Side Academy 423 ox Chapel Rd. Pittsburgh, PA 15238 SCI-IE DU LE This year was a time of transition for many students at Shady Side. The schedule of attending classes, sports, and activities was complete- ly re-arranged, so the old-timers to the system were as perplexed as the newly-arrived freshmen when school resumed in the fall. When spring came about, those students departing from SSA reflected upon the idea that each new day would bring an entirely different sched- ule, just as events that would shape the paths of their lives could never be forseen. The departing students exemplified the hope that Shady Side's contributions to their lives would always remain to guide them in a continually growing manner. J v .4 wr, 8:30 to 2:50 Despite rumors to the contrary, Shady Side students come to school mainly to study, and since the student body is so varied, the classes at Shady Side are also var- ied. Whether it is English with Mrs. Rumble, computers with Dr. Su- tula, or physics with Mr. Reiland, everyone follows roughly the same schedule. The Upperformers take a different English every term to break the monotony, while fresh- men are assigned to study halls to Csupposedlyl study. Yet all the stu- dents have one thing in common: after looking back at all the tests and homework that they have had, they often wonder just how they have survived. 7 t D Mi . 19 aging Q .ww M. 4 'W mm gmfil' gm-f., E 'is Q lf 'E H ' ff' 3 'E , Q , , if, 'R' ,- C, V I A 5 iff Q X ' QV I N ' -L ' 5 . 1 V 4 1 ,, N KW, ,V nf ., J xv, Q V ,Q ' 'f'.f'1 'aww ' f f ,f A , , 1 ' I M y i ' A A A , ,, M ' ff mr xi' . f 4 V s JW ' , -if J 'W Free Time 8: 0ther Times Although not included in the daily schedule as a required school appointment , free-time plays an important role in every Shady Side student's day. Student hang-outs include Rowe Com- mon, the Pit , and The Window for the socially-oriented, the S.C. Lounge, the Resource Center, and the library for the more studious. Students can be found doing a vari- ety of free-time activities, from ul- timate frisbee on the Quad to a quiet game of chess in the library, from listening to music in Morewood basement to a wild snowball fight in front of Memorial Hall. But no matter what the activ- ity, no matter where it is done, free- time allows the students to relax and socialize while providing a lit- tle Hescapel' from the hectic sched- ule of classes. But no matter what the sport, whether soccer, football, tennis, field hock- ey, or cross country, there is always a mad dash by the athletes to the pop machine after another com- pleted day at Shady Side. 11, , ' ' v-V4 A , wffj' .,- It 15 Thank God It's Over For most students at Shady Side, the hectic schedule of classes ends at around three o'clock, but the day itself is far from over. Clubs, sports, play practice - they all add fun and interest to an already fun- filled day. Yet most day students manage to get home in time for a warm, nourishing dinner, while boarders look forward to . . . well, Friday afternoon. 16 1 Sewer , September FALL September September September I October I I Ootober I I Gotober I Gotober I November I November November - K X . The year began on a tra- ditional note with Orientation Day for new students, Freshman Outing Day, and Senior Mountain Day Cwhich turned out to be the perfect solution to the Shady Side blahsl. Homecoming gave students, facul- ty, and alumni the opportunity to mingle and cheer the Indians on to victory. A very unique addition to the Gargoyle repertoire was the one-woman play, The Belle of Amherst, with Margi Wald in the title role. Throughout the fall, stu- dents were given numerous occa- sions to dress up for dress down as the case may bel due to the immense popularity of Viola- tion Days and Halloween Costume Day. Field Day Promising to be a beautiful and sunny October Monday, the sen- iors headed for the mountains for the annual Senior Mountain Day. This year, Senior Mountain Day was held at Laurel Highlands State Park in Somerset where the foliage was in full splendor. When the sen- iors arrived, they set out to explore by jumping, or in some cases fall- ing, into the creek and following seemingly endless trails into the dark depths of the forests. Break- ing for lunch, the seniors warmed up with hot chocolate and chicken noodle soup. The itinerary after lunch called for a group hike led by senior advisor Mr. Robert Reiland. However, some opted for playing football, ultimate frisbee, or ex- ploring. Soon it was time to return back to SSA. On the bus home, the exhausted passengers were either sleeping or exchanging stories about the events of the day. 23 y J x ' 1 .a, lem :sg 11: il nth 4 -..,. .....,.-Q, v - . .47 ,N 4 U -lr-------------...... , QU, L cz 1' if A' 4. fir, z.. Perhaps it was the pleasant weather or the tre- mendous enthusiasm shown by the Shady Side fans that allowed the Indians to take on University School and Winchester-Thurston with such vigor and expertise. The entire occasion was breath-taking, from the athletic events to the class and dormitory float building pro- jects. The additional effort put forth by the Sophomore class, the class of 1984, did not go unobserved as they received first prize in the prestigious float building contest. However, all Shady Side is to be commended for their rigorous en- deavor which made the 1981 Homecoming such a memorable occasion. 25 l 4+ -1 Q ,, , .- Wm ad' TV, we 3-ini -4' ' Q Q-NW -Q' 60 xl ..-,rw 251' 'il if K :wi Sr .22 -.. ,ft P . v- .M Ll- , n.. Well, he certainly has the legs - and the guts. As a matter of fact, almost everyone at Shady Side seemed willing to show a little of their dar- ing and originality on Halloween Costume Day. The costumes ranged from an all-girl Cross Coun- try team to a roller-skating skier, and everything in between. But this craziness didn't last just until Halloween, however. Fall at Shady Side also brought an unusual hat day as well as several of those ever- reliable violation days to add to the fun. 27 SSAssemblies Diverse assemblies entertained and informed students this fall. On the intellectual side, Shady Side had the privilege of having a distin- guished educator and political fig- ure to speak to the student body on racial discrimination. Culturally, Shady Side got a first hand glimpse at the art of dance as demonstrated by Point Park College's American Dance Ensemble. All the dancers were extremely gifted and beauti- ful to watch. The other major all- school assembly dealt with Shady Side exclusively and also was an annual tradition: the fall athletics awards. This assembly proved to be a fun-filled hour of presentations by comedians Mr. George Berry and Mr. Bob Grandizio, and it al- lowed the many outstanding stu- dent athletes to be recognized for their talents. 28 An Evening With Emily Margi Wald captivated Shady Side audiences with a spectacular one-woman performance of The Belle of Amherst. After many months of long, tedious rehearsals, the play culminated in two even- ings in early December. The Belle of Amherst was part of an Inde- pendent Study project in which Mr. William Tadler served as Mar- gi's advisor. This performance was truly one of the highlights of the entire year. 29 DDYK1 . Jl. ,Z .,.,.Q-.., if -if ia. 'K- ixfwfg How to make Passes And Score Points The football team, faced with stiff competition, provided much excitement in compiling a 5-4 re- cord. Led by Co-captains Frank Dickson and Marvin Carolina, the Indians finished second in the IPSL. The team opened the season with a disappointing loss at Leech- burg, 23-O. They snapped back by winning the next three games with a 27-7 win over Hampton as the highlight. The Indians then suf- fered a letdown and three straight losses. One of the defeats came against a tough University School team on Homecoming. After a scoreless first half, Shady Side could not hold on and lost 30-6 to the eventual league champions. The team finished the season by winning the last two games, includ- ing a 14-O victory over Kiski. The 1982 football team will surely miss the tough senior line and hard-run- ning backs, as well as the coaching of Mr. David Buran. Next year's Tri-Captains Gregg Hartung, Andy Katz, and Chuck Scales will lead the way with plenty of experience. The entire team thanks Coaches Grandizio, Buran, McCabe, and Diehl for their time and effort. Stickin' To It Although the record did not show it, the 1981 field hockey sea- son was one of the great value. The return of only two seniors left a very young and inexperienced team to overcome the many hardships and struggles of girls' athletics. Co- Captains Sarah Knutson and Ann Kasunich not only added spirit for a close-knit team, but also added encouragement to continue despite some low spots. Because of such an inexperi- enced team, Coach Diane Mooney placed an emphasis on teamwork rather than skill. This tactic seemed to pay off in the long run. Although only two wins were cred- ited to the season, the young team played with more teamwork than ever seen before. Perhaps it was not a winning season, but it was an en- joyable one in which each team member learned from experience. The Junior Varsity enjoyed an impressive season for the second consecutive year. A record of four wins and two losses as well as three ties enabled the team to take the ISGAL Championship. Congratu- lations JV!! 34 'J-... P Varsity Field Hockey Qfacing page topl Back Row: S. The team started off with a bang when they won the North Al- legheny tournament with surpris- ing victories over North Allegheny and defending WPIAL champions Upper St. Clair. The team went on to win 13 games and tie 4 times be- fore losing their last game at the hands of a strong Kiski team. The team tied for second place along with WRA in the IPSL, behind University School. The offense was led by Co-Captain Elect David Todd, who was the high scorer with 19 goals and tied the school record of 36 total goals. Other strong play- ers on the offense line were David Bowser with seven goals and Alex Howson with five assists over the season. The strong midfield was led by Co-Captain Marty Calihan with Jeff Spear and Whit Braham who had five goals. The defense was an- chored by Co-Captain Elect Craig Stiffler along with the team Most Improved Player Tom Gill, Jamie Hogan, and David Eddy who re- placed the injured Jon Slesinger. One key reason for the team's suc- cess was goalie Tom Lazaroff, the team MVP. His 12 shut-outs this year, including a string of eight in a row, gave him a career total of 20 and a new school record. Next year's team has a lot to look for- ward to with four returning juniors and sophomores Dan Kennedy and Sean Casey. Varsity Soccer Back Row: Coach Fleishman, S. Casey, D. Kennedy, D. Eddy, J. A1- though winter sports are generally indoor sports, the Running and Weightlifting group generally spent more time outdoors. Three days a week, the group braved the elements, as unpredictable as they may have been, to run on campus circuits or to go for an off-campus run on the roads. Running and Weightlifting is unique in that it allows young men and women to participate in the same program. Weightlifters: First Row: J. Linn, M. Jenkins, A. Dunmire, D. Buran, G. Aznavor- ian, G. Plagued by injuries and ravaged by over- teams from larger powering schools, the team finished with a rather depressing record of 3-6. Captain Doug Morrison and Sen- iors Marty Henry and Chris Allen rallied the team sufficiently for it to take a fourth place in the League Championships, beating Western Reserve and Linsley and coming in close behind US. Under the leader- ship of Co-Captains Jay Katarincic and Mike Cohen, next year's team will have strong hopes of improving on this year's record. Boys' Swimming Back Row: Coach Ross, M. Henry, C. The gymnasts had a pick of four coaches: Head Coach Mrs. Diane Mooney, Mr. Robert Veto, Miss Rebecca Henry, and Miss Carol Baumgartner. The team started with six freshmen and four veter- ans, with Junior Mary Lee Dickson .. A Injuries soon down to five freshmen and three veterans. The foundation evidently came from the freshmen, especially high-scor- ers Cindy Wood and Leslie Lucas. The highlight of the season, the SSA Invitational, placed Shady Side fourth out of eight teams from the area. The 1982-83 Gymnastics Team looks very promising since there will be no gymnasts leaving. How- ever, the team got its act together and came back to Win all the re- maining matches, ending the sea- son with a Winfloss record of 6-5. This may have been due to awe- some letter winners Jim Allan, Martha Gibson, Mark Grosz, Jeff Haus, Janie Joo, Steve Lebovitz, Chris Morter, Lee Parker, Stuart Roth, Troy Tafel, Christine Wichers, and Rob Yee. Then again, it could have been Jim Allan's out- standing leadership or Mark Wil- kins' Calso a letter winner? impres- sive managing. Certainly, much of it was due to the coaches, Mr. John Big Daddy Thorpe and Mr. Sam Hutcheson. The 1982-83 team has a tough season ahead of it, with only four lettermen returning. But this yearis Assistant Manager Chris Brodmerkel and others look promising. Hopefully, the team will hear many inspiring Hot Damn's and We Are Golden s from Mr. Thorpe next year, when Christine Wichers will succeed Jim Allan as captain. Back Row: C. Wichers, S. Kilgore, C. Under the leadership of Head Coach Joe O'Neill, the Club registered a regular season re- cord of 16-4 and placed second in the Western Pennsylvania Inter- scholastic Hockey League playoffs. Some highlights of the season were the two wins over defending AA Champs Allderdice as well as impressive successes over tough Hampton and North Hills. In fact, the team was at one time enjoying a nine game winning streak. Despite the momentum and team spirit provided by these victories, howev- er, the team lost in the finals to Central Catholic, 6-1, after tying in the first game, 3-3. Leading the Indians' attack this year was Center Eric Matheny with 19 goals with the help of linemates Todd Begg and Gregg Ficery. The line of Stu Goodman, Lloyd Fales, and Jay Kranich also provided con- sistent play to compliment the speed and power of Brian Nogrady, Randy Harper, and J.P. Martha. The strong defensive corps was an- chored by Senior Captain Jamie Mallinger and complimented by the other defensemen, J.J. Linn, Steve Albitz, and Ned Spells. Back Row: J. Martha, T. Begg, J. This year's Week of the Arts pro- gram was more outstanding than any other known to students and faculty alike. The first assembly of the spring was a visit by Mr. John Craig, editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who spoke about the challenges and rig- ors of publishing a widely circulat- ed newspaper. Another assembly in mid-April brought Mr. David McCullough, a very distinguished historian and graduate of Shady Side Academy, Whose enlightening speech enabled the student to gain valuable insight into American History. As a Shady Side first, the administration held a mini-Day of Concern in late April to discuss various topics of school policy. The last two assemblies honored those who have excelled either academi- cally or athletically. Prize Day, a Shady Side tradition, was held in early May for those who have been recognized for their proficiency in some field of study. The Athletics Assembly in mid-May honored the athletes at Shady Side and their ef- forts in the spring season. 81 Our Art At It's Best This year's Week of the Arts topped last year's by a mile. For the four days, many different events occured, as each day had its own theme. During the first day, most of the students were let out of classes to enjoy the Afro-american culture. There was a bongo drum exhibition and jazz played by a blues band, backed up by their four year old drummer. The second day was devoted to the Shakespearean culture. The dancing group showed us how the people in the 1600's in England danced. The teachers, along with Margi Wald and Mark Stept, put on their own Shakespearean recita- tion. There were artists there also depicting Shakespearean architec- ture. In the other two days, everyone enjoyed the juggler with his firing torches and the country band to whose music many square danced to. A great variety of exhibits and performances, along with a great sense of enthusiasm among the stu- dents and great weather gave Shady Side its best Week of the Arts, thus far. .1 'E if 82 .Mn 6 ,rn ' s 'W ff ' . an V . l,f', 5 ,.'-A '42 1 'T' 1 .W ' ,, j 1 - ' -Pa .1-r,4'5 ' ., G ,Ad ,' s,..M'+'v- V' 133' ,. f . i.. ffsfliauiu.. wi ,,.vw www ,f..fm,-m-M .--- . .- 1- sd' 0 ' t P- U ' I' , . With many catchy melodies such as The Riviera and talented stu- dents Christine Wichers and Don Gottesman in the lead roles, The Boyfriend was immensely appre- ciated by all who saw it. Roseanne Kaelin, Lisa King, Amy Povich, and Sue Mooney portrayed English girls at school in France, while Chris Morter, Gary Taylor, George Childs, and Alan Ackerman played the girls' prospective boyfriends. Other students involved with prin- cipal roles were Beth Riley, Chris Huygen, Amy Housholder, David Garrett, and Sandy Sauereisen. Coached by Mr. Bob Spanky Kirkpatrick, Wild Bill Endres, and Augie Henry, the Var- sity opened their season by shut- ting out Upper St. Clair, 20 to 0. Unfortunately, luck was not with them against rival Sewickley. The lax-men pulled a second place showing at the Canadian Tourna- ment despite enjoying too much Canadian atmosphere . . . eh! The heavy duty defense of Chub- by Allen, Captain Frank Dickson, Captain David Dickson, and Dan Haas proved themselves to be im- penetrable. Captain Jamie Mal- linger, Jerry Ellis, Greg Rice, and George Brodmerkel, otherwise known as the Varsity Attack, often proved themselves as scoring threats. The macho middies, Jeff Stone, David Eddy, Butch Katz, Steve Hilger, Craig Stiffler, Todd Davis, Gar Prebor, and Kurt Casey amazed the opposition with their awesome skill. Much thanks goes to the lacrosse managers, Lori Cotton, Annabelle Fort, and Kris Davis, and to the supportive parents and fans. Mk, 4? A 4 Varsity Lacrosse Back Row: Manager A. Fort, Manager L. Due to the superb coaching of Mr. Curtis Way and the extremely good talent of a number of players, the SSA Tennis Team has developed into one of the most powerful teams in Western Pennsylvania. For the first five matches of the season, the team de- feated perennial WPIAL powers Fox Chapel and North Hills, losing only to Churchill in a hotly contest- ed match. The team was led by sec- ond year Captain Stuart Goodman who alternated with serious Gregg Ficery in the number one and two positions. Playing at the third sin- gles spot was Junior Trip Oliver, who also had a brief stint in dou- bles play. The first doubles team consisted of Mark Henry and Dan Kennedy, who have developed into one of the best doubles combina- tions in the area. At second doubles was the pair of Chad Wooton and Forrest Patterson. Having had lost three of its starters from last sea- son, the 1982 Tennis Team and Coach Way are to be commended for an outstanding 8-5 record. --4 5 r..,,,,, 7 W.. 3 i l A . 8 W gl X Kiev , 5 . .1 if Above: Senior Players Gregg Ficery, Captain Stuart Goodman 101 W. 1 .. - Clwif W gQ,,,Wm. Each class gave a play, and everyone enjoyed the special events on Halloween and Christ- mas. ln the spring, all the students and their fathers gathered for Fa- ther and Son night, which included dinner and many various activities. But perhaps the biggest event of the year is the departure of Mrs. Ferguson, teacher for 20 years and headmistress for 5. We will miss her very much. In a nation- wide Latin Contest, 24 out of 28 students placed nationally. Mid- dle-schoolers also performed well in this year's French and Algebra contests. Long-time facul- ty members John S. Thorpe, F. Walter Jones, and Richard Gregory were on a sabbatical for parts of the year and were sorely missed. The administrative duties and titles were re-arranged and revised, add- ing to the confusion. However, SSA was pleased and enriched by the addition of new faculty members: Miss Becky Henry of the Social Studies Dept., Miss Rae Ann Sines of the Science Dept., Mrs. Claralyn Goldberg of the English Dept., Mr. Scott McClure of the Language Dept., and Mr. Dave Knapp of the Music Dept. Kwhich has, by the way, increased its faculty by 100 983. Unlike the changes in scheduling, the changes in the fac- ulty were very much appreciated. Oppostie Page: A. Emerson Johnson, Headmasterg F. They were involved in all facets of life here. Each dorm created their own homecoming exhibit and ran stu- dent fair booths. They had a cer- tain way of expressing themselves, whether it be in a leisurely game of football after an outdoor barbeque in the spring or by taking an imme- diate interest in wildlife during their midnight strolls? All in all, the boarders had an enjoyable time at Shady Side this year and added a lot as a unique Academy institu- tion. I , S I 'Q s .f, gi i .fig Q ,gemsi Si ' 928 taxis gm . Morewood The Morewood dorm had a very enjoyable year. It could be seen from Homecoming and Student Fair projects, that the Morewood students were not only active in the boarding community, but also in many other aspects of Shady Side life. President Hillary Krizner led the troups in many successful events, one of which was a sundae stand at the student fair. Even though Ellsworth is sad to see their graduating seniors leave, the girls are looking forward to next year's dorm life. 139 Croft The 1981-82 year at Croft was dif- ferent from the previous years. First of all, the I Love Richard Show was cancelled, Ultimate B died in the jaws of Dulce, and Yeeeeeee slowly became Yeeee, then Yee when the Mandarin Man finally did one late night too many. However, Croft was still the same in many respects as seen in our var- ious activities: Ben Segall's Sunday Night Pizza Party, Marvin's room conversion to the Croft Hotel, mid- night football on the quad, mid- night Ellsworth raids, late night Denny's, B.B., D.H. action, Bruno munch, Thursday night B.C., the Gumby song Are you a Gumby'?', assembly blow-off, President George Aznavorian, and Backs- cammon. Many new Croft person- alities emerged this year: Rand-eye the Barbarian, Wally-balls, Dough- nut, Baby Dave, Stinky pinky, V2 of the lush Brothers, Twinkles, Switch, the Scoop brothers uno- choonv Roone and Brune Qwe're still looking for the girl with the glass bra size 38BJ, Marvin the part-time boarder, and perhaps the most illustrious of them all - West Mifflin Ray and Pubies. The pre- pubescent Pubes, with his diet of salt and Pepsi and Rowe Common parking spot, often found himself the belligerent in the two cherished games - Hill Street Pubes and Starsky and Hutch criminal wres- tling. However, these games were soon terminated when it was dis- covered that he was enjoying it too much. He was also constantly vis- ited by Chester and Charley, those famous army veterans, West Miff- lin Ray was the source of many quotes such as: My dad's stongn, you don't want to see my broth- er , and My thunderbird is a luxu- ry car and can blow away your Cor- vette . Oh yeah, we can't forget the Gumby's perrenial deep throats: The party's over! , That blotch is not chocolate! , and You guys will never steal my food again! fol- lowed by I distinctly smell my ham! 140 STEIHS Simms--Q CQ' . , 5l'.1 l'f1 cf: .U WK' its -- - .-- 'l f7'iEZif.i 5f 730 iw X. fo f' ...N Two new Croft venture were start- ed this year. Croft production films Gumby bites the dust , Span- kyblastv, and The Streets of Puerto Rico . The Croft fry-man physics Racket award was created for the student in Croft currently enrolled in Physics who most re- sembles the Fry man. Along with these new traditions, we saw the demise of many Croft people: Yeeeee, the Dirty, Bindu, John re- member Watergaten Dean, and Johnny Fu, Janie Joo, and the Bindu, too. Thanks to the hard work of our officers Pres. Marv, Vice Pres. Rad, and Sec!Treas. Er- nie, Croft had another memorable year. Morsu! Opposite Page, Middle Photo: Croft: Back Row: B. Katz, E. For nine years, they are able to with- stand the pressures of hard Work, hard play, and no girls. When they reach the Senior School, however, life changes. Work gets harder, play turns to work, and girls turn to play. Yet through it all, lifers man- age to maintain their sanity and well-being while learning and hav- ing fun in the process. Many contests were a aprt of tribe day. Nobody can forget the famous pie eating and root beer chugging contest. Wally, Doc, and Jack pigged out. The chicken fights were big, as well as the tug-of-war. How many eggs made it to the fin- ish line? Gary's did'nt! The three leg race and the wheelbarrow race were very popular among everyone. The mighty Mohawks finally pre- vailed, but everyone enjoyed the cookout afterwards. The Class of 1982 was honored by friends, faculty, parents, and guests on Friday, June the elev- enth. The festivities began on the Rowe Hall Quadrangle at 2 P.M. Ben Segall, president of the Senior Class, opened the Class Day Exer- cises with a warm welcome. The tradition of Class Day was pleas- antly interrupted by an unusual story told by Chris Huygen in lieu of a Class Ode . Class Day closed with the raising of the flag by Sen- iors Garrett Blanchfield and Lisa Washington. At 2:45 P.M., the seniors, clad in the traditional blue and white, marched to McKelvy Field with the musical accompaniment pro- vided by the Fine Arts Brass Quin- tet. The Reverend Robert Heppen- stall offered the Invocation, and Dr. Johnson welcomed the stu- dents and guests. Amy Middleman, valedictorian of the Senior Class, gave a stirring speech on the sub- jects of excellence and competition. Dr. Howard Swearer, president of Brown University, addressed the graduating class with a humorous and unique speech. The members of the Senior Class were then pre- sented with their diplomas, and the graduation ceremony closed with the Senior Cheer. The Class of 1982 will always be remembered for their unique style and accomplish- ments. 219 's 15 EZ, may ji Q Q A 'RN 12 J , P-, .x', ,.'j f g,'lQ-. fs- . 7' :fu 85 'i -ks Ni i l Q 1 1.
