McCullough, I Always a joyful occasion is the celebration, in retrospect, of service well- performed. Shady Side has the good fortune to witness such an occasion this year when Mr. Merle M. Alexander completes his first three decades of teaching at the Academy. During this time Mr. Alexander has contributed to the school not only in the classroom as physics instructor and head of the science department, but also as a prominent figure in campus life. Lively and interesting conversation at his dining-hall table has made sitting there a pleasure. Connected with the administration of discipline throughout his long afiliation with the Academy, Mr. Alexander has been Dean for much of this time. His procedure is quite simple: it is what a Dean's should be: kind admonititions at first, then sterner warnings, and, finally, more forceful measures when necessary. This friendly yet iirm spirit, characteristic of Dean Alexander, is the first requirement for mutual understanding between faculty and student body in any school. To the man and to his spirit this Academian is dedicated. Zin jllllemnriam l 1 WWW, HAWTHORNE DILL BATTLE, JR. Last summer, on July 19, Hawthorne Dill Battle, Jr., '48 was the victim of a fatal automobile accident, To all of us who received the news it seemed an unbelievable tragedy, Any words of grief or praise that we might say are indeed inadequate: but to his memory, We, the class of 1948, dedicate this page in our Academian. We were proud to call him our classmate and friend. FCDREWORD This Academian is the record of an interesting year in the life of a boys' school. The Class of l948 is a colorful one, including some excellent scholars, Writers, editors, athletes, actors, electricians, singers, pianists, clarinet-players, dancers, and heart-breakers. There are also some good public speakers and facile conversationalists. There are some who worked hard, and some who took it too easy for their own good. There are some who were in the groove, and others who displayed interesting and occosionally troublesome deviations. But they are all Shady Side boys who will, as graduates, hold a place in our affec- tions and memories. It is, in a way, sad to see each class graduate when its hour comes. We will miss the Class of 1948. We have lived and worked with these boys: we have broken bread with them: we have been proud of them and cheered them on: we have worried about their problems. We will follow their future careers with consuming interest, and will welcome them back with open arms when- ever they return to see us. The graduates will treasure this book as the story of their school days, with especial emphasis on the last year. Their wives and children and grand' children will turn to this volume with interest and, in some cases, with pride and amusements. And those of us who remain behind will have available, in these pages, a sure method of recalling a memorable and interesting year. We wish the Class of 1948 God-speed and the best of everything. Her fortune-telling, banned in Boston, was the whispered sensation of Pittsburgh society. Almost consumed with curiosity, I decided to visit her and test her widely acclaimed occult powers. But what would I ask her? What would be the most diflicult query ever posed? M-ni-m-m-m-m-m . . . Ah ha . . . I would ask her: What has become of my former schoolmates at Shady Side: the class of '48, the purest most virtuous group of scholars ever assembled under one roof? I-Ia! exclaimed the mysterious and shapely Madame B from behind her Hlmy silken veil. Cross my palm. Reluctantly but resignedly I withdrew two dog-eared tired-looking dollars from my wallet and slipped them into her hand. Her large brown eyes were translixed on the crystal ball in front of herg larger and larger they grew, while a deep Hush crept over her face. Wowie, she suddenly screamed in delight, Take back the two bucks: this is better than that old S.S.A. favorite, Forever Erminrrudef' What do you see? What do you see? I see a noisy, glowing cabaret on Center Avenue near Craig Street. JOHN COHEN'S band featuring John on the liquid sax, is beating out a rag-time tune. DON MOORE, suave but black-hearted Lothario, is cavorting on the dance floor, while SENATOR ALKY BOOTH with his nose floating serenely in a tall glass like a pink water lily, is unloading his woes on bartender ANDY QUINN. Gay blade BILL GARDNER is becoming quite rowdy, pinching chorus girls, etc., and bouncer PHIL SPIEGELMAN is throwing him out. MALCOLM GRAPE, romantic crooner, has just risen to the microphone to sing, his stunning Russian Mink bow tie glistening in the spotlights. Mal's only serious rival in the crooning world, ONE-NOTE STOTZ, has just re- corded the stirring Lower Slobbovian national anthem. Whoops, what's happened? Little John has fallen through the band- stand. Quick, a doctor! Ah, here comes that eminent surgeon, DR. GLENN DUNMIRE, one of the fastest operators in town. With him is his equally renowned colleague, DR. HENRY EAKIN, who won the Pillitzer prize for his discovery of a cure to that old Fox Chapel malady, Ellisitis. Their last case, CARL HERRMANN, owner of Herrmann the Hairy Furrier's was the victim of a crash, wrecking his light blue Studeflyed while buzzing Fox Chapel at a low altitude. JACK KERR has become president of the Buick Motorcar Corporation. One of his chief test drivers is WILD BILL WOELEEL, Winner of the In- dianapolis Speedway classic: the other is CHEVY CRUSHER EGAN, who also works part time as a comedian at the Bijou Theatre, owned and operated by cigar-chewing, underworld character, GIG VOIGT. Having come to the place in search of knowledge, HONOR ROLL KIMBALL, possessor of an accredited B.S. degree, and his teacher, PROFESSOR WILL CURTIS, on viewing BILL SANDER'S risque performance, were thoroughly shocked and ran home. However, they were consoled by their old friend, UNCLE BUD MAERKER, who is the writer of an advice-to-the-lovelorn column in CARI, RIECK'S left wing paper, The Daily Shirker. On the sports page of Carl's paper is a large photograph of DICK PIVI- ROTTO and BRUCE HILL, finally reaching the apex of their athletic careers by capturing the laurels in the doubles harmonica-playing-tidlee-winks-and-V thumb-twiddling tournament at promoter BILL FRIED'S stadium last night. Bill, believe it or not, started out as a hot dog salesman. LOUIS MYERS. Peanut salesman, has been inspired by his example and only a few days ago began taking small bets. Tomorrow night, BEAR-HUG BRUNO HERRON and STRANGLER SAMPLE will grapple for the wrestling championship of Pittsburgh: Bear- Hug Bruno's hair-pulling title is at stake. Referee VERN WILSON, who says he has no idea how the match will turn out, placed a substantial wager with Louis only yesterday. In the meantime. BILL STITT, RAJAH JEWETT, and WILLY NEUENSCHWANDER are battling furiously in the national open African Golf tourney being held in a shady corner of SMILING JIM ECKER'S used car lot. As a sideline, Smiling Jim runs a three-ring circus at his lot. There, for only twenty-five cents, one can see the famous trapeze artist, HAL MITCHELL, STU SHORE and his bevy of Hollywood beauties. and that petite, lovely tight rope walker, BUBBLES CROOK. GINGER SNYDERMAN, the modern Houdini, was a featured act until he made him- self disappear permanently in a cloud of monkey smoke. Rumors say that he was fleeing from that cruel loan shark, SANDY GOLDSTEIN. What's that commotion out in front of the circus? Oh my barker BILL BOGGS just caught SPIKE BLACKBURN and LUSH BRUSH tring to sneak in under the tent flap. Here comes the paddy wagon, driven by ALPI-IONSE MCCLURE. De- tectives JACK VOIGT and DICK HALL are arresting . . . no, it can't be . . . yes . . . oh . . , BOSS CORSON, mayor of Boston, who holds a strict monopoly on the baked beanbbusiness. 'Several hundred yards down the road from this mess is that humanitarian institution, DADDY WILL EWART'S Rest Home for Wayward Bus-drivers. Will is bemoaning the loss of his old friends, CAPTAIN JOE BYERLY and his first mate, CHARLIE DINKEY, who are missing after a fierce Lake Chau- tauqua storm. P. D. LYNE also met with misfortune. He was mortally wounded, it seems, while moose-hunting in the wilds of East End. 'And that is what has happened to your classmates in the past fifteen years. Madame B, you're wonderful, I sighed. Why, you're all you claimed to be, and more, but . . . but haven't you forgotten JIM BOERINGERV' Oh no, she said, and with a very unladylike gesture, she ripped off her veil. Half-paralyzed with surprise, I finally managed to gasp, Jim, what in l1eaven's name are you doing here? I 'Well, after three consecutive successes in the Gargoyle plays at Shady Side as a woman, I began to realize my hidden talent. Ever since then I have been capitalizing on it. I'll be darned, I said, and with a mighty bound on my pogo stick I continued on my happy way. Although the results of the meets, mathematically speaking, are poor indeed, our pride in our team is certainly justified when we consider the quality and experience of our opponents and the fact that this was our nrst year of competition in this field. Walter Jones and captained by Dick Pivirotto, the Blue and Gold Cagers showed a record of eleven wins and eight setbacks. In the Interstate Preparatory League competition the Jones' men placed second with their only lose at the hands of a powerful Cranbrook team. The inex- perienced Indian team lost the first three games of the season to Allegheny Vocational, 30-293 Har-Brack, 55-41: and Neville Township, 40-37. The cagers opened the New Year with a victory over West Deer, 37-32. The Shady Side quintet moved to an impressive victory over the Alumni, 39-8, and fol- lowed with a victory over W.P.S.D., 46-36. I-Iampered by a small floor the Indians dropped their next contest to Springdale, 62-39. The Blue and Gold next won two hardly contested games from highly touted Bethel Township and Perry by 42-38 and 39-37, respectively. The cagers avenged their earlier defeat at the hands of I-lar-Brack in a thriller, 37-36. In the Hrst League encounter, Cranbrook visited the Academy to defeat the Indians in a hard-fought contest, 29-27. After beating West View 41-39, the Blue and Gold travelled to Buffalo to top Nichols 41-34. Springdale, a W.P.I.A.L. section leader, again proved too tough for the Indians, defeating them again, 31-24. The Jones' men played their best game of the season when they beat a strong team from Western Reserve, in the third League contest, 51-37. The Shady Side quintet lost their next two encounters to strong Central Catholic and fast Linsly Military, 33-21 and 36-35. In the Hnal district encounter of the season, the netters easily topped West Deer 39-26. The Blue and Gold Cagers closed the season with an impressive League victory over University School of Cleveland, 31-30. Lettermenz Richard R. Pivirotto, Captain: Hilary G. Lynch: Don R. DICK MAsoN, JR., L .Coach The Indian matmen, coached for the first year by Mr. Dick Mason and captained by John Byerly, completed a very successful season by winning six matches, losing four, and tying one. In League competition, the grapplers won two out of three, thus placing second in the Interstate Preparatory School league. The opening match of the season saw Shady Side blank an inexperienced Shaler High team by a convincing 13-0 score on the home mat. On the follow- ing Tuesday, West View edged out the Indians 8-6 in a very close and exciting match. Unable to hit their stride, the Blue and Gold dropped the next two matches to Munhall, 7-5, and to Dormont, 9-2. In the return engagement with West View the Academy matmen began to show some form and improve- ment as they secured a hard fought 6-6 tie. Then on the next Saturday they handed Cranbrook a 25-7 shellacking in the first League contest of the season. At home the next Friday, the grapplers eked out a close 6-5 decision over Munhall: the fourth victory of the season came at the expense of Shaler High, 10-2. On the home floor, Western Reserve met with disastrous defeat as Shady Side racked up an overwhelming 0-8 victory. The matmen hit the peak of their season when they topped Dormont 6-5. The final match of the year saw Shady Side and University School, both un- defeated in the League, tangle for the League Cham- pionship, Shady Side lost, 24-11, taking second in the League.
