In recent years, girls have started partici- pating more in sports - some- thing unheard of in 1929! PROP. 13 also brought about some changes in the athletic program. We lost 1.V. football, basketball, and baseball teams. The extra-trip budget was cut 20'Xs, and there was approx- imately 53,500 cut in supplies. Seniors were also given the option of waiving P.E. in order to take classes they may have missed due to the closure of summer school. Despite these drawbacks and cutbacks, ath- letics continue to be the 4- H SPIRIT RAISERS at our school. The American way of life has many things different from the Brazilian way of life. The major difference that I have found is in the food and in the school. I left my school, my friends, and my fam- ily to have an opportunity to learn the things that only experience can teach me. I hope that I can live this time here to the fullest. Here l have found some very nice people who are willing to help me in the things that I find difficult. Before I arrived, I was afraid that I would not find a warm family. Try to remember - remember that night, the way we held each other so tight. But now we go our separate ways in these long and lonesome days. by Tammy Abernathy Today is a day for lovers. Today is a day to stop to 'say Hey, ya know what? I Love You! Today is a day to be together, to walk alone hand in hand, to hold each other close and tell our true feelings for each other. Today is a day we exchange cards and gifts of love. Today is a day to tell all you love of your true feelings of love and friendship and to share each other's love and affection. . By Beth Eiden Did you ever love a roca and know she didn 't love you? Did you ever feel like crying, but what good would crying do? Did you ever look into her eyes and say a little prayer? Did you ever see her dancing with the lights turned low? Did you ever whisper l loved her, but she never knew. Did you ever wonder where she is and ifshe's true to you? One day you'll find you're happy, then you'll find you're blue. You see, my Holmes, you're loving her no matter what you do. But it hurts - the price you pay. So don't fall in love - you'll be hurt before you know it. You see, my Holmes, I fell in love before, but l'm not going to show it. By Celia Leos When you're leaving your friends, it's like losing time. There always seems to be so much - until the last minute. . . when you realize just how much you've lost. By Corinne Huston Looking at Life Twilight had just begun to descend on the small quiet town. lsat there alone thinking aloud to myself and lglanced up to see a little old man standing several feet from me staring out into space as if to take the whole world into his eyes. This man no doubt had his share of licks in life but he was alive eagerly gazing about, looking at life. And l began wondering if I would be like this man fifty years from now. Would l still be living life? Would l still be looking at life? The little old man paused near me and turned to look at my face. He grinned broadly seemingly reading the thoughts in my mind then slowly, haltingly, he walked away looking at life. by Arlana Howze When you're leaving your friends, it's like losing time, There always seems to be so much - until the last minute. . . when you realize just how much you've lost. By Corinne Huston CREATIVE 79 THE LOST PRIZE The sky was bright from the beaming stars. Everything was quiet except for the song of the crickets. Mike and I sat in the swing on the porch taking advantage of a few peaceful moments. We were get- ting married the next day. I decided to break the silence. The rehearsal sure went smoothly. Yea, it was hard to believe. I just hope it goes that way tomorrow. I can't believe our wedding day is just a few hours away. Mike . . . Yes? Do you have any wedding day jitters? Are you kidding? You're the best thing that's ever happened to me. Still, most guys feel they lose their freeedom when they get married. Listen Angie, I was over that a long time ago. I just want to make you happy from now on. He kissed me. If I don't leave now it's going to be midnight and I can't see you on our wedding day until 4 o'cIock. There's one more thing, don't you ever forget that I love you very much. After an intitmate moment Mike left. I walked into my bedroom but knew there was no hope for sleep that nig t. By 9:00 a.m. the house was filled with noise. Mom was running around like the house was on fire. The men were already watching football, the kids were screaming for food, and my sisters were ignor- ing the kids. It seemed like a Christmas holiday. After breakfast, I took care of some final arrangements then started getting ready. At least today I had been promised to have special privileges on how much time I had in the bathroom. After all, it was my day. We arrived at the church at 3:30. The photographer was taking some final pictures before the cere- mony. At 3:58 everyone had left me except Daddy. It was my turn to make my grand entrance. Grand it was, the whole wedding was perfectly grand. At 8:00 we left the reception to go and change. Mike had rented a beautiful beach house for a week. After saying our goodbyes to the family, we left. Those next two hours in the car were special. All the things we laughed about shared I'll never forget. Then we arrived at the house. Mike carried in the lug- gage and then carried me into our own little world for seven glorious days. While he put things away I went into the bathroom to shower and change. Mother had bought me a beautiful negligee. When I walked out, Mike had the atmosphere and mood set with beautiful music and candlelight. It was then that I realized the prize I'd waited for so long and finally won. Mike snapped his fingers, I forgot to get champagne. There's a little store right down the street. Close your eyes and I'll be right back again. I laid down on the bgd and waited. So many emotions I felt, my mind was spinning so fast. I wasn't sure how much had passed when I heard the sirens screaming. He'd been hit by a car while running across the street. I went into shock when I heard those words, and I felt as if I too had died. Someone hac taken my prize away forever. by Tammy Daniel J- '4 ,Y- 80 CREATIVE ll IAM TOO SENSITIVE I watched the leaves falling off the trees and landing on the ground. I was worried. What if those leaves landed on some micro-organisms or small bugs, and killed them? The thought of this bothered me, so I turned my attention back to Mrs. Retz who was trying to explain the concept of freedom to our class. Mrs. Retz is a small, pale-faced woman with her hair worn in one, long brown braid. She's too young to be teaching us - she can't really understand our problems, because most people don't face our problems until they're over sixty, and senility sets in. Mrs. Retz was discussing how-the American flag remained flying even after the war. Sonia didn't believe that a piece of material could survive a war. I feel sorry for Sonia. She isn't as bad off as some of the others, but she can never comprehend things that Mrs. Retz says. Sometimes we can hear Mrs. 'Retz hitting Sonia when she doesn't compre- hend. This upsets Bruce because he thinks Sonia is pretty -I guess she is, but she bites her fingernails and that bothers me. Bruce always does nice things for Sonia, and he says he hates Mrs. Retz for being mean to Sonia. He always says he'Il get back at her. My best friend and roommate is janie. She is always telling me stories about her fiance, Marc. I listen when she tells me about the letters he sends, but I know that Marc is one of the many who never came home from Vietnam. Deep down, I think janie knows too, because sometimes at night I can hear her crying into her pillow. I'm glad Ianie's my friend because she's smart and we always have fun together. But it makes me sad about Marc. Sometimes I wish I had a boyfriend. Nicholas likes me because we're here for the same reason. We are too sensitive about things some people think don't matter. Nicholas and I made a scrap book and wrote down the things we thought did matter -like shells being washed up on shore by force even if they wanted to stay in the water, and like petals falling off flowers and leaving behind lonely brown stems. Maybe some people think Nicholas is my boyfriend, but janie knows he is just a friend. She always says, Rosie, someday you'lI meet someone as wonderful as Marc, and then you can be really happy. lt's good that Nicholas is your friend, but he's just not for you. janie and I walked into Mrs. Retz's class one day and saw little bits of red, white, and blue material scattered all over the floor. Mrs. Retz was sitting at her desk, paler than usual, staring at some scissors gouged in her wooden desk. Sonia was laughing because now she knew that the flag couldn't have survived the war. Bruce smiled at her and sat down. I don't know what happened, exactly, but I didn't see Bruce for a few days. Down the hall is where the worst students are kept. They are the ones considered dangerous to soci- ety. I never go down there, but janie always tells me scary stories about the inmates there. They aren't like me and my friends. We're not that bad off. Ianie says that Bruce was kept down the hall, but I don't believe her. Bruce is too nice to be dangerous. I told janie that I wouIdn't believe her until I asked Bruce myself. Bruce came back to our class few days later. I planned to ask him where he'd been, but when I saw the bruises on his face, and arms, I knew that Ianie had been right. Nicholas says that once you've been down the hall, you always end up going back. He says that there will be a trial, a secret trial, for Bruce, and we all have to go or they will get us. I was nervous at first, but now I'm not. I don't think Bruce is gui ty. I Nicholas tapped on our door after bed check. It must have been very late at night because it was pitch-black outside. He led Ianie and me down the cold halls until we arrived to the basement door. We went down the steps and were soon seated on the damp floor. All of my friends were there, and there were some people I didn't recognize. I could see Bruce sitting near a clear plastic box which held the scraps of the flag. janie pointed at it and whispered, Look Rosie, they even have evidence! I closed my eyes to hold back tears. I couldn't bear to see Bruce or the flag pieces held captive. The people I didn't recognize must have been the dangerous ones, because they had dark, glassy eyes which made them look evil. They kept asking Bruce questions about America and if he was an American or a communist. Bruce just cried. They made Bruce stand on a chair with a loop of rope around his. neck, and then they took the chair away. I didn't look at Bruce again, I just cried. I guess I am too sensitive. by Corinne Huston 82 CREATIVE W ' wk' X.. .. raw 1. C gm , Vw N ,M---V-- ' . ,fd 'f . ' . ,' ' ,,:. X , ,g,gg,1..,1 Q.. ., . fl-. A A H fm' wx .Q , V., 5 . K . I 3's EFFECT Due to Prop. 13, school supplies were cut 2071. Shafter High lost 2 teaching positions. Included in this loss were: two periods of counseling time, some assistance for Mr. Gibson, one custodial position, and some clerical time. Instructional field trips were also curtailed. Dr. Olsen expressed concern that because of Prop. 13 it will be more difficult to maintain the buildings the way we would like to have them. Dr. Olsen said that he is very pleased with the general morale of the staff and stu- dents. FACULTY 109 The job of the secretarial staff is not an easy one to carry out. Taking on the tasks of bal- ancing budgets, figuring pay- rolls, and all the problems asso- ciated vvith keeping an entire student body and staff organ- ized, means plenty of head- aches for those involved. In order to efficiently fill the need, there must be a suffi- cient number of personnel, which fortunately has not yet been affected by Proposition 13. The aides of Shafter High School provide an invaluable service to both students and teachers. By helping teachers, they allow them to devote their full time to the students. Although their job is not a glamorous one - one of yard duty, running errands, or tak- ing over the class for awhile'- it, nevertheless, is a service which is much appreciated. 1, Front Row: Sandy Thomas, loye Carroll, Arcadia Rodriguez iAudio-visuall, and Minnie Smith.
