For the past thirteen years he has been an outstanding asset to the athletic department, serving as head basketball coach and assistant track and football coach. Coach Chandler graduated from Sophia High School in 1953 and attended Concord College and West Virginia University, where he received his Master's Degree in Physi- cal Education and Biology. He resides in Beckley with his wife, Mary Katherine, and his three children, John, Tom, and Susan. To you. Coach Chandler, we extend our appreciation and a special Thank You. Is everybody ready ' Kickee the Feetball. 48 Debbie Link TYPIST Co-Ediiors, Michele Hart and Lisa Phillips attended the Taylor Yearbook Workshop held at Morehead State University, Morehead, Ken- tucky. There they received instructions and various ideas on new techniques of yearbook organization. Staff members were busy during the summer months selling advertising to local merchants. The staff sponsored the annual selection of the Hall of Fame as well as the election for Miss Spring and Court. A new concept was developed in yearbook organization. The annual was divided into three seasonal sections having three staff mem- bers to serve as head of each division, Fall, Winter, Spring. Shad; Spring was the only Raleigh County school represented. The Studen Council raised over $1300.00 in the Little Miss Tiger Competition ii order to sponsor the Homecoming Dance and activities. Little Mis Tiger was Tammy Troitino of Glade Springs. Canned goods were donated by the members to the Salvation Arm; during Christmas to be distributed to needy families in the area. Tin Student Council also sponsored Shady’s first Snowball Dance. At the en of a successful year the annual Student Council-National Honor Societ; picnic was held. Christmas Time TIGER BAND The Tiger Band is now under the direction of Mr. Kent Martin. Upsetting tradition the Raleigh County Marching Festi- val was held at Shady Spring High. The majorettes, fea- ture twirlers, and field conductor received first place awards and a number 2 rating was given to the Tiger Band. The band is much improved this year and we are really proud of their display of school spirit and their support at all athletic and school functions. i '' MARK DESKINS President Hippie Day The National Honor Society entered a float in the Homecoming Parade this year. The theme was Walking Tall. During Homecoming week NHS sponsored Spirit Week. Members took a trip to Concord College in November for NHS Day. Also, a tour of the campus was given along with entertain- ment from the Drama Department. The NHS undertook the task of sponsoring the annual May Festival. This year's theme was Once Upon a Time” ... An initiation banquet was also held this year for all new members and their parents. A new concept in drama, ’’Children’s Theatre,” was introduced by Senior Drama Class. Veteran drama students wrote and pre- sented plays in area elementary schools. Being so well received, they were asked to perform for a Children's Party at Black Knight Country Club. Meanwhile, rookie drama students were researching for oral reports on the different phases of drama. Senior drama sea- son finally ended on February 28 (after 3 cancellations Old Man Winter”) with the combined talents of the veterans and rookies in a very successful and entertaining performance of four One-Act Plays.
