Felch has contributed a great deal towards the progress of the school. Being mainly respon- sible for the successful expansion ot the art department, he avidly watched the increasing popularity ot art at Shady Side. As Faculty Advisor to the ACADEMIAN for all his tenure at Shady Side, Mr, Felch has been forced to put up with the whims and procrastinations of the editors. To a most considerate and under- standing man we, the editors of the i958 ACADEMIAN, dedicate this yearbook. 4 STAFF William C. Johnson . W. Davison Gordon, Jr. Nelson McVicar ll . . M. Senior Editor Jr. . . Faculty Editor . . Treasurer EDITORIAL Yearbook editors like graduation speakers find it difficult to escape the cliches and plati- tudes that pour out at the end of each aca- demic year. We, the editors of THE ACA- DEMIAN of l958, do not boast of having avoided this deluge of words. We merely hope that most of them are correctly spelled. The innovations are perhaps worth a word or two. We have color for the first time-foun color process. A huge new pictorial section introduces the main business of the book. The intent was to build up a photographic record of the school year '57-'58 with the accent on the candid view, allowing this to contrast pleasantly with the more formal sections to follow. ln your wanderings through this sec- tion you may detect a striven-for continuity and also some evidence of creative work by members of the photography staff, The many angles, circles, and tones spread about on the varsity team pages are a whim of an editor, and editors, being a sensitive but tardy lot, must have their way Fac. Adv. notwithstanding. We have not made a great thing of the 75th anniversary of this academy. The June publi- cation of THROUGH THE YEARS by Mr. Byron Waldrop marks a much more significant tribute to this historic event than we could make. Regarding the Class of '58, we can say with some pride that ours was a League Champion- ship year and a good crop of Cum Laude candidates was acknowledged at commence- ment. This was not all the doing of '58ers but enough evidence of leadership, scholarship, and of varied talents Ccampus varietyl was offered by members of this class to build a sound record. We hope that this record has now been enhanced by another kind of record, THE ACADEMIAN, and that future glances into this book will bring you pleasant memories of the year '57-'58. Heavens, Eddie! A ' 'LM Y St, Andrew's Society, a group dedi- cated to the discussion and considera- tion of religious and moral issues, was guided this year by Mr. Jones, Mr. Mann, and Mr. Follansbee. Many dis- tinguished speakers talked to the group on aspects of prayer. The Rev. Harry Peelor's presentation of the sub- ject Psychology of Prayer provided a stimulating and thought-provoking evening for the members of the Soci- ety. After hearing experts in the field of religion, St, Andrew's members Roy- den Astley, '58, and lvan Rollit, '58, offered their personal views on prayer in the life of the student. Early in the fall term upper-formers who have made a good record of at- tendance and of support in the discus- sions of the previous year are voted into St. Andrew's Society. When compared with the many years ot unimaginative, repetitive issues, the '58 book with its tour-color liner and Johnsonian layouts is a pleasant pic- torial history of the entire year. The editors have had first-hand experience in creating copy, layouts, and in ma- nipulating artwork and photographs against blocks of typography, This ex- perience plus exposure to the evils of the deadline should bode well tor those students who plan to go on into adver-V tising and publications careers. Johnson, Astley lwho missed the deadlinel, and Gordon work on final layouts. f . -- . Q , ,,-,, ,, ,,.. , . M , t.,..,,..,t Sitting: Wechsler, Levin. The Shady Side News is Shady Side's bi- weekly, six-page newspaper. Led by the Editor- in-Chief and a faculty advisor, the newspaper is entirely the work of the students from the time assignments are made until page proofs are submitted to the printer. Having its editorial offices in the basement of Ellsworth House, and its business office on the third floor of the same dormitory, the News is a five-day-a-week job for many of the staff. Often beginning work at 2:30, a day's copy is assembled at 5:00 p.m., at which time the faculty advisor and the Editor-in-Chief travel to the printers. Five days a week this process of writing stories, proof-reading copies, and making up the paper continues until, at last, on alternate Fridays, the News is distributed. The Egerian is the one cam- pus publication which enables students to publish creative work such as short stories, essays, poetry, and artwork. A staff of upper farmers with their supervisor, Mr. Willard E. Mead, invite students in any of the tive forms to submit articles, The Egerian publishes only once a year, the organiza- tion culls out, therefore, only the better compositions for publication. ,X Wechsler, Berman, and visitor Levin proof read copy. Several excellent concerts more than fully compensated for the long hours spent throughout the year in Monday and Thursday evening rehearsals. The Octet, formed this year from club members representing every form, entertained audi- ences with their clever rendition of Standing on the Corner. Competing in the Forensic League Competi- tion, the Culee Club received a rating of Excellent in the county trials. Other highlights of the season included the Combined Concert with Ellis School and the Annual Spring Concert. The first public performance was the twenty-third combined Shady Side-Ellis concert, held February 2l, l958. The Spring Concert was also the debut of a successful new group, the Dixieland Band. FORUM The Forum, the only discussion group open to all forms, requires its members to attend meetings regu- larly and to take part in the meetings when so requested. Guided by members' opinions as to which topics would be interesting to hear about and discuss, Mr. Cook, the faculty advisor to the Forum, arranged to have Mr. Holbrook G, Botset who is head of the Department of Petroleum Engineers at the University of Pittsburgh, Mr, Joseph Shuman, the City Editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and a representative of the Young Presidents' Organization, as well as others, as speakers. Just as interesting as the talks of the adult speakers were the timely student panel discus- sions on Segregation, Communism, and Missiles and Satellites. 82 Every period of every day there is in the library a Senior or Junior whose job it is to return books to their proper places, compile statistics on library usage, and take the attend- ance lists to Study Hall. These Seniors and Juniors are members of the Library Commit- tee. Ofteri they take over the library when Mrs. Botset and Mrs. Leaman are busy elsewhere. At the end of the year Senior Committee mem- bers are given books of their choice as gifts for aiding Mrs. Botset in her important work. Members this year created ci stained glass effect for a Christmas display in Rowe Hall and organ- ized an all-student art show which revealed some hidden talent. The Art Club members borrowed paintings of their choice from the Pittsburgh Plan for Art and sponsored exhibits such as the Rembrandt exhibition and a show of recent oils by Rebecca Berman, mother of Peter Berman, '58. 84 Members of the Shop Club became enthusiastic water ski makers during the year. Despite the difficult bending and cutting processes involved, several excellent pairs were completed. Mr. Cook, Adviser to the Shop Club, directed the production ot a large win- dow frame for the Gargoyle play and a scoreboard tor the lnterstate Track Meet. Younger members hammered together the usual crop of bird feeders and miniature picnic tables and ex- hausted the supply of Band-Aids. The 7-1 record and tie for the Interstate Preparatory League was certainly indicative of the fine team, ably directed by head coach, Mr. William Eaton, who in his first year in this capacity, did a remarkable job. He was assisted by coaches Robert D. Abercrombie, Hugh Mc. Lynch, and F. Walter Jones. Determined to avenge last year's disappointing record, Shady Side's varsity gridders commenced the 1957 campaign on September 14, playing the Ligonier Mounties. In the first quarter halfback Ray Conway, in his football debut at S.S.A., weaved 19 yards for a touchdown. Near the end of the first quarter Bing Beeson, tallied again. Moments later Bryan Campbell scored on a 58- yard pass play from Paul Martha. Ligonier's team finally bounced back, but in the final moments of the game Conway again reached for paydirt and put the game on ice with a score of 25-13. When Shady Side took the field at Oakmont, they were a 21-point underdog, but this fact only inspired them. Shady Side tallied two points in the opening moments on a safety and never lost the lead as Wycoff and Conway later scored. The following Saturday, Shady Side fans saw the hosting Kiski team score early in the game. The Indians, however, returned in the second quarter with an 81-yard drive. A safety by Sayers and a T.D. by Beeson gave the Blue and Gold a 15-7 lead which they never relinquished. For its first league tilt on October 12, a flu- ridden Shady Side team made the long trek to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, to play Cranbrook. The game quickly showed itself to be an over- whelming disaster for the visitors, and the power- house Cranbrook team racked up 29 points before Nelson McVicar could plunge for a score. Final score: 46-19. With a two-week intermission an inspired Shady Side team rolled over! Western Reserve Academy, 36-6. All team members gave outstanding performances, but the low oppo- nent score ftotal: 5 goalsl was due to fine defen- sive work by goalie Steve Eller and the high S.S.A. score Ctotal: 37 goals? was largely the work of the effective combination of John Gordon U3 goalsl and Frank Famariss UO goalsb. Defensive stars Rothenberg, Rog Wiegand and Stanley were com- parable in excellence to the line combination of Famariss, Hill, Gordon, and Jim and John Pitcairn and to halfbacks Leezer, Thorp and Spitz. Early victories over Connelly Vocational, 2-O and 9-l, Washington Vocational, 3-O, and W.P.S.D., 6-O, set the winning pace. A victory over the Pitt Freshmen by the narrow margin of 3-2 preceded the first league contest with Cranbrook. Coach Berg resorted to unusual tactics to save this game. After John Gordon scored late in the third period, all eleven men were pulled into Shady Side terri- tory for defense for the remainder of the game. A let-down at W.R.A. produced a l-l tie, but the team returned to top form to trounce the Pitt Frosh, 6-O. A 3-O win over W.P.S.D. left only two league contests to be played. ln exciting, close play Shady Side downed Nichols 2-l and U. S. l-O to gain undisputed Inter-State championship. The '58-'59 team could easily have the some winning ways with Charlie Thorp, winner of the Oberlin Trophy for the most valuable player, and Frank Famoriss, the co-captains, being replaced by John Pitcairn and Roger Wiegand, two of the six returning lettermen. Walter Jones, triumphed in the Interstate Prep League, bringing the champion- ship to Shady Side with a 4-O record. A tabulation of the season's results shows that the hoopsters won 16 ball games, while dropping only 6. The season opened during the Christmas recess, with S.S.A. knocking off its first three competitors with ease. A last minute rally by Edgewood, how- ever, led to our first defeat, and Shaler followed up this unhappy example, to give us a one-two punch. The squad quickly abandoned its losing ways and overpowered the next four opponents. Against Allegheny Vocational the hoopsters racked up the amazing, record-breaking score of 93-39. But, sadly, the string of victories could not be main- tained against a strong Brentwood team. After the Brentwood loss, followed three more S.S.A. triumphs. By this time the team looked forward to the first league contest against the Cranes of Cran- brook. The school was not disappointed, as Rufus Blocksidge piloted the squad to victory by scoring 32 points and breaking a thirteen-year-old indi- vidual scoring record. After a loss to Crofton, the team traveled to Nichols and, with the help of a strong bench squad, rolled up a narrow victory. The score, how- ever, does not indicate the dominant play of Shady Side, whose team consisted much of the time of second-stringers. ' The third league contest saw Western Reserve at Shady Side. lt was W.R.A. that caused us to lose the B-ball championship in '57, and we were determined not to let it happen again. The S.S.A. hoopsters were in command all the way, and once again second teams played out the fourth quarter. Only one more team stood in the way of a league championship. Ned Eckhardt, 102 Captain- Mr. Jones, coach. Tom Nash, manager. Rufe taps one in. Traditionally, the toughest team on the sched- ule is North Catholic. Although the varsity played hard and well, the overwhelming strength of North was too much to contend with. ln the next game, with the Carnegie Tech Freshmen, the team again played well but futilely against stronger foes. The crowning game of the season occurred on the University School basketball court. The con- test would determine the league champs and the S.S.A. students backed the team up by a mass exodus to Cleveland to cheer the team on. Setting off to a slow start, we had to work hard to tie the game up at the end of the first half. But, in the third quarter, the team pushed into the lead. In the final minutes of the game, University was within two points of Shady Side, but some fine foul shooting by John Pitcairn sewed up both the game and the championship. VARSITY WRESTLI G Although this year's wrestling team suffered a 5-7 losing record, the season was brightened by winning the Inter-State Wrestling Championship and by a fourth place in the Lehigh Tournament. The Indians dropped their opener to West View High, l9-20. Engroff and Faller won decisions and Lieberman pinned in the second period. Captain Sayers' first period pin was not enough to tip the scales in Shady Side's favor. At West Allegheny Engroff, Hill, Lieberman, Faller, and Wiegand decisioned their opponents, but the team was defeated, l4-24. In the first home match Shady Side was overwhelmed by a power- ful Munhall team, l6-26. However, at Kiski the Indians easily rolled over their traditional rivals, 38-6. The match was highlighted by many Shady Side pins, including Faller's pin over Cocco and Sayers' decision over Kiski's captain, Morgan. Mt. Lebanon High downed the wrestlers, 14-24. Sayers was outstanding in making his second period pin. Shady Side traveled to Shaler to meet the strongest district team. Here they suffered a crushing 7-32 defeat with Mitchell, wrestling two weight classes above his own, pinning his man to score Shady Side's only win. In spite of the score 'IDA the individual matches were close with many being won by a single point. The Indians re- bounded to upset the highly rated Cranbrook team on the home mat in the first Inter-State clash. This was sweet revenge for the sound beat- ing absorbed by SSA. in the '57 Cranbrook con- test. Jeannette High fell 36-9. Engroff, Anthony, Spitz, and Wiegand decisioned while Lawrence and Faller both pinned in the second period and Sayers pinned the Westmoreland County heavy- weight champion at the thirty second mark of the third period. On February l5 the Indians took a match from the Pioneers of W.R.A. 27-9. Lieberman easily defeated his opponent 6-l and Faller defeated McClure of W.R.A., 6-O. Doutt brought the next victory in the l38-pound class. Wiegand's decision was followed by a pin by monstrous Borus in his second varsity appear- in Metz, anager. J im Sayers, captain. Mr. Eaton, coach. Doutt pins . ance. The afternoon was capped by second period pins by Sayers and Rollit. The grapplers then traveled to Carnegie where they came very close to upsetting the powerful home team. The final score was 2l-23. Against a much improved West View team the Indians were ineffective and fell I5-30. To close the season the wrestling team traveled to Shaker Heights where they success- fully downed University School 24-l l to win the Inter-State League crown for the first time in many years. Captain Sayers iwith 43 points? won the Lehigh Trophy for the most valuable wres- tler. Third high scorer, Dave Faller Cwith 36 pointsl, won the Peter Bolanis Award for the most improved wrestler after reversing his 2-lO record of last year. Mike Lieberman lwith 37 points? had an ll-l record and he was elected captain of the '59 team. Mitchell rides opponent . and Faller reverses LEHIGH TGURNAME T The ending of a season is often important in setting the mood with which the season is remembered. Such an ending occurred this year as, under the guidance of Coach William N. Eaton, virtually the entire wrestling team entered the Prep School Wrestling Tournament at Lehigh University in May. Competition was the toughest the team had ever encountered thus through the first two rounds and the con- solation matches many Shady Side boys were defeated. Some of these boys contributed points towards Shady Side's tie for fourth place out of the nineteen teams entered. Three grapplers in particular achieved notable success. Jim Pitcairn won a fourth place in the consolation match. Jim Sayers' second place in the heavyweight division was beaten in point value and achievement only by Mike Lieber- man's championship in the 103 pound class. Mike, next year's captain, put on one of the finest wrestling exhibitions ever produced by a Shady Side wrestler. J. . WRE TLI G Front Row: W. Kopetz, Criep, Sellers, J. Haber, Hawk, G. ARSITY BASEBALL Under the excellent coaching of Messrs. Fol- lansbee and Thorpe, this year's varsity baseball team equaled last year's record of 8-5. With only four returning lettermen, Captain Bryan Camp- bell, '58, John Pitcairn, '59, Captain-Elect Kenneth Salmon, '59, and Paul Martha, '60, the team came through effectively in the latter part of the season despite a shaky start. The first game of the season was at home against Crofton, a team that later went on to become runner-up in WPIAL baseball competi- tion. Despite first-gcrme jitters the lndians made it close, losing 5 to 3. The lndians the'n hosted Peabody and defeated them easily 7-O, behind the one-hit pitching of John Pitcairn. Next came a two-game losing streak to Shaler, 5-2, and to North Catholic, 3-O. For its first away-game the team traveled to Kiski, where S.S.A. won an eight-inning thriller, 6-3. Originally scheduled to be played Saturday, May 3, the S.S.A.-W.R.A. encounter was post- poned to the following Monday. W.R.A. beat the lndians l-O despite the excellent pitching of Kenny Salmon. The next game proved to be one of the strangest in Shady Side history: a l4- inning pitching duel between John Pitcairn and Nichols' Dunlap, won finally by a squeeze bunt by Pitcairn in the l4th. ln their first encounter with the Pitt Freshmen the Varsity Nine won 6-4 behind some clutch hitting. and pitching. In a return engagement with Peabody S.S.A. was victorious 8-4. Another match with Pitt Freshmen showed the lndians in the losing column, l-4. The Indian basemen then began to roll defeating Wilkinsburg and Kiski, 3-O and 4-l respectively. In the third league encounter of the season S.S.A. met University School, a team they hadn't defeated in fourteen years. This time, however, they turned the trick and won 5-3 behind the pitching of Ken Salmon, North Catholic High O Brian Campbell, captain. Mr. Follansbee, coach. Dave Faller, manager. VAR ITY TRACK Led by Captain James Wechsler, '58, the track squad out-pointed its dual and tri-meet opponents to end the season with a 9-l record. This obvious success resulted from unusually high team spirit and superb conditioning rather than star performers. The harriers downed their first competitors, Baldwin High, by reversing last year's score and taking the meet with a 30-point margin. After the Hampton victory opposition began to stiffen as the team edged Shaler by a narrow margin. With three key men absent the Jonesmen met their single defeat of the year at the hands of a strong Penn High team. The Baldwin team met with little better luck in a return meet and Kiski proved highly over-rated. Bethel became the sixth victim of the Shady Side tracksters. ln the Peabody-Turtle Creek tri-meet our harriers won again. The squad slightly increased last year's margin over Peabody while Turtle Creek came in a poor third, the scores being 65M, 53-5f6, 28V2. It was in this meet that Captain Wechsler made his 9.9 in the hundred to tie the school record. The University School meet was one of the closest of the track season with both teams having the same strong events. Shady Side won by a l7h margin. The team participated in the Western Reserve Relays for the first time and managed a sixth place in afield of twelve. At the Mt. Lebanon invitational Track Meet Shady Side took a seventh place out of twenty-five entries. This meet was highlighted for Shady Side by an excellent second in the two-mile run, fourth in the 880 relays, fourth in the shot-put, and a second in the discus. In the last meet, the colorful Inter-State Track Meet held at,Shady Side Acad- emy, the hosting Jonesmen, who were plagued with injury and hard luck, took a third place. Pole vaulter Bing Beeson was the only Blue and Gold trackman to win an event as he barely missed setting a new Inter-State record. The team's score was boosted by Pete Gillies' second in the H4 Mr. Jones, coach. Jim Wechsler captoin Foster Stewart manager Schuler clears the bar while Beeson runs. 880-yard run and by Jim Sayers' contributions, which were a second in the shot-put lmissed first by one inchl and a second in the discus, Fresh- man Glen Derby thrilled the shot put gallery Cond his coochesl with his fine throw of 49 feet, ll inches. Thus ended one of the most successful years in track history at Shady Side Academy. 'l'l5 1 VAR ITY TENN S The varsity tennis team suffered its worst season of the last five years as it ended this year with a 9-5 won-lost record. The team was in constant flux with Captain Charlie Thorp at first singles and Roger Wiegand at second singles being the only two players to maintain the some positions throughout the year. Five different players got a crack at the third singles position and Coach Richard Gregory tried six combinations at the two doubles positions. Thorp ended his long tennis career at Shady Side this season, but he dropped four matches, finishing with a record of 32 and 6. For the second year in a row Roger Wiegand was the team's most consistent winner as he finished the season with a record of IO wins and 3 losses. This year saw Roger's record rise to a brilliant 22 wins, four losses. The Indians opened their season by defeating Alderdice High School on the Arsensal Courts, 4-I. The team then hosted Mt. Lebanon for the first home match. Although the perennially strong Mt. Lebanon team was weaker than usual, Shady Side lost 4-I. Wiegand was the only Indian to win in this match. The Pitt Frosh came to Shady Side for the next match, and the Indians won, 4-I, in a much easier match than they had expected. The team hosted Kiski for their next match and won an upset victory, 3-2. Kiski was, without doubt, the strongest local team that Shady Side played. A home match with the newly organized Shaler team gave Coach Gregory a chance to use his reserves, as Shady Side won, 4-I. The Indians opened their league competition auspiciously as they defeated Western Reserve 4-I at W.R.A. Every winning match went to three sets in this unusually hard-fought contest. Shady Side then hosted Alderdice for a return match and ran into much stiffer competition than they had encountered earlier against the same team. Shady Side edged the visitors, 4-3. Nichols provided the competition for the Indians first home league match. They defeated the Indians soundly, 4-I. Shady Side next traveled to Shaler for.a return match and won an easy 3-I victory. At Kiski, Kiski gained revenge on the Indians, 3-2. S.S.A. continued its losing streak as they dropped a 3-I return match with the Pitt Freshmen at Wildwood. University School defeated the Indians at Shady Side, 4-I. In the last match of the season the team reached its peak, gaining revenge over Mt. Leba- non, 3-2. The last scheduled league match with Cranbrook was rained out, and so the Indians final record in league competition was I-2. This record was good enough to gain Shady Side only a fourth place in the final league standings. Coach Gregory felt, however, at the season's end that the team had made a much better showing than he had earlier thought possible. He especially compli- mented the fine playing of next year's Captain, Roger Wiegand and the managing of senior Tim Higgins. He is hopeful of a good season next year with George Cass, John Haskell, and Jordy Miller returning. 116 'F +80 1' 1-'54 of if f xewawm 'O Q9 Q O .9 Q if O 1 Q9 Q 9 e k+Wv'av'6a , , . . . , , Q ff ' if 1: f McVicor reaches while Wiegand serves. ARSITY GULF The '58 varsity golf team, showing the benefits of the efforts of coaches Abercrombie and Vaux, posted an outstanding 8-3 won-lost record. Low medalist for the year was next year's captain Spencer Hirshberg. The team enjoyed beating traditional rivals Har-Brock and Penn Hills with excellent performances by moinstays Captain Bill Pultz, sophomore Jim Malone, and Hirshberg. The team started the season with a dis- appointing lV2-MM loss to consistently strong Penn Hills, but it took Har-Brock in the second contest lOM'5V2. The team then established a three-match winning streak until Har-Brack captured a return match, 2-l4. Oakmont next fell to the varsity strokers whc this time established a four-match streak downing Penn Hills in a return match, 9V2- 6V2.
