West Virginia University Always smiling no matter how many are waiting to see him. Principal's Message You, the Seniors at Shady Spring High School, have a power virtually beyond measurement. For it is to you, to your enlightened attention, that American government must look for the source of its power. You dare not, if I may say so, withhold your attention. For if you do, if those young Americans who have the advantage of education, perspective, and self-discipline do not participate to the fullest extent of their abil- ity, America will stumble, and if America stumbles, the world falls. Shady .................. Pineville............... Shady...................0 Peterstown.............13 Yardage came tough in our first game against Peterstown, one of the best teams in the area with 24 returning seniors. Peterstown scored in the second and fourth quarters. They were lucky to catch a still maturing Shady defense early in in the season. Shady's offense gained a total of 140 yards but failed to get closer to a score than Peterstown's 5 yardline. Shut out-defense, defense, defense. Shady's super-tough defense was the key to our first vic- tory of the 1970 season. Our offense was slow getting started, but finally erupted in the third quarter with a 10 yard touch down pass from Alan Rich to Doug Lamb. After a 52 yard drive, Eddie Bonds added another touch- down on a 28 yard run. Our final score emerged when Rich hit Eddie Eller on a pass for the 2 point conversion. Credit must be given to Terry Groves, Larry Griffith, Greg Plummer, and Frank Noel for their outstanding de- fensive play. A N D Baltimore thought they had a tough defense. 122 Rob greets Sophia carrier-hard. Shady............14 Sophia............0 Our offense did a terrific job in the third outing, while our defense held Sophia scoreless; the second shut out in a row. The first score came in the third third quarter on a five yard pass from quarter back Allen Rich to Eddie Eller. Frankie Noel ran for the two extra points. Our second touchdown came on a twelve yard sprint by Roger Danberry. We talked it over at half time and came on strong to win. Shady.................7 Pocahontas...........12 The long trip to Pocahontas County proved unsuccessful as the Shady Tigers returned home after a 12-7 loss. Our offense gained 174 yards rushing and 97 yards passing. A screen pass in the third quarter, recepted by Frankie Noel, Doug tries hard, gained 46 yards and our only touchdown. Jim Wills kicked the point after and the Tigers led 7-6. But the Pocahontas team came back with the winning touch- down. 123 Shady Stoco. 18 14 Bust ’em, dudes. It's too late now. Shady’s offense finally hit a peak in the second half of play in the game against Stoco. Stoco took a quick advantage in the game, but not for long. Sparked by the running of Eddie Bonds Shady came alive for two sustained drives in the third period. Both ended in touchdown runs by Bonds. Alan Rich put the game on ice late in the fourth quarter after another long drive. The tigers record now stands at three wins and two losses. Stand bys look on at Stoco. Shady.......................44 Trap Hill....................8 Our Tigers rolled over Trap Hill with little difficulty in our fifth game of the season. Shady had perhaps its top of- fensive game of the season as six differ- ent players scored in every quarter for a total of 44 points. Trap Hill's only score came against our Junior Varsity Team late in the third quarter. It was truly an outstanding game for both the offense and defense. Larry Griffith, Greg Plummer, Keith Griffith, Danny Wood, and Butch Lilly must be given credit for their outstanding play on the offensive line. Eller in the spotlight. 124 Shady . Mullens 33 .0 Coach Thomas’s Tigers fought a defensive battle with the Mullens Rebels in the first quarter of our Homecoming Game. Eddie Eller was the first to cross the goal line as he snared a pass from Alan Rich. While the Tiger defense maintained control of the Rebel's offensive attack our offense had little difficulty in crossing the goal line as Noel scored three times and Bonds once. The victory not only increased Shady’s chances of winning the Coal- field Conference championship, but was also a terrific prelude to a great Homecoming Dance. Pain and agony. Shady . Hinton 6 8 Shady Collins .0 21 The game at Hinton proved to be a losing cause as our team was able to score only 6 points. Yet our offense gained nearly 350 yards. Of course, we lost a few yards on incurred by both the offensive and defensive teams. It just seemed to be Hinton's night for the breaks, so what can be said? Preparing for the Marsh Fork game. Shady's Tigers suffered their second straight defeat at the hands of a power- ful Collins team. Our defense held Oak Hill to 7 points in the first half while our offense couldn't quite get started. The second half was almost an instant relay of the first except Oak Hill scored twice. All of our players made a good showing against a strong Collins team. Rut Rhoo! Shady..........................8 Marsh Fork.....................6 The Tigers, rebounding from a two game losing sid, defeated the Marsh Fork Bulldogs, to win the Raleigh County League Champainship. The Tigers led by the hard running of fullback, Eddie Bonds. Our one touchdown was in the first period. The score came when Frankie Noel, plunged over from the one foot mark. The conversion which proved to be the deciding margin on the contest, was added by Bonds. This game ended our first winning sea- son since 1965, the last time we won the Raleigh County Championship.
