to practice, and lock¬ ers to clean. Then in caps and gowns on commencement night the large June class will graduate. Forgotten will be the hours of memorizing and cramming, the hours of erasing marks in worn text-books. At last we’ll all be free to turn our thoughts to plans for the long and care-free Summer Vacation. 32 I 33 ■ Pifa ! 1st row, 1. to r.: Jeanne Mullan, Carolyn Kramer, Lynne Hatch, John Mapes, Betty King. 2nd row: Bob Laird, Martha Leas, Jean McLain, Card Hanson. P - V OUR RETURN In years from now when older, wiser, we return To look back in on well-known rooms and cherished nooks, We may recall some long-outdated urge to learn When gazing through those double doors at endless books. We’ll contemplate the choir room’s broad, ascending tiers While bits of old refrains run through our hazy minds. The laboratory down the hall brings back those fears Concerning unidentified “unknowns” and “finds.” We’ll vision touchdowns, marching bands, and girls in jeans While noticing the football field in just a glance; Surveying both the gyms will call up varied scenes, — A lively game of basketball, a special dance And only when we leave once more the hallowed halls And turn our backs on yesterday’s good times and fun, A homesick feeling taunts, a gloomy thought appals,— Perhaps our finest, grandest days of life are done. 39 First row, left to right: Brooke Calder, Jack Kennedy, Frank Sarka, John Ruffini, Albert Reid, Tom Reading, Forrest Rosser, Warren Morse, Charles Small.
