SHADYSIDE, OHIO JUNE, 1954 'I IN. v jJ6fIli, jluz, The 1954 Shadean Stal? is happy to present to you, the student body of Shadyside High School, the records of the past school year, which were compiled in The Little Red School House. You will find that in this cathedral of learning there were many enlightening activities experienced by us at that time. On this site we have known the freshmen to frisk about lightheart- edly, the sophomores to plod along resolutely, the juniors to dash hither and thither eagerly and the sen- iors to saunter in fantasy. Acquaintances were met at appointed times and many lasting friendships have been begun. Here we have known the thrill that comes with seeing a waving of banners, the playing and marching of the band, and the rousing cheers of spectators at athletic contests. We recall the festive mood that prevailed in anticipation of the formal events. Above all we have the mental impressions received from the concentrated efforts of teacher and pupil cooperation in class and club activities. We have accomplished much with the book and slate in The Little Red School House. 2 ' fied 5chrwL Jlnuae, S ADMINISTRATIGN STUDENTS .... ACTIVITIES . SPORTS .... ADVERTISING . . Mr. Paul F. An encouraging smile at an opportune mo ment, a word of counsel when things might go askew, and a bit of sympathy when they do, let us know that they are not merely our instructors but our friends as well. They are ready and willing to help us overcome seemingly insurmountable barriers. Their slates always contained something to re ward our anticipation. Along with the ad ministrative staff and faculty, we are for tunate and grateful to have the wise and sincere guidance of an alert Board of Edu cation at Shadyside. Mr. Donald F. When September, 1950 rolled around, a group of individuals with bewildered looks roamed the halls of Shadyside High. Yes, we were freshmen, and this was our first year in high school. We were as green as those who came before us and iust as lost as they. The next year we were occupying the sophomore homerooms. We began taking part in the school's activities. This was quite evident when we appeared in the band, vari- ous clubs, and athletic contests. Signs of lead- ership began to spring up here and there. The third year found us ready and eager to be Juniors. The arena style plays, The Trysting Place, The Twelve Pound Look, The Monkey's Paw, and A Sunny Morning were some of our accomplishments. These productions were the means of raising funds with which we put on the biggest social event of our school years-The Wishing Well Prom. The seniors were our guests. When we entered high school for the last year, we realized that now we were the dig- nified Seniors. We received our class rings, and wore them proudly, displaying them to anyone who might show the least bit of in- terest. We were an extremely busy group, active in all organizations in addition to plannina special senior activities. Individual pictures were taken and as always, some of us were disappointed because we didn't look like Marilyn Monroe or Tony Curtis. The football players of our class played their best. They set a record making the foot- ball season the finest since 1948. lf our play- ers could have had one wish, it probably would have been to be Juniors again, to start that 1953 season all over. One of the highlights of our high school :areer was the beautiful Winter Wonder- land formal held on Saturday, December 19. This was sponsored jointly by the Hi-Y and Y-Teens. With the closing of the pigskin season our interests turned to the basketball court and its hoopsters. Again the members of our class entered the spotlight. Upon returning from our Christmas vaca- tion, we began to look forward to the senior play. It was an outstanding performance with an unusual setting. ln the spring our fancies turned to base- ball. Several of our boys were on the very successful team. Enthusiasm was at its highest peak when we went to the Junior-Senior Prom. The beau- tiful music and the gay decorations will long be remembered by those who attended. On Commencement night we were quite happy and proud to walk across the stage to get our diplomas. As our Alma Mater was sunq we knew that we were ready to step into the big wide world and leave Shadyside High. One of our proudest possessions at Shadyside High School is the band-ten short of one hundred strong. We know the time taken up in practicing marches and drills, per- fecting formations, and making music was well spent as we observed the spell-bound fans at athletic events and the proud specta- tors at the Spring Concert. The crowds watched our inimitable style when we par- ticipated in the sesqui-centennial program at Bellaire. The small band played at the meet- ings of several social groups and for the class plays while the band members of the gradu- ating class entertained at the pep rallies and assemblies. The complete coordination achieved by the members of this band is attributed to the patient and helpful guidance of our fine band director, Mr. Joseph Trosak. His perseverance has made the band what it is today-one of the most outstanding in the valley. We are proud to be wearing the orange and black. Seated-J. Fleming, R. Przebeszvski, J. Duvall, R. MIXED CHORUS The beauty of Christmas time was brought out in the musical program given to the public on Sunday, December 13. The candlelight added to the quiet dignity of the opening scenes as the Mixed Chorus marched down the aisle. The music was appealing as the keys ot the piano were touched by Jo Ellen Duntee. The hushed audience was impressed by the quoting of the Christmas story by No- vella Steele. The back breaking hours spent in practice were rewarded when the enthusi- astic audience proclaimed this performance to be the best ever produced by students at Shadyside High School. When you hear them discussing the Shadean dummy you may be sure plans are being made to get a picture of some group or activity. Precision is a must for these stu- dents. The preparation of the yearbook was done by competent workers headed by Tim Kreiter and Jim Wisvari, co-editors. The busi- ness matters of this group were in the hands of Rosemary Yonko. NEWSPAPER STAFF The Newspaper Staff, this past year, con- sisted of members of the newly formed class of Olifice Practice and Stenography. There were seven issues of the paper, one for each holiday and a large Senior issue to climax the activities of the graduating class. The staff tried to give the most up-to-date sport news, club news and gossip. instead of elect- ing an editor for the entire year the staff used two co-editors for each issue. Shadyside fans who hadn't seen a game for many ea y rs came to cheer and support the team The Shadeans placed two boys on the All Eastern Ohio team-Flem- ing and Brkliacic. Coach Magyar will lose nine men from this year's team. Those graduating are: cen- ter, John Bloom, end, vornop back, Torn Moore, back, Don Visnicg back, Tim Kreiterg tackle, Andy Van Campp back, Lou Tomich, tackle, Bob Brkliacic, and back, Charles Kovolo. The Orangemen were in the top four oHensive scor- ing teams ofthe valley, and Moore was one of the top scorers. Charles Li' gum. Harry Helms, Don DeCoy, Torn Bud' zek, Danny Boyd. S . ll The T9 ans opened the season at home by defeating Mt. Pleasant for the third straight year. lt eans three plays to send 53 edition of the Shade only took the Shad Joe Bittengle to paydirt for the first touch- down. Day then stol g runs of 40 and 75 yards. After Moore scored twice Day and H k' e the show with lon , os anson once, and Bittengle twice, Brkliacic added to the score with tour extra kicks which brought the sco re to 40-6. The Mounties w ill have to wait until next year for reven ge. With Tim Kreiter Covering 205 yards in an air attack and making two touchdown passes, the Orangemen up-ended Dennison for their second win of the season in as many starts. Day scored twice, once on an 80 yard run around end. Moore also collected T2 points with Hoskinson and Fleming having one touchdown apiece, Bob Brkliacic made good three of six extra points, leaving the :core at 39-6. The reserves played almost the whole second half and thus a too- lcpsided score was averted. Hoping to capture a third in a row, the Sha- deans travelled to Benwood to meet the rugged lronmen of Union, who were later runner-up in Class A in West Virginia. Tom Moore highlighted the evening by carrying Gongola's kickoff 86 yards to paydirt. Hos- kinson went over from the one yard line and Brkliacic made good both extra points. Even though they played their hearts out in one of their best games of the season the Shadeans were defeated 22-14. Special credit was given to the fine defensive line play of the Shadeans. On the next Friday night the Orangemen were trying to get back on the comeback trail at Yorkville. Although the favorite, the Ductillites led by Smith and Tutera were too much for the iniury riddled Shadeans to overcome. They scored once each in the first and second period and led T2-O at halftime. The reiuvenated Shadeans came back to score a touchdown on a pass from August to Visnic. The Ductillites also scored once in the second half as the score ended 19-7. With a two and two record the Shadeans played host to a powerful Tiltonsville eleven. This game was our Homecoming game and a high spirit was experienced by all. Although the boys played a good game it was not good enough. Being still hurt by many injuries they went down to defeat at the hands of Tiltonsville, who was one of the top five teams in the Conference single A race. The Tiltonsville team scored three times in the first half and once in the third period, as the score ended at 25-O. The biggest thrill of the year came when an underdog Shadyside eleven defeated a fast and big team of St. Clairsville at their field. Capitalizing on an early fumble the Sha- dean's Dick Hoskinson scored from the two yard line. The Shadeans' defensive team was in high praise for their hard tackling and rugged line play. The Orangemen scored once more in the first half on the re- covery of another fumble. Both teams traded touchdowns in the second half as the score ended 21-7. Shadyside, having gained their early sea- son stride played host to a small but fast Bridgeport ll led by small Joe Blaha. The Shadeans took command from the begin- ning and were never headed. Tom Moore did the bulk of the scoring as he tallied three times with Visnic making one counter. The game was highlighted with the long runs of Moore and Blaha. Brkliacic made two of his four chance for extra points as the score ended 26-7. Then on the Shadeans only day game of the season a small team from Powhatan played host to them. The Indians hadn't much luck all year and this game proved to be the same as the fast improving Shadeans ran them all over the field. The scoring was well distributed with Visnic, Moore, and Day all tallying twice. The game fi- nally ended with the score at 38-7 with Brkliacic again making two extra points. In the final game of the season the Sha- deans played host to one of the fastest teams around - Barnesville. Although Moore, a stellar halfback was sidelined, Visnic more than made up for his absence as he made several long runs. Much praise was also given to the fine passing of Tim Kreiter. Barnesville scored first on an 80 yard run but Shadyside scored three straight TD's while limiting Barnesville to one as the score ended 20-14. Ax. During this sesaon, the Shadyside basketeers were under the di- rection of Dick Lief Erickson, former Tiltonsville High and Marshall College star. The Orangemen were the most im- proved team in the Ohio Valley. They had no individual stars. Instead, the whole team was made up of stars, which is evidenced in the fact that no one play- er ran away with the scoring, for in almost every game the Shadeans had three men scoring in double figures. Our captain, Tom Moore, was his usual self as he led the team in scoring and was one of our chief playmakers. This year when Coach Erickson an- nounced his lineups everyone thought he had let the heat overcome him when they heard that a mere sophomore was in the guard slot. However, Jim Porter developed into a redhot ballhandler and is certain to bring more smiles of triumph in his two remaining years. Porter's run- ning mate was hefty Frank Tokarz, a iunior. Tokarz hit consistently from out- side on his one hand push shot. After sitting out all last year's bas- ketball season because of an iniury, Don Fleming sparked the Orangemen from his center slot. Although not scoring many points, he rebounded well and held down opposing center, some of whom were almost six inches taller than he. Our other forward was Bob Bitten- gle, another iunior. Not scoring much in the first part of the season Bob was really on the ball in the closing games. Warren Consolidated 54 action are: Roger Ward, Dick Schau, Howard Day, Stan Wach, Pat Miller, and Bob Polinsky. Of these varsity men only four will be lost through graduation: Moore, Ward, Schau, and Polinsky. Next year the Orange varsity will have the same team, with the exception of Moore. The Shadean team really got the support of the town and the school this season, for more adult tickets were sold in the first two home games than were sold in the total of all last year's home games. As our regular season came to an end we found ourselves the champions of the OVAC single A league. We came from behind to beat Tiltonsville in our last game to cinch the championship. This was our first championship in the history ofthe school and came in the ini- tial year with Dick Erickson at the helm. With high hopes Shadyside iour- neyed to Martins Ferry to meet Bridge- port in the first game of the tournament. We had lost to Bridgeport once and de- feated them once in our regular season and the game was considered a toss-up. We started off slowly and never seemed to hit our stride in the first half as Bridgeport led l5-'l'l and 30-27 at the quarters. Then Bridgeport came out for the second half red hot as they wid- ened their lead to ten points at the end of the third quarter, 50-40. Shadyside battled back to gain a two point edge in the fourth period but just couldn't make it as the score ended 67-59 with Bridge- port winning. if Duck SGHG u F'? lQ'5K4'-L Left to right-Phyllis Porter, Nancy Ambler, Wilhelmenia Farrier, Elaine Hughes, Janet Hemann, Lark Piper. Through graduation last year only three players were lost, leaving a well-experienced team for our new coach, Mr, Falbo. By observing the boys during practice games one would note that Mr. Falloo had drawn up an extensive training program. This should promise plenty of fine action dur- ing their rugged nine game schedule. The team will have an extra incentive to play since they have finally received their long needed new uniforms. Most of this year's players also partici- pated on an intermediate team last summer which took the League championship. Shady- side fans can almost be assured of a good season this year because of our fine array of talent. Having only four seniors on the squa.t this year we should have an equally good, or better team in the future.
