Bernard Jackson Felch For the three years he has been associated with Shady Side Academy, Mr. Bernard J. Felch has contributed a great deal towards the progress of the school. Being mainly respon- sible for the successful expansion ot the art department, he avidly watched the increasing popularity ot art at Shady Side. As Faculty Advisor to the ACADEMIAN for all his tenure at Shady Side, Mr, Felch has been forced to put up with the whims and procrastinations of the editors. Treasurer EDITORIAL Yearbook editors like graduation speakers find it difficult to escape the cliches and plati- tudes that pour out at the end of each aca- demic year. We, the editors of THE ACA- DEMIAN of l958, do not boast of having avoided this deluge of words. We merely hope that most of them are correctly spelled. The innovations are perhaps worth a word or two. We have color for the first time-foun color process. A huge new pictorial section introduces the main business of the book. The intent was to build up a photographic record of the school year '57-'58 with the accent on the candid view, allowing this to contrast pleasantly with the more formal sections to follow. ln your wanderings through this sec- tion you may detect a striven-for continuity and also some evidence of creative work by members of the photography staff, The many angles, circles, and tones spread about on the varsity team pages are a whim of an editor, and editors, being a sensitive but tardy lot, must have their way Fac. Adv. notwithstanding. We have not made a great thing of the 75th anniversary of this academy. The June publi- cation of THROUGH THE YEARS by Mr. Byron Waldrop marks a much more significant tribute to this historic event than we could make. Regarding the Class of '58, we can say with some pride that ours was a League Champion- ship year and a good crop of Cum Laude candidates was acknowledged at commence- ment. This was not all the doing of '58ers but enough evidence of leadership, scholarship, and of varied talents Ccampus varietyl was offered by members of this class to build a sound record. We hope that this record has now been enhanced by another kind of record, THE ACADEMIAN, and that future glances into this book will bring you pleasant memories of the year '57-'58.
