As we leave, the fond memories of our principal, teachers, and many friendships will always be uppermost in our minds. So we challenge you, the under- classmen, to hold high the torch of learning and of truth to the honor of our Alma Mater, Shady Spring High School. May your high school years be as rewarding and fruitful as ours. THE SENIOR CLASS, I960. Sbedi tea Mr. William Fourney We, the senior class of Shady Spring High School wish to dedicate the I960 edition of THE SPRING to Mr. Fourney our beloved custodian. Mr. Fourney in the five years he has been custodian of our school has given us much help and encouragement. Not only has he kept the school warm and clean, but through him we have seen an example of a happy, friendly, and very helpful man. Mr. Fourney always has a smile, a joke, and a good laugh for everyone and is always ready to lend a helping hand to any project in the school. Giving change at noon, ordering flowers for school affairs, and taking sick students home are just a few of the extra little jobs that he does for us. All the extra things Mr. Fourney does for our school, he does because he is one who does not always put self first. In many ways he is a shining example for all of us. After this year, Mr. Fourney will no longer be with us, but will be retired. His services to our school are greatly appreciated just as they will be greatly missed when he is no longer here. It is our hope that this dedication will amply show our appreciation to Mr. William Fourney, custodian of Shady Spring High School Page 5 A MESSAGE Since the renewal of our high school annual THE SPRING” four years ago, it has been my privilege to write a mes- sage to you each year. To the seniors I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations for achieving a goal that sometimes might have looked unattainable. You have reached the point where adulthood really begins. To those of you who go to college re- member that only by hard work and study will you derive the full value of your education. To the others let me say the same. Oilligence and faithful appli- cation to your work will be rewarded by advancement in your position. You can- not achieve success unless you put forth effort. To the underclassmen my message is brief. The level of achievement which you attain will be entirely up to you. Make that level a high one. To each and every one of you many thanks for mak- ing Shady Spring High School one of the better schools in West Virginia. JOHN W. SAUNDERS. Mrs. Lois Linkous is our school secretary. Mrs. Linkous is a 1957 graduate of Shady Spring High and has attended Beckley Col- lege. She is married to Michael Linkous and resides at Shady Spring. Sck oo( Secret ary Page 8 Mr. John W. Frankie Rakes. Joan Campbell. Carl Pierson Senior September, 1956. Well, old S. S. H. S., you had you had better hold tight, here come 185 freshmen. Teachers, you had really better hold tight because we’ll be here for four years. CLASS HISTORY Our freshmen year was wild. Of course, we didn’t quite know the score but we soon caught on, after a few lectures from Mr. Saunders. We were the babies of Shady High and don’t think the seniors let us forget it. How we longed to get just one chance at at the lawn and a few of us tried it but we didn’t get very far until we were confronted by one of those monstrous seniors. But we weren’t left out completely. Our class was led by Sandra Sanderson Joe Pierson, Mary Etta Pettry, and Diane Rich- mond as our officers. We were also represented on the May Court by Jo Ann Cochran and Becky Jett. Lynn Hart represented us on the student coun- cil. We weren’t forgotten when cheerleaders were chosen either. Zora Lilly, Jo Ann Cochran, Helen Smith, and Mary Lou Lilly were chosen as fresh- men Cheerleaders. To the relief of our teachers this year was coming to an end and vacation tim? was very near and very welcome. Sophomore Move over juniors, seniors, and faculty, here we come, all 175 of us and at last we’re upper classmen. This was our attitude because we finally have someone under us. We struggled through this year with Mr. Lynn's and Mr. Gross’s frogs, worms, and grasshoppers in biology class. We were once more represented on the May Court, this time, by Mary Jo Lilly, Martha McComas and Zora Lilly. Kitty Bowling was chosen to serve as an attendant to “Miss Tiger” on the Homecoming Court. We were very proud of two of our class members, Mary Lou Lilly and Zora Lilly, who represented us on the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. We found that at the closing of this year our school days (for most of us) were 'ust about half over, so S. S. H. S., you’d better enioy us while you can. Juniors Well, here we are again. Although our number has decreased slightly, you won’t be able to forget that there are still 170 of us here. We chose Zora Lilly, Nora Richmond, Kay Anderson, and Dickie Palmer to lead us through this third and great year. Hard was the work and many were the hours that went on the preparation of the prom which we presented to the senior class. “Evening in Paris” was our theme. As we danced to the dreamy music of Jan Campbell, we knew our woork was well worth while. Zora Lilly, Bobbie Holley, Kitty Bowl- ing. and Glenna Hall, made our place on the May Court complete. But all of our time wasn’t filled entirely by social life. Helen Smith was busy work- ing on her oratorical speech and her deliverance which brought her the honor of first place. Helen was busy again but this time preparing for her trip to Charleston where she and John Campbell were our representatives for “Know Your State Government Day”. We were very proud of Joe Rylant and Dickie Palmer when they were chosen as co-captains for our 1959-60 football team; and Lynn Hart was chosen to lead our band as drum majorette. We may not be Hollywood professionals but we thought our Junior Class Play was pretty good and we sure had fun working on it. As May rolled around and school was nearing a close, we were alb quite busy preparing for those long- dreaded and what seemed ill-fated exams. School was out but that didn’t end the activities for many of us as Helen Smith and Howard Morrison made ready to go to Girls’ State and Boys’ State. It seemed James Robert Bragg couldn’t get enough school in one school year so he went to the University of Oklahoma during the summer. That certainly was an honor, James Robert. But Richard Lilly wasn’t to be outdone. He also did some travel- ing. He went to Jackson’s Mill for a state F.F.A. convention. Seniors September, 1959. We found ourselves back at Shady High for the last time. And though we may have felt a little sad, it was soon forgotten through the excitement of finally reaching the top class and being the ones to hold those long-awa'ted senior privileges. We once more chose our class officers; Kitty Bowling, Zora Lilly, Richard Lilly, and Jo Ann Cochran. Richard Lilly must not have had sufficient vacation because soon after school started, he was off again, this time, to Kansas City, to a national F.F.A. convention. We didn’t realize our dramatic talents until we gave the Senior Assembly, many still don’t realize but t v'.as fun anyway. Bobbie Hollev Jeanette Burress, Phyllis Williams, attendants, and Zora Lilly, queen, made our Homecoming festivities com- plete. Alter Christmas Vacation, the halls were full of excitement with the election of the May Queen and her attenndants. This was the year that a girl was to be chosen queen from our class; and vieing for this title was Bobbie Holley, Kitty Bowling, Jo Ann Cochran, Kay Anderson, Zora Lilly, and Becky Jett. The juniors gave us our prom this year. As graduation was becoming a reality and we selected our invitations and measured for our caps and gowns, we began to realize that our high school days were just about over and many tears were shed but we also realized that we could not stop the hands of time. Everything has to move forward and these years have just completed a single, but very important ripple in the forever moving stream of life.
