Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1962 volume:

orewor What .is more pleasant than a memory? There comes a time in the life of every man--a time when he feels the real richness of what he is and begins to recognize the dignity in simplicity--when he likes to pause a while and relive in thought with an air of pride and satisfaction those years he spent in preparation for what he has become. This book will serve to recall to you the trials, toils, and friendships that helped to make you what you are--it is for memory's sake alone that this record is compiled. May it af- ford a channel for your thoughts when, in future years, you chance to recall the story of your high school days. 2 —PHYLLIS MOYE I am not loved by all, but by most; Many of you understand my worth, while a few ignore me. You absorb the knowledge I present; Step by step, you ascend the stairways to a fuller, brighter future. You experience happiness, yet also griefs here; These are but the characteristics of high school life. You cannot think of me without bringing to mind Your friends and the faculty, who have given their all to your benefit. As I watch you, so studious yet so jovial, passing through my overflowing veins, I want to tap you on the shoulder and say, Thank you, dear student, for your love. For the joy your laughter brings to me, For your diligence in learning. Only you can bring this happiness to me; for I am YOUR school--I AM SHADY SPRING HIGH. T 1OTTTV imiHlUi SHADY SPRING HIGH SCHOOL Immmrrn tuiniasr' I AM YOUR SCHOOL 1 am not a shell; Concealed within this huge, crude structure Are feelings, hopes, and fears. Radiated from a generous heart to you Are love, courage, and hope for the future. I have a purpose; My ringing bells beckon you to Classrooms, clubs, ballgames and assemblies. 1 lead you to many new adventures and emotions New friendships, loyalties, and a growing faith in the future are yours. e dica As we approach graduation from our beloved Shady Spring High School, we wish to express our gratitude and love to all who have made these years possible--our parents, school faculty, class- mates, and community. To them we dedicate this yearbook. We are the recipients of their dreams, their sacrifices, and their guidance through all the years gone by. Their efforts have made us realize that our greatest need is to learn and to pass on that learning to our fellowmen. They have given us faith, hope, courage, and knowledge that have enabled us to accomplish a part of that need. We will cherish their memory and earnestly strive toward nobler heights for our community and our country so that the future may be bright and full of promise for the youth who follow us. 4 A. W. Jackson, Principal To our departing seniors I bid fond farewell. I hope that the quality of education taught here at Shady Spring High School has helped to better prepare you to live and work in our present com- plex society. To the underclassmen who are striving to reach another rung in the ladder of life, take heart. You still have the opportunity to profit by others' mistakes, so let us all go forward with plenty of vigor and intelligence--ever striving to do the best with the faculties at our command A. W. We hear the voices echoing--they seem to be saying: FRESHMAN CLASS When we entered the huge halls of the big school, we all were shaking inside, but we tried our best not to let it show. We were anxious to begin. We started off by electing class officers for the year 1957-58. The four were: President--Tommy Peters, Vice-President--Robert Pack, Secretary--Mary Ellen Richmond, and Treasurer--Benny Pigg. Soon, we were getting accustomed to the routine of high school and liked it very much. Louise Richmond, Lois Lynch, Linda Cole, and Lou Ann Jolly were chosen Freshmen cheerleaders later in the year. Mary Epling was chosen as color guard for the band. We thought we were represented by a lovely group of girls. The year was drawing near the end, but one more event was to be held--the May Festival. A lovely senior girl was chosen queen; but our two representatives, Louise Richmond and Mary Richmond, were just as lovely as she. At the end of this school year, we were ready to take a vacation and to begin plans for the next year. The end of this year is nigh But our joy and spirits fly To be Sophomore is a must And no one can say, Dumb Freshmen to us. SOPHOMORE CLASS The new year had begun, and we were anxious to get started. We plunged right in and elected class officers. The four this year were: Tommy Peters--President, Mary Richmond--Vice-President, Doris Lilly--Secretary, and Tommy Scott--Treasurer. Patricia Pittman was selected to serve as majorette for the coming year, while Mary Epling was once again color guard. During the basketball season, Barbara Lilly, Kora Keaton, and Patty Ward were chosen as twirlers in the band. The May Festival was approaching us, and we were to elect three girls to be attendants to the queen. The lucky three were Louise Richmond, Mary Ellen Richmond, and Doris Ann Lilly. Now we really felt that we compared to the seniors, because next year we would be one step closer. Yes, we were going to be Juniors, and I guess all that ran through our minds was that we now had two down and two to go. As Sophomores of Shady High We praised our school with each yell and cry For our good school we gave many cheers, And wished it success in the coming years. JUNIOR CLASS On September 2, 1960, we thundered toward the building with great pride and happiness. This year was to be a big one for us because of the Prom and the Junior Play. As usual, we elected class officers; and they were Robert Bailey--President, Bill Cook--Vice-President, Irma Sweeney--Secretary, and Doris Lilly--Treasurer. Our band was headed by all Juniors, except two. The drum majorette was Kora Keaton, and the co- captain was Patty Ward; the majorettes were Nancy Carte, Judy Carter, Connie Kennemur, Barbara Lilly, and Lana Harvey. The color guards were Mary Epling and Carmen Salgado. Yes, we were proud of them. 14 ECHOING We considered ourselves actors and actresses when we tried our luck with the class play, Headed for Eden. Benny James and Phyllis Moye went to Know Your State Government Day convention to represent Shady Spring High School. Lana Harvey, Robert Bailey, and Benny James attended Girls’ and Boys' State. We thought we had a very pretty representative when Doris Lilly won the title of being an attendant to Miss Tiger. Shortly afterward, we chose May Queen attendants and they were Louise Richmond, Mary Richmond, Doris Lilly, and Irma Sweeney. We decorated for the Junior-Senior Prom to honor the seniors. Our theme was Under the Magnolias. The gym was beautiful, and everyone had a wonderful time. With happy good-byes, we parted once again. Juniors of '60 we were proud to be, We loved being Juniors as you can see. Being Seniors next year, we won't regret But our Junior year we shall never forget. SENIOR CLASS The time had finally come when we were Seniors; and after three years of fun and hard work, we could now have the Senior privileges we had waited for. We began the year with the election of our class officers. The big and final four were Bill Cook--President, Robert Bailey--Vice-President, Connie Kennemur--Secretary, and Nelson Cook—Treasurer. Our football captains were Bill Cook and Bill Cochran, and the cheerleading squad was headed by Louise Richmond. Now it was our turn to produce the homecoming queen. Lovely Louise Richmond was Miss Tiger, and her pretty attendant was Mary Epling. We all were proud when Robert Scott won first place in showmanship at the state F.F.A. and 4-H Baby Beef Show and Sale. Petite Carmen Salgado was presented a bouquet of roses at a dance sponsored by the Pep Club when she was crowned Snow Queen. A very vivacious senior girl, Patty Brown, was chosen as Miss Valentine of 1962. Robert Bailey was our Valedictorian, and our Salutatorian was Phyllis Moye. The Co-Honorarians were Louis Quesenberry and Lana Harvey. Unbelievable, yet true, we were now ready to take our stand on the stage and give our last farewell to the school, teachers, and fun at Shady High. With heavy hearts and misty eyes, we departed, leaving the way clear for you, the underclassmen, to work your way to fill the vacancy that we left. We regret the close of this year, And often wish it were not so near; For out in the world we soon shall be; The pleasures and hardships of life we shall see We have found joy and happiness here; We wish good luck to those next year. Though the end of our high school days is nigh, We shall never forget Shady High! How true are these words written by Omar Khayyam. How well they express the feeling which swells up within us as we think of the years we spent at Shady Spring High School. These years are gone now. We can do nothing to change what has passed. Oh, how often we have wished that we could relive our past either to correct some blunder which has left an indelible mark on our memory or to recapture and this time fully appreciate those many happy hours which we let so carelessly slip by, but which have now become cherished memories. We can do very little to rectify the mistakes of past years, but we can relive, at least in memory, the happy days of the past. But our memories are so short. Names are soon forgotten; and, after a time, faces slip into the dusk of oblivion so that soon all we have is a vague recollection of the events which we thought we could never forget. Perhaps this is why yearbooks came into being --to help us reminisce. This year- book may not mean much to you when you first see it. Even after all your friends have written in it, it may still be just a picture book. But in years to come we believe you will value it and turn to it more and more. Then it will no longer be just a book; it will be your treasure chest, and hidden away under its cover will lie the happiest days of your life -- your high school days. 102 ADVERTISING i The Spring Boosters Mr. Mrs. Chester R.
