We were neophytes on the Fox Chapel campus together. I feel I know them better than any other class, and they have been very helpful to the administration, They have supported the varied activities of the Academy with intelligence and enthusiasm. Their interest in the morale and welfare of Shady Side was never more evident than when they energized the Student Council and made it a constructive force on the campus. As I write this, the returns on the year are not by any means all in. But nothing is apt to change the picture fundamentally. When the class graduates. there will be a big gap left, but so closely have the leaders of '49 Worked with the leaders of '50 that we expect that the transition will be as smooth as possible, as the Seal is handed to the Fifth Form representative at Commencement, For the loyalty of the Seniors, whose book this is, everyone connected with Shady Side should be grateful. They should make a fine Alumni class. We will follow their careers, as We have the careers of the old boys before them, with keen interest. And those of us who stay here and Work with the younger lads, as they come into their own special responsibilities, will always remember the aca- demic year 1948-49 as one of the very best. It is a pleasure, in the name of the faculty and the Trustees, to Wish the best of luck and the deepest satisfactions of life to the class of 1949. ERDMAN HARRIS Bvhiraxiinn l MR. ERWIN W. COLE Too often we tend to forget that Shady Side Academy is really composed of two schools, and that every Academian represents both the Senior and the Junior Schools. No present member of Shady Side has served more faithfully for a longer period of time than Mr. Erwin W. Cole, who has been Headmaster of the Shady Side Junior School for thirty-six vears. ln honor of his service to the Academy and his guidance of boys and fathers of boys who have graduated from Shady Side, this edition of the Academian is dedicated. ? 1 I 3111 illiemnriam On March 17 of this year Mrs. Evelyn Crosland, who served the Academy for twenty-six years, died on the Shady Side campus. Her spirit and willingness to work until she no longer had the strength are an inspiration to all those Who knew her, What she gave to the Academy in loyal service cannot be measured. As dietitian and house mother she showed interest in all the boys and the staff so that her death will be a great personal loss to everyone. We, the class of l949, dedicate this page in our Academian to her memory. If you can imagine the graduating class of 1949 as being twenty years older, but living in the year 1849, you will be presented with a topsy-turvey situation. Picture yourself as an immigrant getting off the 'Flying Cloud in New York and moving slowly westward in the promised land. Walking down the gangplank as you get off the ship you notice a familiar face carrying your luggage. DICK CLAXTON is working as a coolie laborer- we toss him a few grains of rice and move on. Feeling somewhat hungry we move over to a popcorn concession on the corner of the wharf. We find LEE O'NAN the concessionaire. On the end of a long rope we see a small, gibbering, dancing monkey, JIM PANGBURN, no less. It is Jim's job to attract business by jumping around making faces. This is right in his line. We hop into a carriage driven by VERT MOONEY on our way to a hotel and we notice a string of safe-driving medals on his tattered taxi-uniform. Following his love of horses, FRED CLOSE is now employed following the horses with a broom, bucket, and shovel. On our way down Wall Street we see the disgruntled figure of VAUGHN WILSON sitting on the steps of the Decker Trustf??D Company. Apparently scroogey Rog could not be fooled into buying C.V.'s worthless gold mine stock. Doorman at our hotel is BIG JOHN DELACIO who on the side is bar- keeper and janitor. In his crawlings around the hotel as janitor, John has come in contact with some famous characters of the times. Two of these, HARVEY RAMSEY and VIC FIRTH have monopolized some sort of business or other, something about tales-must be writers. Just before leaving the railroad station on our way West we see that detec-- tive of world renown NELSON GILMORE on the trail of a suspect. Several days earlier Nelson trapped the fiendish thug UCREEPING WILL MCCUL- LOUGH walking thru a wall. His success is due in particular to a long-nosed bloodhound, MILT ISAY, whom he uses on perplexing cases. Stopping off where the Monongahela meets the Allegheny Cand forms the broad Ohiol we visit the real estate office of JOHN LEGGETT, famed asylum builder. At present he is working on a prep school somewhere in Fox Chapel. Next we see BOB COOPER, quite riled, rushing up and down the streets in search of a lost girl, and stopping on a corner to ask fruit vendor BOB HEN- DEL directions. Ivan puts down his bunch of bananas long enough to say the only things that matter are those big grey eyes. Although thousands of men have found gold in the California hills, BILL MCMOIL found a gold bar right here in Pittsburgh. Bill has a somewhat miserly attitude and spends his whole time with his new find. ALAN LEFKOWITZ, an old hand at journalism, has done quite well for himself. He has just been appointed editor of that radical but influential newspaper, the East Liberty Shopping News. Congratulations, Al!! As we get moving once more on our weary way westward we see that our engineer is none other than TED WENTZ. He kept shouting about wanting a locomotive and he finally got it. The first place we stop in the Windy City is WAKIE BOWSER'S lingerie shop. Wakie serves as a model Ctightly wound in a corsetl in his own window. He derives the most pleasure from flexing his muscles and thrilling the passing ladies. HENRY KIPP has been nroven insane and nlaced in one of Chicago's finest institutions. Kindly JIM VAUX has taken the job of keeper and merely sticks pins in the blabbering Henry to keep him quiet. As we move through town we notice a sign for a strip tease show. In line for a little entertainment we step inside only to find RUSS CLARKSON the owner. He has imported several Indian lovelies in DON CONNER C6 ft., 6 inches in his doeskin moccasinsb and petite JIM BECKWITH. These sweet ladies cavort about the stage and hold the audience spellbound with their graceful dancing. The main customer of Russ's fine show is HARRY ZIEL who has a front row seat reserved especially for himself. He can be seen there twenty-four hours a day with a lifeless expression on his even more lifeless face, BILL HUTCHISON works in this establishment selling chocolate bars, while BOB KRAMER will sell you Qfor only one thin dimej a set of dice which when held up to a light reveal a young lady, quite undraped and unadorned. Moving onward from Chicago we board a stagecoach and begin our bouncy ride West. We find DON THE SHLANG' KNUDSEN at the reins and we really sail along. I guess he must have hopped up the horses. We next stop at the Mississippi to water down our horses. Aha, who is this-it's our old school chum and Fishing Club president KEN NIEMANN. This ace angler appears to have a big fish on the end of his line-yes-it's TROUT Mcf WILLIAMS squirming on the end of a hook. On our way once more we begin to cross the open desert country. O-OH, what is this cloud of dust rising on the horizon? As it grows larger we see it is the terror of the plains, BLACK ANC1US SCOTT and his marauding band of renegades. One of his bloodthirsty accomplices is MAD PHIL DAUM whose savage scalp taking has won him much acclaim in Indian circles. After being robbed and brutally beaten, we were allowed to continue on to Death Gulch, a hole if I ever saw one. The Hrst place we visit in Death Gulch is the undertaking establishment of LIFE-IN-DEATH MORTON. True to his name, Jim, when business lags, stretches out and doubles as a corpse. For local entertainment, RON ROSENBACH and CHUCK SEYMOUR have worked up a catchy side show routine in which Chuck snaps off Ron's tiny toes with a whip. So far Ron has lost over 4,000 toes but he seems quite unconcerned. The next building we see is Shaky Dork's Dive a saloon owned by BOB MUNROE. Inside we hear laughter and music, so, all morals tossed aside, we venture slowly in, only to lay our eyes on the luscious curves of CONNIE NAGEL, doing the bumps and grinds on the dimly lit floor. In one corner we see DEADPAN CHARLIE CHRISTLER beating out chopsticks on Aa piano, while on the other side of the room we spot STAG WENTLEY twirling his long, black, greasy moustache and proudly displaying to the awed crowd his debating gavel. Moving over for a little lemonade at the bar, friendly bar- keep BOB GATTER slips us the hot tip that DAVE BUCHER and RAY EMERY battled to death as Bucher, in search of fresh meat mistakenly took Emery for a hippopotamus and attacked him. After being driven from town at the point of STEVE TOWNSEND'S test tube, filled with a mysterious explosive which he threatened to drop, we pass by BUMPKIN BOB HARTSOCK'S one-room shack and vegetable gar- den. Domestic Bob, unable to cope with city life, has retired to lead a hermit's life. Arriving at our last stop of the long trek across the land, a rough and ready mining camp, we drop in on JERRY WILKOFF who models the latest mining camp clothes, a double-breasted grey suit and patent leather shoes. He shows us around. We watch JAY FREDETTE, whose loud voice made him perfect for a hog-caller's job. At 5:15 every evening Humbert bellows in his raspy tones, and all the pigs come rushing in. From here, live hardy souls set out a little farther into the wilderness. However, three of the pilgrims, AL SMITH, BILL ISALY, and McGINTY LYNCH married natives and now spend all their time running barefoot through the woods and up and down the streams. They get extreme pleasure in annoying DON FOSTER and KARL KRIEGER, two hard-working persevering prospectors, who try and earn a living for all. The broad Pacilic looms in front of us: let's take the first boat to Pago Pago and get away from it all. D. FOSTER K. KRIEGER i. The probable reason for this is that the time of meeting has been changed from Tuesday to Thursday and lengthened to in clude the D.S. period allowing varsity members as well as lower formers to participate. During the academic year, the club has made possible two exhibits, one in the fall of Hshing prints: and one at commencement time of student work. WALTER JONES, JR. . ,.,,.,,, -.,,,,,,,As.sl'stant Coach At the start of the '49 season Dr. Baker, coaching his third consecutive year at Shady Side, faced the task of defending an inter- state championship with a handful of inex- perienced midgets. It was impossible to mold a team of champions, but he did build a team which became a credit to both his coaching ability and Shady Side spirit. The Blue and Gold eleven did earn the distinc- tion of winning a football game 58-0, a score unequalled in the last seven years of Shady Side football, and finished a tough season with two wins and six losses. X Dk Pk SSA.: 6- Brentwood: 19 On Saturday night, Septem- ber 25, Shady Side opened their third season under the guidance of Dr. Baker, with a large and speedy Brentwood team. Although after Heymann had scored from the seven yard line to make the score 12-6, the Indians were not able to stop the hard-running Brentwood backs. Even though Shady Side fought with everything they had, they were not able to stem the tide and turn the game into victory. Pk if Sk if S.S.A.: Oiperryz 13 Playing their first home game on Friday, October l, Shady Side lost their second game to Perry High. The Indians, playing very sloppy football, allowed their opponents to score on two long runs: whereas the Blue and Gold offense never started to click. The big Perry line and fast backs seemed to be just too much for our boys to overcome. ek elf ek bk S.S.A.: O-Penn High: 21 Playing again at Shady Side on Friday, October 8, the gridders dropped their third game to one of the best teams which they played all season. A driving rain and cold weather made the going tough all day, but the rugged Penn backs made it even tougher. The Indians played their best game of the season so far with their defense sparkling: but again it was the offensive attack which proved to be our downfall. S.S.A.: 2-University School: 34 Traveling to Cleveland on Saturday, Octo- ber 16, Shady Side met University School, another very strong aggregation. Again it was a frightful day with a strong rain, but this did not seem to hinder U. S. After a slow start, the red and black ran all over Shady Side with the Blue and Gold scoring their only points in the last quarter when Don Foster tackled a U. S. player behind the U. S. goal line. This was the first league game, giving S.S.A. their Hrst defeat and Uni- versity, the champions-to-be, their first vic- tory. Dk 21 Pk all S.S.A.: 7-Western Reserve: 28 Saturday, October 23, saw Western Re- serve playing at Shady Side in the Annual Alumni Homecoming Day game. It was a beautiful day, and a large crowd witnessed the contest. Shady Side tied the game in the second quarter when Phil Heymann Went off- tackle from the six-yard line. Jack Warden added the extra point and it was 7-7 at half- time. In the second half the Reserve power started to Work and before S.S.A. knew what had happened, Reserve had scored three times. This was the Indians second league loss and a bitter one to take. ak lk 41 lk S.S.A.: 58-Washington Twp.: O The S.S.A. gridders won their first victory by swamping Washington Twp. at Shady Side on Friday, October 29. The Red and White offered little or no opposition for the Indians, and almost everyone of our backs scored on almost every play used. After scor- ing the first touchdown in the early minutes, the gridders, filled with fight and spirit, scored as much as they pleased whenever they wished. S.S.A.: 6-Cranbrook: 7 Cranbrook School gave S.S.A. their third league loss at Shady Side on Saturday, No- vember 6. It was a hard game for Shady Side to lose, but a game which could have gone either way. The Blue and Gold offense started off very quickly and pushed the Cranes all over the field. Jim Pangburn gave S.S.A. the lead in the third quarter with a 'ibootleg play from about the five-yard line. The ex- tra point try was missed, but S.S.A. led 6-0. In the fourth quarter the Indians seemed to fold up, and Cranbrook scored on a flat pass from the two, and added the extra point to give them the victory. lk Pk Pk is S.S.A.: 13-Nichols: O In the last game of the season on Saturday, November 13, at Nichols School, Shady Side gained their second win of the year and their first league Win. The weather was terrible with snow, sleet, rain, and plenty of mud. Shady Side had the advantage all through the game with Jim Pangburn scoring on a quarterback sneak and John McCague on a sixty-yard run. Much of the credit for that victory must be given to fullback Bob Munroe, who continually repulsed the offensive threats of the Vocs. ln the first league game the Indians lost to University School by a narrow l-O margin. U. S. scored early in the second quarter, and although Shady Side hammered the goal, they were unable to put the ball through. The Blue and Gold then avenged defeats suffered at the hands of Western Reserve in previous years by handing them TM a 3-l setback. A 7-2 rout of Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf followed, with the Indian reserves playing most of the game. In their last contests the soc- cermen lost to Cranbrook and Nichols by scores of 4-l and 2-l respectively. At the end of the season Captain Smith and Captain-Elect Reed, who was also high scorer, were voted most valuable by their teammates while Bob Munroe attained the honor of being the only member of the squad to make '4All-League. Brenneman, the Shady Side cross country team showed a marked improvement over last year's winless squad. Starting the season with only two returning lettermen, the har- riers fared better than expected mainly because of the unknown ability of several first year men. Surprisingly enough the lone victorious meet was the sole contest held away from home. Nevertheless, most Shady Siders realize the difficulty of running a two and one-quarter mile course and even admire the squad in its de- feats which can be justified in considerin the ualit d g q y an experience of the opponents. The Jonesmen next defeated West View 55-35, Co-captain Warden scoring 20 points in this encounter. In a return match with Shaler the Indians dropped a 37-30 decision. RICHARD H. BRENNEMAN-. .- . c .... .. Coach Coached by Mr. Richard H. Brenneman and captained by Wayland W. Bowser, the Shady Side matmen Hnished one of their most successful seasons in recent years, gaining nine wins while dropping only two and tying one. The tie came at the hands of University School resulting in a draw for Hrst place in the lnter-State Prepartory League competition. The 1948-'49 wrestling season opened strongly on January ll as Shady Side defeated Dormont by a score of 22-15. January 14 saw Shady Side van- quish a weak Shaler High aggregation 32-6. The following two matches on January 18 and 21 fulfilled everyone's highest expectations as the grapplers downed West View 30-8 and Shaler, in a return match, 29-9. After the mid- year exams, Shady Side continued in the win column by defeating Munhall on February 1, 23-15, Cranbrook School, in the team's Hrst league encounter, on February 5, 30-8, and on February 8, Dormont, in a repeat contest. However, as the old saying goes, You can't win 'em all, and on February ll, S.S.A. dropped its first contest to a powerful Farrell team 23-15, The lndians bounced back, though on February 19, in their second league match, and they whipped Western Reserve 27-12. February 22, the matmen suf- fered their second defeat of the season to a previously beaten Munhall aggregation by a score of 14-25. The final encounter of the year March 5, found S.S.A. pitted against a strong University School team for the lnter- State Prep League championship. The contest, a thriller all the way, ended in a 17-17 draw and a two-way tie for the League championship. Lettermen: Wayland W. Bowser, Captain: Richard S. Cuda, D. Donald Foster. Manager: John W. There are commercial Bituminous coal deposits in thirty-two states of the United States extending from Pennsylvania in the East to Washington in the West and these coals are divided into several classifications, such was Semi-Bituminous, Bituminous. Sub-Bituminous and Lignite. Geologists estimate the coal reserves of the United States to exceed three trillion five hundred billion tons, not all of which. of course. can be economically recovered, but the estimate of recoverable coal based on the present annual rate of consumption should be sufficient to last two thousand years.
