Last summer, on July 19, Hawthorne Dill Battle, Jr., '48 was the victim of a fatal automobile accident, To all of us who received the news it seemed an unbelievable tragedy, Any words of grief or praise that we might say are indeed inadequate: but to his memory, We, the class of 1948, dedicate this page in our Academian. We were proud to call him our classmate and friend.

Always a joyful occasion is the celebration, in retrospect, of service well- performed. Shady Side has the good fortune to witness such an occasion this year when Mr. Merle M. Alexander completes his first three decades of teaching at the Academy. During this time Mr. Alexander has contributed to the school not only in the classroom as physics instructor and head of the science department, but also as a prominent figure in campus life. Lively and interesting conversation at his dining-hall table has made sitting there a pleasure. Connected with the administration of discipline throughout his long afiliation with the Academy, Mr. Alexander has been Dean for much of this time. His procedure is quite simple: it is what a Dean's should be: kind admonititions at first, then sterner warnings, and, finally, more forceful measures when necessary. This friendly yet iirm spirit, characteristic of Dean Alexander, is the first requirement for mutual understanding between faculty and student body in any school. To the man and to his spirit this Academian is dedicated.

FCDREWORD This Academian is the record of an interesting year in the life of a boys' school. The Class of l948 is a colorful one, including some excellent scholars, Writers, editors, athletes, actors, electricians, singers, pianists, clarinet-players, dancers, and heart-breakers. There are also some good public speakers and facile conversationalists. There are some who worked hard, and some who took it too easy for their own good. There are some who were in the groove, and others who displayed interesting and occosionally troublesome deviations. But they are all Shady Side boys who will, as graduates, hold a place in our affec- tions and memories. It is, in a way, sad to see each class graduate when its hour comes. We will miss the Class of 1948. We have lived and worked with these boys: we have broken bread with them: we have been proud of them and cheered them on: we have worried about their problems. We will follow their future careers with consuming interest, and will welcome them back with open arms when- ever they return to see us. The graduates will treasure this book as the story of their school days, with especial emphasis on the last year. Their wives and children and grand' children will turn to this volume with interest and, in some cases, with pride and amusements. And those of us who remain behind will have available, in these pages, a sure method of recalling a memorable and interesting year. We wish the Class of 1948 God-speed and the best of everything.
