Foreword The Class of 1949 holds an especial place in my affections for one special reason, among many: they started their career as Second Formers at the Senior School at the same time as I began my work as Headmaster. We were neophytes on the Fox Chapel campus together. I feel I know them better than any other class, and they have been very helpful to the administration, They have supported the varied activities of the Academy with intelligence and enthusiasm. Their interest in the morale and welfare of Shady Side was never more evident than when they energized the Student Council and made it a constructive force on the campus. As I write this, the returns on the year are not by any means all in. But nothing is apt to change the picture fundamentally. When the class graduates. there will be a big gap left, but so closely have the leaders of '49 Worked with the leaders of '50 that we expect that the transition will be as smooth as possible, as the Seal is handed to the Fifth Form representative at Commencement, For the loyalty of the Seniors, whose book this is, everyone connected with Shady Side should be grateful. They should make a fine Alumni class. We will follow their careers, as We have the careers of the old boys before them, with keen interest. And those of us who stay here and Work with the younger lads, as they come into their own special responsibilities, will always remember the aca- demic year 1948-49 as one of the very best. It is a pleasure, in the name of the faculty and the Trustees, to Wish the best of luck and the deepest satisfactions of life to the class of 1949. ERDMAN HARRIS

Bvhiraxiinn l MR. ERWIN W. COLE Too often we tend to forget that Shady Side Academy is really composed of two schools, and that every Academian represents both the Senior and the Junior Schools. No present member of Shady Side has served more faithfully for a longer period of time than Mr. Erwin W. Cole, who has been Headmaster of the Shady Side Junior School for thirty-six vears. ln honor of his service to the Academy and his guidance of boys and fathers of boys who have graduated from Shady Side, this edition of the Academian is dedicated.
