Shady Spring High School Shady Spring, West Virginia Mrs. Charlotte McKay The 1980 Spring Staff has chosen to dedicate the annual to Mrs. Charlotte McKay. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, she is a graduate of Ohio State Uni- versity with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education. After gradua- tion she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper. Mrs. McKay came to West Virginia in 1950. She and her husband managed a farm in Mercer County. They later bought a drive-in restaurant which she man- aged, while he managed other restaurants. Her first teaching post was at Richmond District School in 1966. She came to Shady High in 1968. She presently holds a Masters Degree from Marshall Univer- sity and has earned additional graduate hours from West Virginia University. Mrs. McKay, you are a dedicated, conscientious teacher, and the yearbook staff is proud to honor you with the 1980 Spring dedication. Tiger football now posts a 6-3 season and a prediction that we will win over the Patriots, our final game. The Shady Ladies, with the basketball season at the half- way mark are now 8-2. Those long three years seemed to fly by a little too quickly. Dances, games, the library, assemblies, uni- forms, and Shady Spring, are all things of the past. But they are never forgotten by those who learned, grew, and enjoyed their senior year. At times seemingly insurmountable tribulation afflicted this class. They cried, asked why, and then surged onward. Shady Spring will never again have a class of 1980. just as they will never again go to Shady Spring. Brent also snared an eight-yard pass from David Lusk in a four touch- down performance! Senior Terry James had 102 yards on 21 carries. Lusk scored on an eight-yard, second quarter sweep, for our second touchdown. In the second half it was all Bays, beginning with his 47-yard run on our first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. The Tigers controlled the game, amassing 263 yards in total offense to 75 for the Rough Riders. The visitors could manage just six first downs, while Shady Spring had 16. The Rough Riders deepest penetration into enemy territory came late in the first half when following a 29-yard pass they moved the ball to the Shady 14 yard line. Anita McComas The Lady Tigers completed their best season since they were organized 4 years ago. They finished the regu- lar season with a 16-2 record. The team lost to Inde- pendence in the Sectional Tournament after each team enjoyed a win during the regular season. Coach Ford attributes their success to a lot of hard work and “want- ing to win.” Also an important factor was the height and natural ability of some of the players. Grappler Girls Grappler Girls serve as an aid to the wrestling coach and team. They are chosen by Dix Manning, Head Wrestling Coach. During wrestling matches, the girls do individual scor- ing, team scoring and keep time. They also do announc- ing for the large tournaments. There are several fund raising projects done by the Grappler Girls. During the summer ads are sold for the football program. Usually the captain of the squad pre- pares the program for printing, and it is sold at the gates during football season. Another project was selling ads for a program book of the Regional Wrestling Tourna- ment hosted by Shady Spring High on February 15-16. Also blue and gold spacepoms with slogan “Tiger Wres- tlers 1” were sold to raise funds to purchase uniforms for the girls. Grappler Girls are kept very busy, especially during wrestling season. They are on hand for all home wres- tling activities and travel to some away matches to sup- port the guys. MARK CHAPMAN 98 lb.
