Freshman days, sophomore days, Have so quickly passed, Junior days have come and gone And senior Clays are lasl. Memories, memories, A+ lhe Shaffer l-ligh, We love you loclay, We love you always- Our friends af our Shafler High. CLHSSES THE LAURIQN 1934 OUR GREAT FOUR-YEAR SYMPHONY Now, having reached The posTlude OT our TourTh year, we, The senior class, proudly look back upon The Tour years during which we all co-op- eraTed and worked TogeTher in harmony as a well organized orchesTra. We seT ourselves in posiTion Tor a grand prelude by displaying splendid sporTsmanship. In I93l our year was a TuneTul blending oT work and play. We were learning To play our parTs. The year I93l, our symphony became gay as we held an iniTiaTion parTy in honor oT The Treshmen. The volume increased in I933 as we cheered our TooTball heroes on. TT was during This year, also, ThaT many new Tellow members ioined us. This year, our TourTh year, we realize we have reached The lasT meas- ures oT our symphony. IT was This year ThaT we relucTanTly losT one oT our besT Tellow players, Blynn ScoTT. So Tar, we have been under The direcTion oT our leaders each year, buT now we each musT choose which parT we wish To Take in The greaT symphonies ThaT lie beTore us. TogeTher, we reached The Tinale OT our TirsT greaT symphony, and To- geTher, in spiriT, we shall sTrive To compleTe successTully many more. We hope To have The world applaud and be proud oT us. Over his keys The musing organisT, Beginning doubTTully and Tar away, FirsT leTs his Tingers wander as They lisT, And builds a bridge Trom Dreamland Tor his layq Then, as The Touch oT his loved insTrumenT Gives hope and Tervor, nearer draws his Theme, FirsT guessed by TainT auroral Tlushes senT Along The wavering visTa oT his dream. Now is The high-Tide oT The year, And whaTever oT liTe haTh ebbed away Comes Tlooding back wiTh a ripply cheer, lnTo every bare inleT and creek and bay: Now The hearT is so Tull ThaT a drop overTills iT, We are happy now because God wills iT, No maTTer how barren The parT may have been, 'Tis enough Tor us now ThaT The leaves are green. 44 T02 RICHARD ARNOLD Dick Entered 3, World Friendshio Club 3, 4, LAURION Staff 3, 4, Assistant Editor 3, Cardinal Staff 4, HI-Y 3, 4, Student Body Program Chairman 3, Class Vice-Pres. 3, s Club 4, Glee club 4, Pres. 4, Football 3, 4, Queen Esther 3, Joseph 4, Der Deutsche Verein 4, Dramat- ics Club 4, Red-l-leaded Step-Child 4. C4 I9:x THE LAURION 1934 THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC Affer such a successful year of music in 1933, fhe music deparfmenf of fhe Shaffer High School confinued wifh renewed vigor ifs proiecfs in I934 under fhe apf leadership of lvlr. Safes. The Boys' Glee Club has made many appearances which have all been hearfily applauded. They have sung af P. T. A., af fhe Women's Club, Teachers' lnsfifufe, and also offered fwo numbers befween acfs of fhe icnool play, The Red-l-leaded Sfep-child , which was presenfed in fhe a . The orchesfra, composed of fwenfy-one pieces and direcfed by Mr. Safes, has also had a profifable year. They have accompanied fhe Boys' Glee Club pracfically everywhere and have given pleasing aid fo all of fhe programs which have been launched. When if was decided fo puf on again anofher canfafa, fhe boys and girls immediafely ioined forces as fhe combined chorus and puf forfh fheir earnesf efforfs. The sfory chosen was Joseph , which followed closely fhe Biblical accounf. The casf included: Donald Suydam-Joseph: Lois Van Gorkom-Joseph's sisferq l-larold Van Gorkom-Jacob: Richard l-lefz-Reubanq Waldo Unruh-Judah, Grace Weyand-Princess: Rosie Unruh-Angel: Richard Arnold-King, Evelyn Unruh-Queen. All parfs were very well played, and everyone worked hard fo fhe very end fo make if successful. As a resulf if was accounfed as good if nof beffer fhan lasf year's. During fhe period preceding fhe presenfafion of Joseph , all fhree deparfmenfs of music puf on various parfs of fhe canfafa in programs abouf fhe communify. The firsf of fhese was a program given af fhe Bapfisf church on Sunday nighf, and a similar program was presenfed af fhe Mennonife church fhe following Sunday. The fhree deparfmenfs fook parf in fhe Musical Fesfival af Wasco. They gave an Easfer Sunrise Service for fhe communify. This was a new fhing here, buf was well re- ceived. All who heard fhese selecfions declared fhe sample was so good fhey would surely hear fhe resf. The affendance was epoch making. A frumpef ocfeffe was formed under fhe leadership of Allen Barfel. lf was composd of Allen Barfel, Mike Janzen, Waldo Unruh, Richard l-lefz, Johnny Penner, Louis Edwards, and Arnof Annis. This new proiecf was ample compensafion for fhe loss of The Girls' Trio, broken by graduafion. As a grand finale, fhe deparfmenf gave numbers af baccalaureafe and graduafion. Though all members have given fheir besf whenever called upon, fhey could nof have had such a happy and prosperous year wifhouf fhe capable direcfion of fheir leader, lvlr.
