Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1969 volume:

I 2 DEDICATED TO COACH FRANK RAKES We the graduating class of 1968-69 would like to express our gratitude to Coach Frank Rakes, our teacher, friend, and class sponsor, who joined the teaching staff in 1966. We espe- cially appreciated your help in planning the 1968 Junior-Senior Prom. Even though small in stature, your guiding influence has been large. For your unselfish and loyal service, for your personal interest in students, for your friendliness inside and outside the classroom, and for the great wrestling teams you have given us, we dedicate this book to you. 4 IN MEMORY We, the Senior Class of 1968 wish to memorialize JEFFREY LYNN ALLEN in this edition of the Spring. Jeff, who was our classmate and friend, was killed in an automobile accident on July 24th, before he had actually had an opportunity to carve a future for himself. Although he is not with us, we feel that we have gained in moral strength and stature for having known him. % 6 ALMA MATER In the hills of West Virginia, There's a school I love; May it always bum in memory, Blessed by God above. MILD CONDITIONS...................A-OK CREW READY FOR TAKE-OFF ALL SYSTEMS GO COUNTDOWN 10,9,8,7,6 ... You guessed it. Spaceship Tiger I, powered by that supercool fuel Tigermethane, has just left Cape Shady Spring, soaring out for educational fulfillment, to conquer unknown space, and to land on the moon. Boarding the capsule as chief navigator for the crew of 180 was Richard Green, with Sandy Allen as second in command. Keeping the flight records organized was Kathy Williams, while Sherry Wickline managed the finances. The only VIP aboard was A. W. Jackson. During this space venture- the crew selected Sandy Allen as a representative to the FFA Sweetheart, while Sherry Wickline braved the chilly night to attend the homecoming game. After nine revolutions the Tiger I touched down at home base. Crew members were well satisfied with data obtained, which will be used to make the flight of '67 a more successful one. Soaring through the stars on our second voyage, the 170 man crew in the Tiger n made another attempt at the furtherment of education. Aviator-in-chief Joe Starr and co-aviator J. D. Robinson proved to be very spaceworthy leaders. Recorder for the flight was Linda Bennett with Debbie Lilly handling the funds. After a flight which proved to be very successful and with much knowledge gained about outer space, we returned to Cape Shady Spring. On hand to greet us were members of the Tiger Band accompanied by majorettes, Sherry Wickline, Helena Cox, and Sandy Allen. Also greeting us were Elizabeth Burroughs, attendant to FFA Sweetheart, and Miss Tiger attendant, Veronica Plumley, and a most rousing welcome was given us by the cheering squad, Anna Epperly and Roseanna Wiseman. The astronaut squadron on the Tiger III, headed by Sandra Allen, Linda Taylor, Anna Epperly, and John Goldie, again moved to a third venture into space. As a diversion from our responsibilities, we decided to present a play for our crew members. The Student Spaceship Playhouse was made ready for the presentation of Finders Creepers. ” Seated with our crew was Brenda Wilhelm, attendant to FFA Sweetheart, and Miss Tiger representative, Mary Clark. Having been in orbit for almost a school term, we returned to Cape Shady so that Jim Okes and Debbie Worley could attend Know Your State Government Day. After all, we must gather data to establish a democracy on the moon. At the same time Griff Lilly attended Boys State and Drema Lovell attended Girls State to report on material we had secured while in orbit. We also learned that a new material, solar radion, had been discovered that practically assured us of a safe landing on the moon the coming year. While at the Cape, we were entertained by die lavish Junior-Senior Prom, Paris by Night. It seemed to be a very festive time for all crew members. We were also given an invitation to attend the May Festival, which honored four of our lovely crew members, Anna Epperly, Debbie Lilly, Sherry Wickline, and Veronica Plumley. After much discussion about our space findings, we started plans for our fourth and final journey which would assure us of a landing on the moon. 46 Our senior year blast-off was about to take place. Thus began the final step in reaching our ultimate goal. Lift-off time, scheduled for September 1, was delayed so members of the crew could take part in Homecoming festivities. The FFA Sweetheart, Veronica Plumley, and her attendant Barbara Murdock were featured in the parade. We watched the football team, spirited by our cheer- leaders, Anna Epperly, Lynda Carper, Liz Nixon, and Aileen Meadows, tangle in a vigorous battle with the Trap Hill Wildcats. Miss Tiger, Sandra Allen, began her reign when she was crowned by David Gentry, captain of the football squad. Kathy Williams and Denise Eye were senior attendants. The Tiger IV rocket zoomed into space. Hoping desperately to make a safe landing. Captain Howard Burnette assisted by Leslie Hatcher navigated the spaceship on our final journey. Ronnie Mitchem booked the flight records and Charles Massie managed all financial affairs. While on our trip through space, we were able to see all the events taking place at Cape Shady via universal TV. First on the agenda was the Christmas Parade featuring many colorful floats and bands. Our own Tiger Band was led by majorettes Helena Cox, Kathy Williams, Sandy Allen, Jo Ellen Catlett, Brenda Wilhelm, and Sherry Wickline. Also featured in the parade was our lovely Christmas Queen, Debbie Lilly, and her attendants Linda Bennett, Veronica Plumley, Janet Shannon, and Brenda Wilhelm. Wishing we were back to join in the fun, the space crew next viewed the Winter Carnival, sponsored by the band. Funds from this event were to purchase new uniforms. Reigning as Carnival Queen was Miss Linda Bennett, with Lynda Carper and Lenora Meadows as her attendants. Although we enjoyed the winter festivities very much, we were reminded that our academic roles had not ceased when Captain Burnette won the Elks Leadership Contest. Time is moving on and we have seen our mighty basketball team, headed by Sam Anderson and Mike McLaughlin, led to many victories. However, more excitement than usual was evident in our capsule as we watched the victory over the vicious Marsh Fork Bull Dogs. At half time, we were privileged to see Linda Taylor crowned Miss Spring. Other contestants were Erma Erwin, Lynda Carper, Judy Meador, and Sherry Wickline. Another exciting sports event was the regional wrestling tourna- ment. Here the Grapplers took second place honors while Richard Maxey moves into state competition. And what could be more exciting than to see the Tiger Band in those sharp new uniforms! We have just learned from our captain that the spaceship is now situated for a soft landing. Al- though there is much excitement among the crew, all have been informed to man their stations im- mediately. We are now pioneers on the moon. Hard work and ambition have paved the way to our goal, but now we are faced with the task of establishing a democratic atmosphere for our people. Nearing the end of our journey and having accomplished many feats, our crew will now return to Cape Shady. Many festivities are awaiting our return, the first being Reserve Two for Murder , the annual Senior play. Next will be the coronation of the May Queen. Vying for this title will be six lovely crew members, June Cooper, Marleen Cooper, Libby Griffith, Drema Lovell, Aileen Meadows, and Kathy Williams. Although the May Festival will be very exciting, we anticipate the prom to be the most festive occasion of all. The final awards for our educational fulfillment will be presented on the night of June 12. At that time we will receive certificates for the progress we have made. We will then be classed as Old Grads. Each member of the crew will pursue his own journey as a pioneer in a new and different world. It is our hope that he will find happiness and success in whatever field he may choose. May God add his blessings upon the Class of '69. 47 SENIOR CLASS WILLS I.
