The theme of the 1955 Sha- dean, as you can readily see, is in lniun Style. When the Shadean appears as a finished product, it repre- sents many moons of work and planning, most of which is the personal responsibility of the Shadean Staff. This group of warriors solicited for advertise- ments, supervised and arranged for pictures, and this year sponsored an extra project, the Ohio Power show called Watt's Magic, to provide the quality year- book we have always had in the past. Under the di- rection of Miss Pauline Swamberg, co-chiefs Judy Lang and Deanna Steed, together with a co-operative stat? deserve much credit for the successful management ofthe current edition. The Council mei in fepees fall 0ur Futures fo decide Our Shadyside Council is the guiding light for our tribe. Their leadership helps show the right path to follow. When a ques- tion arises we can always depend on the wis- dom and understanding of the council. With a firm hand of guidance they help us blaze the trail and clear the obstacles in our path. This year the Board of Education has pro- moted a project providing for o more ade- quate school system. The citizens of our local school district are to be commended for pass- ing the Bond Issue when they voted on No- vember 2. The provisions of the Bond Issue are as follows: The remodeling of the present high school building and the construction of a new addition. An addition to the Mead ele- mentary school. Conversion ct three class- rooms into a gymnasium, cafeteria, and Ii- lorary in the Central Avenue elementary school. Construction of a modern twelve room elementary schooi. There were new teachers in the Home Economics, Music and Physical Education Departments. ln our crowded conditions this year patience and understanding were necessary between faculty members and the entire student body. This year's faculty was co-operative and en- couraging. The teachers instilled a desire for good citizenship and respect for our fellow students in each of our classrooms. Their en- thusiasm for scholarship, good sportsman- ship, and fair play produced an atmosphere that entered into the activities planned and carried on by the students of Shadyside High. We are proud to have had these men and wo- men help us along our various paths and give us advice in our many fields and activities. s 7 Mrs. Geneva Dunfee English Adviser to Librarians Mr. Daniel Georges Social Studies Student Council Adviser Jr. High Football Coach ff . This block contains many important events. The Junior Class Play, Poor Papa, was a great success and the wonderful Junior-Senior Prom Tropical Paradise, given for the seniors of '54, was beautiful. Classmates attended the Hi-Y-Teen Formal, and the Sweetheart Ball sponsored by the Student Council. Several of our members played on the O. V. A. C. Championship football team which won another trophy for S. H. S. The fourth block completed the Totem Pole. We claimed the aspired position of Seniors, thus ful- filling our dreams. In sports was produced the first undefeated, untied football team in Shadyside's history. Basketball, too, attracted our boys. Sen- ior rings displayed initials of our Alma Mater. Senior pictures were taken. The Hi-Y-Teen Formal, The Snoball with Christmas trimmings, was a holiday highlight. As spring approached, we looked forward to our Junior-Senior Prom, our class play and meas- urements for caps and gowns. Then Commencement! Our Totem Pole of memorable years at Shadyside High was finished. Proudly we marched to the tune of Pomp and Cir- cumstance to receive our diplomas. With the sing- ing of our school song we realized that this was the grand finale of our school days but we were happy that we earned the right to be called Alumni of Shadyside High. 9 JOSEPH BITTENGLE Class Officer lPresident 1, 25, Track 1, 2, Basket- ball 1, 2, Baseball 1, Student Council 2 fSecretary 21, Stage Crew 1, 2, 3, 4, Field Crew 1, 2, 3, 4, Man- ager 1, Football 1, 2, 3, 4, Senior Scholarship. Three moons of hard long practice sessions during the sum- mer vacation and then more practice pow-wows after school and in the evenings finally brought the band up to the standard set for the half-time performances to be given at the football games. The participants made clever formations and demonstrated fine pre- Dhedo, cision marching. Mf- -l05ePh Tfosak After the very successful football season the band provided music for the recognition service for the foot- ball team and the Junior and Senior class plays. The year ended for some thirteen members when the an- nual Spring Concert rolled around. Much credit is due the Band Mothers who started their drive to raise Wampum for new uniforms to be worn by next year's band. The donation ofthe time and services of the band mothers proves that such an active auxiliary is of great help to a capable director such as Mr. Trosak, who through many winters and summers at Shadyside has always produced one of' the best high school bands in the state of Ohio. Dur- ing these years he has constantly produced excellent musicians, who have been awarded musical scholar- ships for their abilities. This year's ofticers were: President, David Crunellep Vice President, Jack Strott, . Secretary, Jim Richards, Treasurer, Lynn Young, His- torian, Bob White. .5 's 'M 30 First Row-P. Ryncarz, J. The band played Let Me Call You Sweetheart in honor of the three maidens, one of whom would be crowned Queen of the 1954-55 Homecoming festivities. The activities of each of the three maidens were announced and finally it was announced that Phyllis Livorno was the 1954 Homecoming Queen with Joyce Davis and Judy Lang as attendants. Co-Captains of the football team crowned Queen Phyllis. She was presented with mums and the attendants received corsages, compliments of the Hi-Y. The Homecoming was a success as the undefeated Shadeans thumped highly tooted St. Clairsville 32-13, and added another scalp to their belts. They were responsible for tallying up the scores on the score board and taking core of the loud-speaker sys- tem during the pigskin season. They ran the proiectors for movies shown in connection with classwork. The spotlights and lights and lighting dur- ing plays were handled by these boys. At assembly programs these fellows might be seen setting up microphones for speakers and students. The Librarians Club is a well known club. They had charge of the library and were under the direction of Mrs. Dunfee. The organization is small this year, composed of sixteen members. As a proiect for raising a little wampum, the girls operated a stand selling typing paper, spiral pads, pencils, and notebooks at vari- ous times of the year. The girls had a dusting party in which they dusted the books in the library and the study hall. At this time each girl dusted all the books on the shelves to which she was assigned. They were also in charge of trimming the Christmas tree in the library at Christmas, and the attractive bulletin boards at various places in the library were decorated by these maidens. The Newspaper Staff of this year consisted of members of the Sten- ography class. There were eight is- sues of the paper, one for each holi- day and a large senior edition to cli- max all the activities of our gradu- ating class. As a novelty, different colored paper was used for each is- use. A name was selected for the paper this year, which was used many years ago, Orange Et Noir , and it was decided that the name would be kept every year hereafter. Each month two new co-editors were appointed to work on that month's edition. The staff worked faithfully getting up-to-date sports news, news of club activities and other items of interest to the student body and faculty. First Row, seated-D. Steed, L. Piper, l. Perunko, P. With the experience of these boys this year you may look forward to a hard fighting team next year. First Row-D. Thomas, J. Circosta, B. Gehrig, J. Watt, B. Wiggins, E. Norris, D. Kalman. 46 Undefeaied OVAC Champs The T954 Shadeans took the opening scalp from the Mounties for the fourth straight year. The Shadeans needed only tive plays to send Dick Hoskinson around end to paydirt for the first touchdown. After Fleming scored twice, Roger Day, Howard Day and Dave Marsh once, Pat Miller added six points which brought the score to 42. The longest runs of 79 and 60 yards were by R. Day and Marsh, respectively. The Shadeans defense held the Mounties scoreless. For its second victory Shadyside's war- riors paddled upstream to Mingo. The score was 20-6. Within fourteen minutes Shadyside was on the warpath and clicked oFf three touch- downs. H. Day scored first on a 37 yard sprint. The second came on a pass from Frank August to Bob Bittengle, and Pat Miller scored the third on a one yard plunge. ln the second half Mingo scored its only touchdown, but the placement was wide. In one of our biggest games, Shadyside up- ended Union 34-13, for their third straight win. Union drove 75 yards for the first touchdown, th e placement w a s wid e. The Shadeans then bounced back with Pat Miller plunging over and adding the extra point. Then they ignited in the third period and Howard Day scampered 7l yards. August pass- ed to Fleming and both Days hit paydirt again. Thus Union was burnt at the stake. 47 Tightening their grip on the OVAC Single A title, the Shadeans massacred Tiltonsville 33-0. lt was vic- tory number five. In a sloppy, muddy field with fre- quent downpours, the Shadeans still showed speed and agility. Roger Day scored two touchdowns on runs of seven and ten yards. Miller and Hoskinson each scored once with Miller adding three extra points. The Ramblers tried hard, but could not get past the Shadean 25 yard line, as the defensive line bottled the Rambler's Fortunato. 48 With the varsity playing o n l y one quarter, the Sha- deans rolled to their fourth straight victory 45-27, and a helpless Yorkville club fell to the orange toma- hawk. lt was the Sha- deans first scalp from the Ductillites since Chief Magyar has been here. In six plays Shadyside had th r e e touchdowns, two by H. Day and one by R. Day. How- ard got his third on a pass from Frank Aug- ust. With the reserves playing the rest of the game, Dick Hoskirison and Dave Marsh tal- lied and Lou Krupa caught Lartg's pass to score. The red-hot Sha- dean warriors passed on one of their stern- er tests in great style. For their sixth consec- utive win without a loss, the Shadeans added the scalp of the Red Devils to their wampam belt, 32-13. The Red Devils scored on a first quarter drive, but Shadyside immediately on the comeback sent Roger Day 47 yards to pay- dirt. Miller's conver- sion put the Orange ahead for keeps. H. Day scored next on a T4 yard run, Miller scored, and B. Bit- tenale scored on a T4 yard pass from Aug- ust. The last Shadean touchdown was m a d e by Howard Day. The undefeated Or- angemen took number seven, as the orange ar- row downed the highly regarded Bridge- port Bulldogs 20-0. The Shadeans fine defensive team led by such boys as Buzek, Hemann, lvko- vich, Corbett, Hoskinson, Fleming, Whitmore, and the Bittengles held the Bulldogs scoreless. Rog- er Day scored first from 21 yards out. Don Flem- ing scored in the last five seconds ot the halt on a pass from August, and Miller went T4 yards for the last one. He also added two ex- tra points. This win pad- ed the Shadeans lead in the OVAC. Thus, Bridge- port's OVAC to t e m hopes departed to the happy hunting grounds. Climaxing the most successful football sea- son inthe annals of Shadyside his- tory, the warriors of Shadyside in winning. number nine and also the thirteenth straight over a two-year period massacred B a r n e s - ville 38-7. The Shadeans were paced by the Day boys. Chicken scored three times and Roger scored twice. Bob Bit- tengle scored on a 17 yard toss from August. Playing their last game were Frank August, Bob Bittengle, Joe Bittengle, Steve Buzek, Dick Cal- lendar, Joe Chacko, Co- captain Bill Corbett, Howard Day, Roger Day, Co-captain Don Fleming, Dick Hoskin- son, Joe lvkovich, Bob Martin, Craig Whitmore, and Joe Wilson. Win number eight coupled with Union's loss to Triadelphia gave the Shadeans our first OVAC single A Championship. Roger Day caught an eight yard August pass and also scored on an 85 yard run. Frank August scored twice on a quarterback sneak and a 25 yard keeper. Don Fleming intercepted a pass and scored. Dick Hoskinson scooped up a blocked punt to score and Herby Dunning scored from eight yards out. The Dad's Night crowd watched mostly the re- serves tor the varsity played only sixteen minutes. 49 Cheerleaders-Wilhelmenia Farrier, Mary Lou Holmes, Judy Lang, Sue Hughes, Lark Piper Hardwood O V A C Champs For the second straight year the Shadyside hoopsters have won the OVAC single A championship, under the fine direction of Mr. Dick Erickson. This year's team compiled a 17-5 record which was the best year since 1923. The Orangemen were led by two of the most outstand- ing guards in the valley, Frank Tokarz and Jim Porter. Both boys were among the leading scorers in the area. Tokarz set a new modern scoring record for our school by sinking 41 points against Sherrard. He also had the highest scor- ing average of Class A boys on the Chic side. Using the same fast break that Marshall College does, enabled these boys to have a great one-two punch. They were both out- standing on their outside shots. Although not scoring many points, Don Fleming, again showed his tremendous rebounding power and defensive skill by holding players much taller than he down to a few points a game. One of the most improved players of the year was Bob Bittengle. Last year Bob showed flashes of form, but this year he came through in fine style, being one of the top scorers on the team. Bill Wiggins and Stanley Wach alter- nated the fifth position throughout the year. Both boys contributed to the success of the team. From this year's team we will lose our Co-Captains, Bob Bittengle and Frank Tokarz, Don Fleming and Stanley Wach will leave also. They showed fine ball playing at tournament time. This year's team, with nine regulars back, should be able to improve on last year's fine record. Mr. Falbo has nine games scheduled for the '55 team. He is having an extensive build-up cam- paign for next season since he will lose fifteen boys through gradua- tion. He is building up the number of the squad to 23. This well- balanced training program should bring fine returns. Approximately thirty boys went out for the first ofticial track sea- son for Shadyside High School, and if practice sessions mean anything, they should have a fairly good sea- son. Both the freshmen and the varsity teams have new uniforms and equipment. Every evening after school the boys may be seen running and training. The team will participate in the 'Following events: T00 yard dash, 220, 440, 880, the mile, shot put, discus throw, pole vault, hurdling, broad lump, high iump, and relays. , 1- Ev , j -111 , L ff' 7-I 'rin'-ffl V X if 1 fx ' ' l X 2 I Ay!
