This fighting football squad never gave way to defeat and was scored upon only once. In preparing for the season's battles, the eleven brushed aside Berea 18 to 0, and fought Garfield, former winner of the Greater Cleveland Conference to a score- less tie. The first conference game against Euclid Central was marked by long, driving marches which resulted in two touchdowns by Captain Ralph Day. It was this team, usually our hardest opponent, which scored on a blocked punt knocked behind the goal line. Even the second and third teams were able to help in the track meet which was staged at the expense of Maple Heights at their field. Jack Nathan, the husky fullback, besides scoring three touchdowns, plunged over for two extra points. Working with a smoothly running team, Nathan was again able to romp over with two more scores against Brush. Adelbert Giel raced around end for another six points. In the fourth conference game, Bedford was completely smothered beneath ten touchdowns. Joe Quayle, sophomore halfback, and brother of Walter Quayle, former Shaker star, gained about 175 yards mostly around the ends and chalked up four of the touchdowns. Giel made a spectacular forty-yard run off tackle in the second quarter. On a bitterly cold day, urged on by exulting Shaker backers, the red and white eleven routed Shore at the latter's field to gain the championship. The attack was varied with Day sliding off tackle, Nathan ramming at the center, and Quayle racing deftly around the ends. These three boys did most of the ground gaining. A beauti- ful pass, Day to Petrone, gave Shaker a touchdown in the fourth period. A word must be said for the wonderful way the team worked as a machine. Petrone and Williams, ends, Petrequin, Sipan, Duncan, Koelling, and French, tackles, Kipowski, Brooks, and Hennage, guards, Meister and Burlingame, centersg and Day, Nathan, Quayle, Kovachy, Giel, Mallinak, Stone and Sanson, backs, must all be complimented on their fighting spirit and excellent accomplishment of their jobs. Although there will be letter men back and excellent recruits for next year, Coach Brubaker can hardly be expected to build as fine a team as he did this season. Among these are Jack Nathan, Pat Brooks, George Kovachy, Wilbur Koelling, Francis Leonard, Mil- ton Gillen, Dave Morris, William Sargent, Gordon Sinclair, and Barnett Taylor. Adelbert Giel, senior letterman, is a sure bet in the 880 yard run. James Hubbell, Wilbur Lang, Nelson Stern, and Bud Burlingame are working on the quarter mile, an event which greatly needs bolstering. Shaker sent only three representatives to the C. A. C. track meet. There, Koelling, Brooks, and Kovachy did well in gathering ten points. ln the first outdoor meet of the year, Shaker came through to victory over Euclid Central and Orange. Koelling was high scorer with 15 points. Despite the fact that the team lacks experience it still has fine chances t back its annual opponents. You've become such a famous surgeon I hardly dare speak to you. I've been delegated, however, to show you our fair capital of Martia, so let's go. That statue in the center of the station is a tribute to VVilfred Ward, the scientific genius of Shaker's class of '33, who invented the space ships that brought us all up here. Carl Szego is our president, and our republic is brilliantly governed. I always knew he'd get somewhere, be- cause he studied during every one of his study periods. Martin Davis is our treas- urer. Is there any news from Jay Stranahan? Yes, I knew he would do excellently as Hrst ambassador to the earth. Who, that platinum blonde? Yes, that's Virginia Wolcott, she models clothes at the fashionable shop of Kay, hladame Katharine to you now. And Tony Curro conducts our Martian Symphony Orchestra. VVe all enjoy his music. Do you recog- nize that soap box orator? Yes, itis Herman Hellerstein, the notorious Communist leader. Oh, that is our most beautiful theatre, given us by Arthur Stern, the multi- millionaire, and managed by Robert Brodie. Of course Jim Card and Helen Gold- stein are still playing opposite each other. Everybody adores them, their plays are packed night after night. Henry Irish is the sensational new type screen idol and Laverne Breves is his leading lady. Paul Christman sings tonight at 10 o'cIock over station RBPg you must listen, he's wonderful. Ruth Frankel is dancing at the new supper club of the Hotel Waldorf-Asteroid where Norma Bloom does the torch- songs, and Jane Deutsch is hostess. Elizabeth Jaeger draws crowds to that vaude- ville house across the street crooning 'Round Her Neck. That precious baby belongs to Genevieve Kintner. Oh, yes, of course, we always knew they'd marry some day. Elinor VVard has been married four times and is the most popular divorcee in this town. David Narten was injured two weeks agog his rocket ship crashed when he was stunting for our National Space Races. Harvey Lederman owns our most popular newspaper, The Martian, and our most brilliant editorial writer is Fred Freer. Jack Jarms reviews all our plays and is an excellent critic. Margaret Wilson, Kate Landrum, and Jane King are swimming and diving champions. Dave Schiffer and Bob Needham are rival lawyers, and both extremely successful. Ilse Dercum, now celebrated for her studies of horses, has just completed Gipsy, for which Ruth Leutner posed as rider. Speaking of horses, the best stables on Mars belong to Kennedy McCall. Our writers are Miriam Newell, who is famous for her novels, and Elaine Goldberg, who writes stories for children. Bill Burford is our foremost chemist, and Jim Sibbison and Jim Ragan are his first assistants. Boobie Smith is now professor of domestic relations at the University of Mars. Did you notice Ed Meister at the landing field? He announces the arrival of space ships. Everyone is talking of James Bergman. He has just received a medal for rolling a peanut with his nose across the new republic in record time. Betty Gormley is a noted business woman, president of the first Martian gum manufacturing concern. The Betty Shoppe is a grand place to dine after the the- atre. It is owned by Betty Jack, Betty Sands, Betty DeLoss, Betty Hutchinson, Betty Ahlman, and Betty Weil. Libby Boughton runs a tea room where she serves sandwiches cut into jig-saw puzzles. You can see Mary Jane Stewart and Margaret Nelson there any afternoon. Olga Velka has established a beauty salon and bought the copyright for a new beauty cream from Doris McCaslin. She sponsors Lou Hayden's beauty talks over station RBP. Bud Body is president of RCM, Inc., operators of RBP. Bob Edmonds is the star announcer. Page Fifty-seven the gristmill 1947 - - - fContinuedD Who is there? Oh, Arthur Feldman, the Fuller Brush man. What's that you say? Jim Currier has brought the corncob pipe back into its own. And here's Marvin Green, the playboy of Mars. You would never have thought it, would you? That's Charles LaMond, the famous pianist, talking earnestly to Jeanne Allen, pres- ident of the Women's Suffrage League. They are speaking of Helen Campbell, missionary to the moon, who is in great danger there. Mary Armstrong looks very austere in those glasses, don't you think? She's the principal of Miss Armstrong's Select Seminary for Young Ladies. Jean Camp- bell has already registered her little girls there. Esther Hick runs a nursery school for Marsettes. Janet Henshillwood teaches the youngsters to coo. Hello, Bob! That's Bob Polatsek selling apples on the corner there. Oh- I could go on and ong there are so many Shaker students here but you're due at the Embassy in three minutes. Lora Hansen is holding a reception for you. To Mr. Allen and Miss Sellers we leave the Washington Monument in memory of the trip and its sleepless nights. To the juniors we leave our ringside seats, while Mary Jane Stewart leaves the privilege of being Harper Garcia Smyth's front row stooge. To the sophomores, with magnanimous spirit and forethought, we bequeath our mantle of dignity to curb their bellicose incentives. May it fit like a glove. To the student body we leave the fire-alarms to be used as a diversion from the tedious grind, however, we caution them to use same only on warm, sunny days. The post-graduates leave their superiority and their privileges to no one. Part ll The Cakers' Club leaves its charter to Spelman, Miller and Morton. Jay leaves his Boy Scout suit to Jerry Dougan. Ralph Day leaves his knowledge of the King's English to James Colossal Yates. George Ford leaves his chiseling outfit to Jack Hayden. 'Del Giel leaves his frozen right ear as a precaution to hatless sophomores. Paul Christman leaves the interrupted love duets to Scotty Freeland. For keeps! Betty Sands leaves an eternal wad of chewing gum to Jane Weil. Ed Young leaves the real estate of the corners. cut off by his car to Bob Shackleton. Howie Hinig and Ruth Wise leave their height to Bill Simon. Betty Ahlman leaves her becoming blush to Ruth Young. Jane Deutsch leaves her bangs to Jean Black and Doris Patnoe. Booby Smith, the prisoner of Shaker, leaves his cell to Warner Ahlman. Charles Reverend LaMond leaves his ability to burn up the ivories with hotcha tunes and snappy rhythms to Martha Joseph. Leonard Goldberg leaves instructions on how to do a month's contract between classes to Jack Nathan. Sue Holman leaves her ability to beat them all in the scholarship race to Shirley Warner. Willie Ward leaves a puttering set with a special motor for lifting piano tops to Zenas Andrews. . Ruth Frankel leaves her danceability to Harvey Spelman. Harold Russell leaves a swollen thumb from inaccurate wielding of the ham- mer back-stage to all enterprising young stage hands. And we do ordain that these, the terms of our last will and testament, be ful- filled in a period of three months after our proposed graduation from Shaker.
