STEFFEY DEDICATION Stewart H. Steffey passed away on November 6th after a long illness. All who knew him were aware of the great affection Mr. Steffey had for the Academy. A member of the class of 1937, he was elected a trustee in 1951. He was co-chairman of the commit- tee which raised funds for Mellon Gymnasium, chaired the committee responsible for building Memorial Hall, and was the Dean of the Academy's Class Agents. He also wrote the words to the Academy's Alma Mater. In 1973, he received the Robert E. Walker Award for Distinguished Alumni Service. It is to Mr. Steffey and his example of spirit and faithful service that the 1978 Acade- mian is dedicated. C.C. - LEAGUE CHAMPS The 1977 Interstate champion cross country team was a group of hardworking young men determined to fulfill their ultimate goal, to finish the course as quickly as possible. Dave Pure Prairie League Olds was the most eager to finish. breaking course records and remaining sky high hours after the meets were over. Bobbin Bill Gurtin and Terry muscles Knott were the next fastest. Gurt stuck to the flatter courses while T. K. remained versatile with his selections. Paul Bigstick Shea had his ups and downs throughout the season but his inconsistency was matched perfectly by the 200 proof consistency of the granual brothers, Ken and John. Tom Graham's mother's long distance sewing stood him in good stead and he proved once again man's best friend is the dog. Charlie Masterson was next. Thanks must be extended to Dr. Balash and the rest of the J.V. squad. Special thanks to Mr. McConnell without whom none of this would have been possible. Thanks Mac. I needed that!! The season ended in a 4-4 tie, Not a winning season but this is why. Our Greenburg matches were both rained + Out, We would have triumphed without a doubt At North Allegheny, where we got canned, We weren't used to playing in time to their band. Mt. Lebanon beat us, a clear decision, But they hold first place in our Division. Our other two losses came from lack Of support, As our manager's mind was not on the Court. We concluded from watching a few Approaches That he often was partial to the other Team's coaches. Those were our downfalls, more or less, But for every loss there was a success. Our ambitious training is to thank for That- Our practice drills, andjogging the track. With the help of Mr. Berry, who would Occasionally dare To put on whites and show us his flair - We managed to leam, improve, and Eventually win, Though some credit goes to our assistant Coach Kevin. Of course we included a little fun, An intersquad match, and to those who won The losers owed cokes, so to pay up The debts, We took off practice that Friday and Went to Pep's. That sums up our year, except to say A special thanks to our captain, Bev Kay. Lynn is a little Interested . - , camera shy r 11 - L- Win? ,1,, ,., 'u A401713 I-f ,M . ,, I, it , A ,,. It all began during pre-season when we met our new coach, Miss Baumgartener and her dreadful curcuit! After running it week after week we figured if we didn't prove to be victors every game we would at least run our opponent into exhaustion so they would remember us. And that we did! With the intense work on strategy with Miss Farr, Mrs. Douglas and Miss B.'s circuit we were a fairly strong and fast team. A starting line CVarsityJ consisting of Middle, Fran, Clare, Jill and Chesg as well as our super defense - Jetsy, Amy, Susi. Cindy C., Pat and Sue in the goal. Our J .V. was well conditioned even though they weren't always successful in scoring. A final record of 5-2-5 was well earned. Susi Hiles and Cindy Commendatore, 1977 co-captains, would like to wish the 1978 field hockey team and captain Fran McGovern GOOD LUCK in the next season. 94 f l,:':'f',f iff? ', 4712? ' ,, 1 2241, . Q! gf f , 2 f' 1 This year was certainly a most successful one for the Swimmin' Women. The '78 team was faced with an extremely difficult schedule, for the girls had to compete against many of the top high school girl's swim teams in the city. The Shady Side girl's swim team, however, always put up a tough fight, and many times succeeded by gaining a victory over these high school teams. The S.S.A. victories included Penn Hills, Brentwood, Shaler and Deer Lakes High Schools. Their defeats included Hampton. North Allegheny, Fox Chapel and Baldwin High Schoolsg however S.S.A. girls competed against most of these extremely competi- tive teams twice, and always improved their final score the second meet. This year, all the events were filled by capable and competitive girls. The Medley relay, which defeated the best high school girl's swim teams, included C. Kappel, K. Reynolds, A. Hilger and M. Kennedy. L. Malin, J. Katarinsic and Co-Captain C. Wilson all showed their endurance by swimming long and difficult events: the 200 l.M., the 100 Fly, the 200 Free and the 500 Free. M. Ken- nedy and Co-Captain A. Morton took first and second place in many of the meets, swimming the 50 and 100 Freestyle. While K. Reynolds and C. Kappel did equally as well in the l00 Breast and 100 Backstroke, respectively. The divers, M. McMahon and L. Dixon always placed high and added points to the teamls final score. Although the team is losing four seniors, Robin Avner, Liza Goldberg and Co-Captains Ann Morton and Carrie Wilson, it is looking forward to a successful '79 season. Some outstanding play was recorded by Rob Oppenheim, with a 77 against Springdale, and George Egan shot a 79 against Sewickley. One other member of the team should be commended for his effort, Jeff Buttner. He had trouble keeping his 4 wood in his hands, until one day the club took a deep dive into a small pond at Fox Chapel Golf Club. Jeff tried to get his club back, but he could not dive to the depths at which his club rested. Tal Heppenstall should be commended for his effort, but most of his days were spent watching girl's field hockey from a golf cart. It was truly a rewarding year for Tal and the entire golf team. Between the school closings and cancelled matches of January and February, the squad managed to build up a 5-3 record prior to League competition. Impressive victories over Aliquippa, Clairton, Sewickley, Bishop Boyle, and W.P.S.D. were mixed, with close and disappointing defeats at the hands of Riverview, Deer Lakes, and Hampton. These matches provided a good opportunity for some of Shady Side's younger wrestlers to gain needed experience for the League matches. Under the direction of coaches Grandizio and Kirkpatrick, the wrestlers entered League competition with uncertain expec- tations. A year before, the grapplers had not managed a single victory in the League. Traveling to Buffalo to face Nichols, the Indians found themselves in an extremely close low scoring match. Recording no pins, Shady Side squeaked out a 22-19 victory as Ben Succop narrowly avoided being pinned in the final match to preserve the win. A home match against Kiski followed with an enthusiastic anti-Kiski crowd cheering the squad on to a devastating 41-14 victory. The fired-up wrestlers and crowd witnessed pins by Jeff Hilger, Andy Shenkan, Steve Cohen, and Ben Succop, and decisions by Andy Hardie, John Leibrick, and Vaughn Yates. Shady Side's League record improved to 2-O. The team then traveled to defending cham- pion University School and disappointedly found themselves outmatched as the final score of 37-13 indicates. With an opportunity to capture second place in the League, the wrestlers readied themselves for Western Reserve, the final opponent of the season. The home crowd was fortunate to witness one of the most exciting matches in school history as the grapplers pulled out a stunning 28-26 victory. Individual victories were recorded by Jeff Hilger, Andy Shenken, Andy Hardie, Steve Cohen, and Gary Giallonardo. This year's team revolved around a core of experienced seniors and juniors. Senior co-captains Jeff Hilger and Gary Giallo- nardo provided excellent leadership to the team. The other seniors, Andy Hardie, MVP John Leibrick, and Kurt Stahlfeld will also be missed greatly next year. An excellent group of juniors will form the nucleus for next year's squad with co-cap- tains elect, Steve Cohen and Vaughn Yates leading the way. In addition, newcomer Mike Katz and heavyweights Ben Suc- cop and John Romualdi will also provide experience and leadership to the team. Sophomore Andy Shenkan, the team's most improved wrestler, will continue to provide excitement and victories next year. The two freshmen on this year's squad, Danny Schreiber and Mark Stiffler, helped the team a great deal and gained valuable experience for the future. These returning wrestlers in addition to a young and successful JV team will undoubtedly provide Shady Side with contin- ued excitement and success next year. Schreiber shoots for a takedown. The season's great success was accomplished by Mrs. Gregory's advanced coaching techni- ques. She went beyond the traditional blackboard plays to three-dimensional displays. Mrs. Gregory renamed the bas- ketball positions to the names of the Peanuts Gang. Helping in Mrs. Gregoryls success was the returning talents of co- captain Cindy Commendatore, Franny Magovern, Jill Cusick, Carrie Wilson, Susan Sayles, Amy Hurite and Linda Enerson. The team had two setbacks early in the season with the loss of co-captain, Lisa Scales and Bev Kay. Diver turned swimmer Dan Mrvos s -as uf KA:-vo 7 The 1977-78 Varsity Swimming Team finished its season with a misleading 2-6- l record. The team got off to their usual slow start and suffered early-season defeats to Fox Chapel, Butler, Linsly Military, League power house U.S., Penn Hills and League Champions Kiski. The turning point for the team came in a tie against Allderdice. From there, the team went on to beat Hampton and Western Reserve. At the League Championships at Kiski, the whole team reflected the type of improvement they had made. Captain Terry Jones turned in record-setting performances in both the fifty and one-hundred yard freestyle events. Divers Doug Clarke and Joe Paletta both came through once again and placed well in the tough competition. Backstroker Mike Pavsek turned in his best time for the year and fired well for the intensity of his competition. Charlie Steitz won his heat for the 200 yard freestyle but found the going a little tougher in the 500 yard freestyle. Juniors Dave Wholey, Peter Kyne and Gordie Fisher all performed well at their level of competi tion. Freshmen and Sophomores such as Dan Fawcett, Richie Kapple, Eric Sauereison, Dave Gilpatrick, Jeff Miller and Mike Hunt all enjoyed successful performances at the Championships. Over-all, the team took a fourth place, one place ahead of Linsly Military, who defeated the Indians during the regular season. This feat has never been accomplished by any other sport in Shady Side Academy's history. This year's championship team was led by co-captains John fthe wadj Molnar and Guy Herrmann. The rest of this years talented team was made up of seniors Scott Leslie fmost improved playerj, Kurt Stahlfield, Tal Heppenstall, Andy Bennett, Steve Papernickg juniors Todd Fos- ter, Bucko Rossi, Ben Succup, Jim Hiles, Grant Scott, Mark Giallonardo, Joe Cchicol Natoli, Mike Katz, Steve Scammon: and sophomore Mike fBimboj Knowle. Next year's team will be a duplicate of the 78 squad except for the losses of four year starter John Molnar, two year starter Guy Hermann, and the rest of the seniors. After a very helpful preseason in Florida the team entered into tough competition against North Hills, Fox Chapel, and Shaler. The team then entered into I.P.S.L. play by defeating W.R.A. 19-5, Nichols 9-0, and Kiski 12-5. The final game of the season was with the University School. Each team had three wins and no losses in league action. The game wasscore- less until the bottom of the seventh inning when Grant Scott hit a 2 run blast over deep center field to give SSA a 2-0 victory and the championship. Next year's team is looking forward to another L.I.P.S.L. championship. With Bucko Rossi as captain and ten returning lettermen, SSA will have a definite power edge over any other league team. The players will be ready to continue their reign as the I.P.S.L. powerhouse. t , S A 'fiQ:5'I1 l26 Co-captain John Molnar 7,4 46 4' lwiefftd Steve looking on from his usual position - the bench. Wins this season were over Plum, WPSD, Serra Catholic, Avonworth, and twice over Winchester and Sewickley. The team's losses were to Plum and Swissvale. This season contained many highlights, such as Franny Macgovern's team high batting average of .875 and Clare Hen- ry's seven homeruns. Out in the field, Shady Side had a strong and tight defense. Whether it was the infield or the outfield, the Indians defense was always a menace to the opponents batting ability. This year's team had many talented members, including seniors: Cyndie Commendatore at secondbase. Sue Herzog as pitcher, Cyndie Hume at catcher, Sam Pfiefer at centerfield, Sue Willis at firstbase, and Carrie Wilson at thirdbase. The only Junior on the team was Frarmy MacGovern who played at shortstop. The team had only two sophomores: Amy Hurite who played shortstop, secondbase and catcher, and Clare Henry who played centerfield. The lone fresh- man on the team was Mary Arn who played just about everywhere. Strong support came from other players such as Laurie Siegel, Lisa Middleman, Lisa Hench, and Ann Hilger. With four returning lettermen and a strong junior varsity team, next year's season is sure to be a winner under the captains Clare Henry and Franny MacGovern. Y: The I978 Varsity Tennis Team did not achieve the success it had planned on enjoying. Early season injuries decimated the line-up. Junior Steve Gross had appendicitis which forced him out for the entire season. Junior Steve Cohen, captain elect for 1979, had cauliflower ear and a muscle pull in his back that kept him out of action for half the season. However, when Cohen finally pulled his body together, he played the best tennis of his life at second singles. The relatively young team was led by captain Doug Field, winner of the Gregory Award, who played well at first singles. Strong double play was led by seniors Bill Reichblum and Jim Houston. Their partners were Junior Scott Aiken and the promising Sophomore Rob Bones Oppenheim. Other Seniors on the squad included Pete Austin, Steve Rattner, John Austin. and Steve Herwald. Two other Sophomores who played singles early in the season were Pete The Machine Ryan and Mark Cohonis Felman. With the maturation of the Juniors and Sophomores the team definitely plans on improving its 2-7 record next year. p , az y ,N 'E D S . i t 7 J if 7 , - Too quick for the camera. The squad, after having spent a week in Orlando Fla. preparing for the upcoming season. finished second in the league and compiled a season record of six wins. three losses and one tie. Co-Captains Terry Knott and Gary Giallonardo headed a team that attacked previous school records and showed outstanding effi- ciency in the individual events. Highlights of the season included Terry Jones' new school record high jump of 6'3V2 inches at the Interstate competition. David Olds shattered the old 2 mile record with a time of 9 minutes and 42 seconds, while Billy Gurtin set the mile record with a time of 4 minutes 21.4 seconds. Not to be outdone by his teammates, Terry Knott tied the school record in the 440 yard dash with a time of 50.5. The efficiency records were high throughout all events this season due to highjumpers Terry Jones and Dave Wentley who placed first and second in every dual meet. Also, longjumpers Kelvin Anderson and Chris Gee dominated their event by also taking first and second in every dual meet. Though the team is graduating l4 senior lettermen. new faces this year will be depended upon to compensate for the loss of the sen- iors. The shot and discus, dominated for three years by Gary Giallonardo will now look to Bill McCarthy, Dan Forbes. and David Wagner in the hopes of maintaining a dynasty in the two events. Also returning next year are lettermen Craig Adams and Kenny Leibrick. Their experience will be a determining factor in the outcome of next season. Coach Dave Buran will be looking for new faces in many events, especially in the pole vault where three lettermen. Joe Paletta, John Leibrick, and Bill Hoffman will be graduat- ing. I missed the point of the steeple, bounced off the roof, and landed in some shrubs below. Four hours later, some maintenance workers picked me up, carried me to Mr. Snyder, and tried to convince him that I was the piano that they had misplaced several months earlier. The morphine is starting to take affect now. The pain subsists slowly and for a few short hours I am close to nirvana, or at least somewhere in the vicinity of Etna. I will try to remain calm and convey to you the events which culminated in my attempted suicide. As a result of pressures in my freshman year, I developed some minor psychological disorders. For one thing, I imagined that I was a pair of Sam Greene's socks. Each time I saw Greene strutting across the quadrangel, I rushed towards him, fell to my knees, and tried to wrap myself around his ankles. Greene would merely pat my head and say uthere, there. Contrary to popular opin- ion, Greene was a compassionate loving man. After I had discussed my problem with him, he permitted me to sleep in his drawer, along with his argyles. After some months, this particular affliction cleared up, but was replaced with an even more bizarre behavioral aberration - the desire to consume Latin text books. I had never taken Latin before, although I had taken heroin. There was a small brotherhood of students who met in a broom closet on the third floor on Thursday afternoons, along with a faculty adviser - a dignified gen- tleman whose one remarkable characteristic was his ability to say the word nutrition with such passion that people would weep uncontrollably. At first, we would get high by eating the Latin books, but soon our faculty adviser showed us how to convert the pages into liquid form, so that we could inject the stuff into our arms. By the time I was a sophomore, I needed a fix of Latin-3 just to make it through the morning. I was really desperate. I was going through cold turkey when the administration announced its plan to manufacture squash-balls from fifth-quin- tile students. I couldn't believe it. Apparently, the Athletic Department had muscled the program through as part of a larger plot to reduce their expenditures so that they could afford to raise a standing army. They planned to annex the upper campus and to build a Coliseum there. if Q . Well. I wasn't going to wait around for them to cut my body up into hard little rubber balls. so l decided to escape. I would simply walk off the campus and start a new life somewhere else. When I got to the gates. I discovered that my plan was impossible because when one gets to the edge of the campus, one is at the end of the world. There was nothing at the end of the brick drive- way but a dark abyss from which emanated noxious fumes and the hideous groans of Fox Chapel Police. The next few minutes were my darkest and most dangerous. I was forced to go into hiding in the Memorial Hall loft. where my only sustenance was orange peels. dust. and an occasional freshman. tl used to nab them as they came out of their Man Lecture. No one ever noticed they were missing. except for the Dean's secretary. but I made a deal with her. Never mind the terms.J In the beginning of myjunior year. I began to hear vague rumors of a Savior who was to come to us full of majesty and righteous- ness. and free us from our bondage and toil. as soon as he could find his car keys. He was said to be a tall. dark man with a South- ern accent. When he finally came. I felt that it was safe to leave my hiding place. but no sooner had I descended the stairs from the loft than I was forced to sit in a semi-circle with a group of people and rap about death. I. for one. made it quite clear that I was not in favor of it. 4 All the talk about death got me feeling pretty down. and that's when I decided to do myself in. But even suicide failed! So I suppose I'll go on. . . But who can live with the knowledge that Richard Gable tortures small animals? - John Hill i 5 dd ' M FISHING CLUB ' YY 3' ., Q, 4 r 4419 ZZ.
