Class of '81 This year at Shady Side was one of new choices and decisions for the junior class. Competition for grades increased, with emphasis on the impending college admissions process. Career choices, also had an important role in the advisory program. Work, however, was not the only thing on the minds of the junior class. Under the outstanding leadership of president, Dan lvlrvos, the class of '81, was a strong contender in the homecoming float building contest. We had a successful dance which benefitted the class treasury and enjoyed a field trip to a Penguin hockey game, along with a raft trip to Ohiopyle. Throughout the year, our class worked hard academically and displayed a sense of togetherness in class activities. We look forward to next year and hope to achieve the goals which we have set for ourselves. 74 ' ,-4' Back: T. Levitt, S. Smith, D. Gilpatrick, B. Tippins, R. Davenport, M. Keigher, G. Many factors contributed to this experience: Being the younger class, different courses, more free time yet a heavier work load, new friends, and arriving home at 6:30 p.m., were but a few. After our class adjusted to these changes everyone had fun, and once we got over our initial shyness many good friendships developed. The Indians compiled a successful 6-I-1 record. The Indians will share the championship this year with Nichols School of Buffalo. The Shady Side Indians were particiularly outstanding due to their leadership, their team unity and of course, their excitement. Co-Captains Mike Noel and Ioe Wagner truly provided sincere leadership for this year's team. They went out of their way to make every player feel like an integral part of the squad. Everyone felt at home in the locker-room, on the field, and off the field. Due to these characteristics, the team gained the respect of the entire Shady Side community. Coach Grandizio regarded this team as his favorite and most respected of his fifteen years of coaching at SSA. Excitement was prevalent throughout the season. The initial game of the season against Linsly Military was I4-I3 by a touchdown pass in the dwindling seconds of the final quarter. Mercersburg Academy also proved to be a worthy opponent, but the Indians chalked up a I4-6 victory. The tough Indians also managed to pull out an exciting I4-14 tie against New Brighton, the number four ranked team in Western Pennsylvania at the time. This upset however led to a Ietdown as the Indians lost 7-O to an obviously inferior Western Reserve team. Nevertheless, the tenacious Indians rallied back to defeat two worthy opponents, University School and Nichols School fthe co-championl. The Indians ended the season with a decisive victory over Kiski tlast year's league championl. veg 'W fl Y .Q rs 3, M71 I' 1 5.3! until wr . These seniors, just as all other graduating players have done, will wish the coaches good luck with next year's team. Ronney Laffey and lim Perry, next year's co-captains, will lead the way. However, the loosing record does not give an accurate indication of how well the squad played throughout the year. The team suffered disappointing losses to such W.P.l.A.L. powers as Fox Chapel, North Hills, North Allegheny, W.P.l.A.L. runner-up, Spring- dale, and W.P.l.A.L. champion Shaler. The squad's highlight of the season was the comeback effort to tie W.P.I.A.L. power, Mt. Lebanon, by a score of 2-2. Offensively, Sam Kintner, john Goldblum, Rich Easler, and Tyler McClay made up the line, an all junior combination. Controlling the center of the field was captain Andy Sayles, as well as seniors Phil Coldblum, and lim Adelsheim. The defense played extremely well throughout the year, and was made up of seniors jamie Katzin, Mike Caplan, Tim lsaly. The goaltend- ing was held by sophomore Ted Weigand, and Tom Lazaroff. With strong support from Cliff Cross, Marty Calihan, and Bruce Masterson coming off the bench, the team had depth which helped it come out of some difficult situations with injuries to starters. With ten returning members of this 1979 squad, the 1980 soccer season promises to give Shady Side a strong contender next year to capture the I.P.S.L. soccer crown. f 97 V if is 43 Q A. In the place of number one good guy, Dave Olds, came co- captains Fritz Schwentker, and Tom Graham, and super sophomores Doug Smack Morrison, and Dar- ren larvis, all of whom shared the number one slot on the team. The competition was tough, and some- times dangerous, but with strong ef- forts by the smack-pack, including josh Mooney, Scotty Lerch, jimmy Irvin, Rick Dubois, Tom Rhodes, Ral- phy Dalphy Demmler, Mike Flash Flood, Ted Sandberg, jamie Lang and jeff Swenson, the S.S.A. pack hung in. Especially commendable was the meteor-like rise of senior George Kreis from twentieth place to third place by the end of the season. T77 103 Golf Before the start of the 1979 golf season, there was a definite feeling among the team that they could go undefeated. From the athletic fields to the dormitory and class float building projects, Shady Side students exemplified their leadership and hard working abilities which enabled the Academy to enjoy one of the finest homecomings in recent history. Rigorous training gave our Indians the edge we needed to defeat Nichols in all areas of competition. Stirred by the extra efforts of the junior class, the class of 1980 got their act together enough to win the prestigious float building contest. Much credit is due to the athletic department and to our own class officers for making this year's Homecoming such a memorable occasion. 106 l x W A---. ., qw Q 1 ' . :,f,1q-M, . -. 1'-..'5-.., ' ,- 'T K A 1-, K5 L 1, W., ' ' -rf., -, 33 ' 2 K ' 4 .,, I K A -' 'Wk fb x f T' . The 1979-80 season consisted of many changes for the girls' swim team. Because of the change to the winter season, many previous letter winners were lost to other sports. However, the reduced team, which lacked experienced divers, performed well under the guidance of their new coach Dale Ross and his assistant lim Davis. The swimmin' women compiled a 2 - 6 record with sizable victories over Breshear and Oliver. The team suffered losses to Fox Chapel, Allderdice, Shaler, Northgate and Hampton fby one pointy. All the bad luck came at once when the flu bug destroyed our chances of a good showing at the Interstate Swimming league Cham- pionships. We were unable to field an entire team and some swimmers who qualified for the finals were too sick to participate in their individual events. Overall, it was a successful season for the team under the leadership of captain Dan Fawcett. The highlight of the season came when the league title was captured with a 5-1 record, also giving the girls the allaround league championship. This never would have happened without all of the exhausting practices, and the leadership provided by captains Clare Henry, Ann Hilger, and Amy Hurite. All three seniors supplied the team with excellence in the various areas ofthe game: Hen- ry's rebounding and shooting under the basket, Hilger's outside shots and defense, and Hurite's dribbling and passing. A personal highlight came when Clare Henry scored 34 points against Mercersburg and proceeded to give an excellent performance in the Dar- danell Publications Classic All-Star Came. Although the team was lacking in numbers, the talent and dedication was there to pull out the victories including a 69-32 win over Ellis. The rainy Monday morning of May 12 vvas not enough to prevent the Senior class from taking a deserved cut day. The beauty of the Rattner's Li- gonier home, along vvith the many events of the day made it enjoyable. Even the lightning and the rain vvere not enough to pre- vent the seniors from partici- pating in such activities as motorcycling and beverage battling. Many of the motorcycle ma- niacs vvho tried their skill at jumping the Swamp ended up vvet and wishing that they had not dared. A late afternoon storm and subsequent povver failure sent most of the participants home, although some brave seniors stayed to aid in the cleanup efforts. Along with an array of before and after parties, the prom itself was a great success. Sparkling Midnight provided the entertainment for the evening. Hors d'oeuvres and punch provided refreshment. Both students and teachers enjoyed themselves. A Tropical Paradise, the theme for the prom, was achieved by adding brightly colored jungle flowers to the tropical setting of the Fox Chapel Golf Club. The flowers were given to the winners of a drawing held during the evening. The largest flower arrangement, however, was given to the winners of a dance contest. af' ' '-felt -1 Y . xx ,,.,nr' Lg TJ 'CCT -- iEiv, 4 011 if Lifers From left to right: jamie Katzin, Fritz Schwentker, Phil Goldblum, who although not a lifer has been with the Academy in spirit from the start, Andy Sayles, Mike Caplan, lim Adelsheim, Dave Edwards, lon Sabel, ,ray .V y- b a fm, i 1,6 ,,,, , V V llfl f iii: 1:3 ' , 'W 5 1 E., ,H 194 ,-5,43 A The class of 1980 had seven men, who, some might say, devoted their lives to a mental prison. These illustrious stu- dents are what is more com- monly referred to as lifers. They have survived twelve years at The Academy, The junior School, with the green chair, recess, naps, stickers on their foreheads, and paper football games before classes. The Middle School, with lamie's great sledding tech- niques, lvlr. Walzer's tests and staple gun throwing D.P.'s, and Mr. Mancosh's questions about drugs. And finally, The Senior School, with study halls, the two deans, Mr. Gre- gory's composition classes, the Man course, and Mr. Howson's college advice. The Lifers have the respect of the rest of the class of 1980 for their ability to survive twelve years at Shady Side. 195 YEAR ONE There we stood. Has anyone tried the doors? Locked. You'll never forget that first kiss you got, Or a crush on someone you liked alot. Yearbook, Homecomings and proms come into focus, And rovvdie behavior each day on the bus. The love and friendship at graduation, The pat on the back from the administration, The senior parties, like cherries atop the whipped cream, Twelve years of school finally over, or is it a dream? ln life we all have a different goal, Some of us will continue on in school, Others will join the services, And yet others vvill become Mr. and Mrs. In the years to come, we will reunite, And talk of old times on that special night, But the time will come to depart again, And leave behind Shady Side and many a friend. jeff Pollock 8O 197 1980 Commencement Exercises JILL nnpmnnnnullnnnliwllhliil ll' 198 5 ..
