A Our staff has sought diligently to make this ■( book a storehouse to which you might go in later l years and find many priceless treasures. In the later years of your life, when you have reached your goal, we earnestly hope that you will turn to this storehouse, and as you reminisce over these happy golden memories, you will give a silent word of thanks for those high school years which were stepping stones of a firm foundation, which made of you a better person and started you on the road toward your own bright and shining star. THE STAFF It is t he privilege of youth to look to others for guidance; to know and to use the one great reservoir of strength that seems to be as bottomless as it is abounding, --Our Parents. They have been the inspiration and guiding light that has given us courage throughout our four years spent in Shady Spring High School. Armed with their devotion, their wise guidance gained through years of experience, and our own fresh outlook on life, it is with ambition and hope that we set out into the world, confident of our selves, and certain of their great and abiding faith in our ability to succeed. Remembering their constant aid, often out of great sacrifice, knowing full well their hopeful expectations that we may live a fuller life than their own, and ever mindful of their trust in us, it is with love and understanding that this volume of THE SPRING is dedicated to Our Pa rents who have dedicated their lives to the task of showing us the only true way to seek and find the better life. This is our tribute to them. NCIIL7 MR. JOHN W. SAUNDERS Principal Mrs. Woodrow Bonds Home Economics Mrs. Walter Cantabery Commerce Mrs. Clay S. Band Director: Miss Joan King GLEE CLUB Sponsor: Miss Joan King CAMERA CLUB Sponsor: Mr. Jack Richmond SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Like the Roman God, Janus, we the senior Class of 1957, look both into the Past and toward the Future. We cannot foresee what the future holds; we can only grope our way into it, but the past is a living memory. As we leave the friendly, sheltering halls of S.S.H.S. we look back over the four happy years spent here, and feel assured that we are prepared for the future. When first we looked upon this cold and massive building in September 1953, we were a very frightened group, 206 strong, but gradually we became accustomed to our fellow classmates, and became an active part with the election of our class officers. We chose Connie Clark, Jane Lusk, Betty Hopkins and Frances Grabowski. Charlotte Grimet represented us on the Student Council. This year our boys enthuiastically went out for sports, and brought our Freshman basketball team up to runner’s-up in the i County. Others joined the many clubs and band. In May, our May Queen was crowned, and Connie Clark and Jenny Smith were se- lected to reign as freshman attendants. The next year, when we came back for our second year at S.S.H.S., we were happy instead of scared; and right away we got into the swing of things by electing Connie Clark to lead us with Sammy Gross and Larry Wood as her helpers . Connie Clark and Bill Fourney were on the Student Council which later sent Connie to Jackson’s Mill. With the coming of spring, Connie Clark and Anna Nixon were chosen as Sophomore attendants to the May Queen. As J uniors in nineteen hundred and fifty- five, our class was diminishing in number, but growing in spirit. This year we chose as class officers: John Peters .Johnny Rakes , Charlotte Grimet and Mac Ray Lilly. The Junior Student Council members were Jane Lusk, Connie Clark, and Anna Nixon. Our boys went all out for sports and took great pride in helping to win the runner-up trophy in the class nineteen A basketball tourna- ment . April brought the Junior play, “Be Happy Go Wacky”, under the supervision of Mrs.Clay S.Crouse. On the May Court this year was Jane Lusk, Betty Hopkins, Connie Clark, and Anna Nixon. Next came the biggest event of the year with the Juniors honoring the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Prom. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Our Senior year found 113 of us left, feeling very important in our new role of Seniors. Along with the responsibility of leading the other classes, came the thrill of class rings and senior privileges . We chose the following to 1 e a d us in our last year at Shady: Sammy Gross, Terry Meadows, Charlotte Grimet and Phyllis Loar . We were honored in having the privilege of publishing an annual with Phyllis Loar and Shirley Wood as Editor and Associate Editor. Betty Hopkins was chosen Homecoming Queen with Jane Lusk and Connie Clark as her attend- ants . We’ll always remember the Friday night we won the Raleigh County League Football Championship--the first time in 7 years. Our team went undefeated for the first time in the history of Shady. We have a very promising Basketball Team also. As this book goes to press we are undefeated, with a six-nothing record. 4 Next came the “ Adorable Imp” directed by Mrs. Jack Hutchens , which brought out a crowd of about 500 people, the largest crowd ever to attend a senior play. For the May Court our class chose Frances Peters, Connie Clark, Anna Nixon, Sandra Burnette, Jane Lusk and Betty Hop- kins . With the Spring came the thrill of order- ing our graduation announcements, and o caps and gowns. Finally, now on May 26, graduation looms on the horizon and we feel well prepared to meet what lies ahead. Through all the future years, as we look back over our school days, we will always remember and be loyal to you --Gold and Blue!
