She has taught at the following high schools: Mark Twain, Clear Fork, Woodrow Wilson and since 1953 she has been teaching at Shady Spring High School. Mrs. Cantabery teaches shorthand and office machines. She is also a Guidance Counselor. Mrs. Cantabery has always been influential and steadfast in the upgrading of Shady Spring High School standards and the promotion of high ideals among all students. She is a dedicated, outstanding teacher, interested in students and concerned about their education. The Annual Staff proudly dedicates the 1979 Spring to Mrs. Floda Cantabery. A native of Beckley, Mrs. Cantabery is a member of First Baptist Church and the following professional organizations: Alpha Delta Kappa; Kappa Delta Pi; NEA; WVEA; and RCEA. Her hobbies are reading, home-making, and dancing. A B Degree in Commerce Bowling Green Business University Bowling Green. Blessed by God above. Here’s a toast to Shady High School, From the young and old — Hail to thee our Alma Mater; Hail Blue and Gold. FUNKY SSHS students were asked in a poll taken by the Spring Staff to express their opinions on various sub- jects. Several observations were made from the results obtained. For example, a top movie is found in the top ten books. Except for dating, football dominated the favorite pastimes list, and students favored the gas guzzlers rather than the smaller cars. It was also discovered that students could not fol- low directions or had difficulty in making decisions. Here are the results: SSHS Best Sellers 1. Jaws 2. The Bible 3. The Hiding Place 4. Coach Fred Hill said, “It was the best win all year because of all the obstacles.” We ran an outside veer which completely surprised the Reb- els. Tiger seniors, Dennis Robinson and Eric Phillips were outstanding on offense and Mickey Sobeski came through with another big move when he made an interception as Mullens attempted the extra point. A well executed ball game, excitement, smiles, cheering fans, a pretty queen and her court make Homecoming '78 one to talk about and remember. Tigers, we are no longer “jinxed!” H O M E C 0 M 1 N G Little Miss Tiger Delores Lilly WAY TOGO Tiger fans! 9 SPIRIT WEEK The National Honor Society sponsored Spirit Week, for our annual Homecoming game, to create spirit among classmates and faculty. We started off with Roll Your Own Day”, you could dress and do your own thing. We had visitors from Sesame Street, Kiddie Land, the circus, and a referee from the local sports store. On Tuesday we all got our adrenalin flowing and dressed up as the opposite sex, that is, if we knew how to. On Wednesday we recognized “A Day in the Past”. Some dressed up like their parents used to (or still do), and then some wore yesterday’s dirty socks. Thursday began the battle and real “watery” spirit, of “Civil War Day”. Friday was our traditional “Blue and Gold Day” and the peak of our spirit-filled week was shown by the cheering fans as the mighty Tigers defeated the Mullens Rebels 7-6. Greg Sweeney In a special election in the spring of 1978, Mike Hartsog was elected president of the Junior Class. Other officers elected were Ritchie Lilly, vice-president; Christina Ransom, secretary; and Greg Sweeney, trea- surer. Mike is a member of the student council and the annual staff. He likes bowling and playing the guitar. Ritchie has only been living in the Shady area for two years, but says, “he likes Shady a lot.” Ritchie likes photography and has future plans to become an architect. This is the fourth year Christina has held a class office. She likes sports and clothes but hates mushrooms. Greg is holding a class office for the first time. He thinks the Class of '80 has a lot of SPIRIT. Greg plays basketball and enjoys listening to music in his spare time. The main responsibility for the juniors is sponsoring the Junior-Senior Prom. Fund raising activities to finance the prom were selling school jackets and candy. Theme for prom night was Stairway to Heaven and music was provided by The Visions. The highlight of the evening was crowning of the Prom Queen. Five senior girls made up the Prom Court: Debbie Fields. Karen Lilly, Teri Lilly, Hazel Redden, and Kathy Shrewsbery. Thanks to the class sponsors and the many juniors involved, the prom was a big success. Miss Ida B. Pendleton headed the list of class sponsors. Assisting her were Mrs. Patricia Hartsog. Ron Reed, David Patton. Larry Snuffer, Mrs. Charlotte McKay, Jack Richmond, John Lucento, Mrs. Martha Hale, and Mrs. Sarah Chapman. 44 Class The class of '81 seems to have adjusted very well to the high school atmosphere during their first year here. The Sophomores began their year by working on the Sophomore Class Float. They entered their float titled “Tigers Knock ’em Dead” in the homecoming parade. The float won second place (High School Division). The Sophomores have been working on many projects. They started by selling giant size coloring books, next they sold candy bars. The Class of '81 looks forward to spon- soring the Junior-Senior prom next year. Sophomore sponsors for this year were Joy Bowman. Rupert Blank- enship, Sandra Sheatsley, Jane Comer, Connie Okes. Willie Chandler. Paul Pettry. Edsel Redden, Kent Mar- tin. and Connie Ewing. The journey of a lifetime begins with a single step. Reaching and searching or that intangible moment. Teachers A re People Too It is sometimes difficult for a student when seated in a :lassroom, to think of a teacher as being anything other than a teacher. But the person holding that grade book or writing on the blackboard does have a life outside of school. Teachers do not wait with bated breath for Monday mornings nor do they feel disappointment on “snow days.” If anything, they look forward to “TG1F”. Thank God It’s Friday, with more zeal than students. They do not enjoy grading papers, dealing out “F’s”, or giving students a hard time. Teachers want, very much, for their students to succeed, to do well. Teachers do the best they know how and it’s time we appreciated their efforts. Mrs. LaCleda Mankin Head of English Department. And the Tiger defense allowed Mount Hope (3-2) beyond the 50 yard line only once all night. “It might not have been pretty, but we’ll take it.” remarked Tiger Coach Fred Hill. “They (Mount Hope) played a good ball game.” “They were tough.” Hill continued. “They had a good defense, but we did too.” “They (Shady Spring) used the same defense we were expecting,” said Mustang Coach Jim Oyster. “But it’s hard to move the ball on offense when your best player gets injured early ” Mustang halfback Felipe Newsom got hurt in the first period of play and they were unable to move the ball but for a brief drive at the start of the second half. Shady started the game off with a bang as Lynch nearly broke the opening kickoff for a score before being knocked out of bounds on the 47. A pass from quarterback David Lusk to wing back Jeff Tilley carried the ball to the 35. but the drive stalled. After the teams traded two punts. Mount Hope fullback Roger Newsome fumbled and Tiger safety Dennis Robinson recovered at the Mustang 18 yard line. A face mask penalty moved the ball to the nine and Lynch scored three plays later. Shady again had a scoring opportunity with 8:35 left in the half. Following a short Mount Hope punt the Tigers took over on their own 47. Lynch carried six times in the drive for 26 yards and Shady gained a first down at the Mustang 2 Vi. But in three consecutive plays Mount Hope pushed them back to the 25 and the half ended. Mount Hope mounted its only march of the game at the beginning of the final half. A 26 yard scamper by quarterback Jackie Painter and two aerials moved the ball to the Shady 34. but no farther. The Tigers mounted another drive in the fourth quarter from their own 46. Lynch and Til- ley carried the brunt of the attack, with an encroachment penalty and a David Lusk to Bruce Hanshew pass moving the ball to the Mus- tang 12. But Mount Hope rose to the occasion and took over on downs at their own 14. After another short punt Shady had the ball at the Mustang 27 again. However. Mount Hope tightened the hatches at the 14 and blocked Jeff Tilley’s field goal attempt with 1:47 left in the game. The Mustangs tried several long passes as time ran out. but to no avail. Shady’s potent offense was held to 117 yards rushing and 20 yards passing. But the Tigers held Mount Hope to an even lower total with 53 yards on the ground and 32 through the air. The Tigers also held a 12-3 edge in first downs and won the battle of the defenses. Shady Spring 0 6 0 0 — 6 Mount Hope 9 0 0 0 — 0 SS John Lynch 6 run (rush failed) «HT Dennis Robinson, Def. Nicholas County Coach Mark Redde said. “Both teams are defensive-minded and played true to form tonight. Quarterback Robbie McCullough accounted for all of the Grizzlies points midway through the third quarter, faking a pass before skirting the right end of the Tiger defense for a five- yard touchdown run. He then added the deci- sive extra point. McCullough’s touchdown was only the sec- ond scored against Shady Spring this season. The scoring play capped a 10-play drive cover- ing 65 yards for the Grizzlies. It immediately followed the Tigers only score of the game. John Lynch provided the Tiger touchdown bursting through the middle of the Grizzlcy line for a 79-yard touchdown run on the first play of the Shady Spring possession. The Tigers’ Mic- key Sobeski thwarted a Nicholas County drive with a pass interception. The Grizzlies had gained possession when the snap from center sailed over the head of punter Jeff Tilley and was recovered by Harold Hinkle on the Nicholas County 34-yard line. Neither team threatened during the remain- der of the second half, the game ending with the Grizzlies in possession at their own 41. The drive that proved to be the difference th game started with the Grizzlies Rick Sweene returning the kickoff 25 yards to the Tiger 45. A 13-yard pass from McCullough to Bill Bai ley and a 22 yard run by Billy Dyer were th key plays for the Grizzlies. In the first half, neither team was able t« mount a consistent drive. Both managed to pu first downs back to back only once, fhe Grizz lies had the only scoring opportunity when with the Tigers setting up on offense on thei own 29 after receiving the Nicholas Count; punt, a fumble by quarterback David Lusk wa recovered by Mickey Simms on the 10. Subs Star Shady Outlasts Rebels A couple of substitute running backs helped Shady Spring eke out a 7-6 victory over Mullens. Shady scored in the first quarter on Robinson’s one yard run. Despite a bad knee and an injured Achilles tendon, Tilley came in to make what turned out to be the winning kick. Mullens’ touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Terry Echols took a handoff from quarterback Keith Caldwell on a third and seven play. Echols broke wide open for a 35 yard scoring run. Mullens then faked a PAT kick, giving the ball instead to Caldwell for an attempt at a two point conver- sion. But Caldwell’s pass was inter- cepted by Tiger defensive end Mic- key Sobeski, insuring a Shady Spring victory. Mullens piled up 206 yards against the Tigers, including 30 yards on 3-8 pass attempts and 176 yards rushing in 35 carries. Shady compiled 187 yards, all on the ground, for its homecoming vic- tory. Shady’s record is now 7-1 on the season with the victory at Stokes Stadium. Hinton’s record falls to 4-4 on the year. In the first uuarter the Bobcats stunned the Tigers on a 47-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Billy Garten to Ed Joe Jiminez for a 6-0 advantage. The drive covered 68 yards on only three plays. Hinton moved into Shady territory by virtue of a face mask penally against the Tigers. On the third play Garten called a quick out to Jiminez who turned just in time to bat at the pass. He cradled it in while on the run sprinting untouched down the left sideline to score with 3:30 remaining in the opening quarter. The Tigers answered with one of two touchdown drives that relied exclusively on the running of backs John Lynch. Jeff Tilley and Terry James. On the first drive. Lynch and Tilley sandwiched first down runs around a personal foul call on the Bobcats. Three first downs took the ball to the Hinton 2 yard line. Lynch barreled over to tie the game with 2:50 left in the first half. Hinton went to the air after the ensuing kickoff. But a Billy Garten screen pass was swiped by Shady defensive back Tim Connor. Connor leaped over one tackier on his way to a 32-yard return and a 13-6 Shady lead. Connor’s touchdown and Tilley's extra point kick proved . to be the deciding points in the game. In the second half Shady was able to uncork its running game a second lime, marching 64 yards on six plays after taking the second half kickoff. Another personal foul, a face mask call against Hinton, helped sustain the Tiger drive. From the Hinton 30, Lynch displayed the hard up-the-middle running that Shady had missed against Mullens. He ripped off runs of 10. 18 and 2 yards. The last 2 yards put Lynch in the end zone for the final Tiger points and a 19-6. But Hinton was able to come back in the third quarter when running back Britt Shirey went off tackle zipped by Tiger defensive back and traveled 39 yards to cut the lead to 19-12. Shady used up 6:30 on the clock in the final quarter with a drive stalling on the Hinton 20. But they used enough time to prevent a third Hinton drive. r S h a d y o v e r Hinton Each team was penalized six times and each for 45 yards. Hinton held a 209-182 margin in total offense. The Cavaliers, ranked 10th in Class A A. used scoring plays of 41. 25 and 6 yards in a game that saw West erase a 19-0 Shady lead in the third quarter. Shady had scored seconds into the third quarter, recovering a Cavalier fumble on a kickoff. The Tigers need only a 15-yard run by senior taleback John Lynch and a 20-yard run by senior running back Eric Phillips. But from that point on, with 10:47 remain- ing in the third quarter, the game and a prob- able ranking in the top eight Double-A schools, belonged to Greenbrier West. The Cavaliers recovered a Shady fumble after an exchange of possessions and used only 4 plays to drive 55 yards to cut the lead to 19-6. Senior quarterback Marvin Bonner’s 41- yard pass to Ricky Estep put the Cavaliers on the scoreboard. Shady had completely denied the Cavaliers their running game up until the score, so West went to the air again for it’s second touch- down early in the fourth quarter. Again West needed only four plays. Three running plays moved the ball to Shady’s 39 and set up a 25 yard strike from Bonner to end Jerry Scarles. The Cavaliers, getting stronger on defense as the game wore on. denied the Tigers a first down on Shady’s next possession, and took over the ball at their own 15-yard line after a 50 yard Jeff Tilley punt. The climactic touchdown came just plays later as the Cavaliers needed only 1:22 to drive the necessary 85 yards. One play garnered 72 of those as senior fullback Johnny Walker broke off tackle and sprinted to the Shady 10 yard line. Two plays later halfback Timmy Boothe went around end from six yards out to tie the score at 19-all with 6:02 remaining in the game. Sophomore Julian Bennett, who had just missed on a 32-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter, booted the conversion kick straight through the upright to cap the incred- ible comeback. In the first half. Shady all but dominated the Cavaliers, running Lynch, Phillips and fullback Terry James at the middle of the Cavalier defensive line. The Tigers used 11 plays. 10 of them runs to score early in the second quarter. Lynch and Phillips took turns moving Shady from its own 20 down to the Greenbrier 18 yard line. The one pass of the drive, and the only pass completion of the night for the Tigers came with quarterback David Lusk hitting split end Doug Polk for 17 yards and a first down on the West one. Lynch barrelled in one play later. The Tigers increased the lead to 13 to 0 sec- onds before the half, driving 68 yards in 6 plays. Lynch, on a quick opener up the mid- dle. outran Greenbrier’s defensive backs for 46 yards and his second touchdown. Shady held a 293-253 edge in rushing yard- age and a 17-8 advantage in first downs. Lynch was the leading ball carrier in the game with 205 yards on 26 attempts. It was the final regular season game for both teams, hut the win kept alive Shady's chances of reaching the post-season playoffs, should the Tigers now move up in Class AA rankings. Shady ends the regular season at 8-2 while Independence ends its year with a 4-6 record. Except for two offensive spurts b the Patriots, the entire game went according to Shady's brand of football —- a dominant defense controlled the tempo while a patient offense gradually wore down the Patriot defense. Not until one minute remained in the second quarter did Independence cross into Shady terri- tory. The only Patriot score, a one-yard run by quarterback Steve Castanon. was set up by a 51- yard breakaway run by running back Carl Pack. The Tigers, using nearly all of the first quarter to get its running game flowing, began its first scoring drive with three minutes left in the open- ing period. The Tigers used ten running plays to move 74 yards and score with two minutes gone in the sec- ond quarter. Lynch, a senior tailback, carried on seven of those ten plays, including a 23-yard cut- back jaunt for the touchdown. For the game. Lynch carried the ball 19 times Shady 21.1ndependence 6 for 129 yards and surpassed the 1.000-yai mark for the season. Lynch injured his ankle in the third penc but not before his running had helped bui an insurmountable Tiger lead. The Tigers increased their advantage to I 0 late in the second period after forcing tl Patriots to punt from their own 4-yard line. Shady took over on the Patriot 35. Thn plays — all runs by Lynch — resulted in tl second touchdown, with Lynch barrelir over from the I-yard line. A pass interception by senior defenso back Dennis Robinson set up the final Shac scoring drive. Shady took possession at the Independent 26. Lynch combined consecutive runs of 3. and 13 yards — the last boosting his seasc total over 1.000 yards — to set up a I yat touchdown run b senior running back Je Tilley. Tilley gained 73 yards on 13 carries. The Tiger defense continually kept tl Patriots deep in their own territory except ft the sole Independence goal drive. Robinson, in addition to his pass interce) lion, carried 8 times for 40 sards as the Tige totaled 281 yards rushing while holding tl Patriots to only 105 yards on the ground. Shady gained 17 first downs to nine ft Independence. Robinson was joined b Mi kev Sobeski in leading the team in turnove recovered for the season. Shady, which must now wail to see if it w be reinstalled in the state’s rankings of the tc eight AA teams, ended the 1978 season wit its best record since 1956.
