LOWELL INNES For the past twenty-seven years Mr. Innes has been an outstanding member of the English department. From behind the scarred oak desk in Room 10, littered with assorted text- books and theme papers, one can always expect sound advice and reasonable deduction to burst forth. Mr. Innes' friendly good humor and discreet judgment are ever-present in his deal- ings with the students of the school. As Assistant Headmaster he handles administrative problems and difficulties which arise every year in the senior class concerning choice of college. He takes a personal interest in all his work with the boys, and those who have been in his classes realize the thoroughness of his teaching. We, the Class of 1947, in part payment for the debt of gratitude we owe to Mr. lnnes, respectfully dedicate this volume of the Academian to him. Zin fliilemnriam GEORGE BATON SCI-IEETZ When George Scheetz's funeral service was held in the Shadyside Presbyterian Church last fall, over one-third of our entire student body was present to do him honor and to cele- brate his memory. Our class suffered an irreparable loss in his passing. In spite of handicaps he made a great contribution to Shady Side. His cheerfulness and courage were evident in every- thing he did. He was vitally interested in the Academy and made many friends among the boys and masters, but he was also very much concerned about the wider community and the more pressing problems of the world. He had a knowledge of history and a grasp of current affairs remarkable in a boy of his age. His memory will never fade. Not only will those who knew him personally derive inspiration from his life, but others who hear his story will be encouraged by his fortitude. His family has established a scholarship at the Academy in his name. lt will be an honor for a student to receive that scholarship, for George summed up in his life so many of the qualities which this school needs, and for which our troubled world is waiting. jlggiulty Qff ,J c K rg, fr!! .1-N, f 1 ff K WN-I1 fl 0 1 51 QQ 433 K f 5' Y i Y Jf, 'w r N I i , 5 ' ww X X Q' Q V M DR. J fffrmrrfrrrfrrfrrrrrrfrrrrmx X kjifg CLASS PROPHECY THERE'S A DARK DAY IN EVERY DOG'S LIFE Shortly after the Class of 1947 graduated from Shady Side the reknowned tycoon of the Tuck Shop, Mr. C. P. Shriver, retired from the field of teaching and opened a pawn shop in downtown Pittsburgh. Because of the connections which he made while at school, a great many of his former students patronized him. Sad indeed was the day when Pawnbroker Shriver fell asleep behind the counter with a cigarette in his hand. The cigarette fell from his hand and started a very serious fire from which many objects were saved. Carl Adelsheim's American history notes, which he pawned for a dime to buy a cup of coffee during the depression in the late fifties, were saved from destruction. Also saved was the gold medal which Sam Aronson won and pawned shortly after he graduated from Shady Side when he won the Mr. America contest of 1950. No less important is the seventeen jewel watch that Bill Askin's wife pr:- sented to him on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. It seems Bill pawned it because he is never on time anyway. Another article bravely rescued from the flames turned out to be an excuse from athletics which was actually carried by that renowned philosophical poet Seavey Austen during his prep-school days. A negative which Larry Autenreith used to blackmail a prominent citizen was among the priceless antiques. Larry is now serving twenty years at Sing Sing. The negative was Exhibit A. Strangler Baker, the world's featherbrain wrestling champion, pawned his diamond-studded brass knuckles to make a down payment on a chateau on the French Riviera. The death notices of all Jim Balph's medical cases, priceless because no other doctor has ever achieved such a low percentage of surviving patients, were saved and placed in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C. Jim Berry's collection of public speeches, proclaimed immortal by a com- mittee headed by Mr. Arlin Cook, also were retrieved without injury. The pictures of Pete Bolanis' twenty-two wives were rescued along with Larry Brent's original rule book for international baseball. It has been said that both boys' motto is, Play the field. The manuscript of Jack Burrey's autobiography was snatched from danger by a shapely feminine onlooker. Jack, who became the Rudolph Valentino of the Post-Atomic Age, has dyed his crimson locks green and retired to Sherwood Forest to escape his fans. The Missing Persons Bureau report on George Caplan, which was pawned by District Attorney Steve Cohen when he was put out of work by the Repub- lican victory in 1958, was saved and preserved for posterity in the F.B.I. Building. George was last seen on November 15, 1946, heading for the in- firmary on his non-skid crutches. Joe Coney's collection of original puns, proclaimed the easiest jokes in the world to understand ,were carried to safety by Gene Connelly, recently chosen the world's Man of Distinction. The photographs of famous celebrities taken from the walls of Casey Cosgroves' night club 'Open House and pawned when the mortgage was foreclosed were also removed by firemen. CLASS PROPHECY-Continued Jim Creps, the political boss of Indiana County, Pennsylvania, pawned his 24-carat diamond stickpin to back his candidate in a local election. The stickpin was hastened from the blazing inferno because it has a definite signi- ficance. That pin has given more candidates a lift than any other now in existence. ' A special effort was made to get Dave Curry's book, My Theory On Life. For the last ten years this famous authority on the Freudian theory has been touring the world in a campaign strongly favoring Freud and his principles. Brownie Dickey, the clerk at the pawnshop, perished in the flames. lt was rumored that the fire was started by his fireproof cigar lighter. Chick Evans made a valiant effort to save Brownie, because he still owned the money for a Musical Clubs Skating Party ticket. The gold trophy presented to John Exline, the foremost authority on education in the world, was removed from the fire only a little scorched. The cup was pawned by Fred Fair for an unknown reason after he had good luck with John in some sort of African game. A life-size portrait of the Great Philanthropistf' Dave Feldstein, was dragged from the fire with great difficulty by four hosemen. Bill Fuellhart's silk bathing suit, which he pawned when he discovered his ability to wade, was slightly blackened by the smoke, but was otherwise unharmed. The first edition of Gus Gilfillan's book. Physics and Its Relationship to Man, or Alley Oop's Progress, was carried to safety by the famous detective, the Thin Man, who is none other than spry old Jim Graham. Jim Hardie, the accountant in the shop, disappeared shortly after the fire. Strangely enough, so did two solid gold vases which previously belonged to the estate of T. J. Hartland, prominent steel magnate. Tom pawned most of his valuables when he went out West to wed a blue-eyed gal from Sioux City. Joe Hilbish, who retired to his New York farm in 1960 after making his first million, finally pawned in 1961 the 1941 Packard to which he was so inseparably attached for twenty years. The fire chief decided to let it burn. The paint brushes and paints which the well-known artist Fred Hill pawned when times were bad were saved from destruction by Jerry Humphreys. who decided that his Ford needed a new coat of enamel. A portable typewriter that Arch Irvin pawned after he was fired from his job as men's editor for Vogue magazine was carried to safety by one of his local feminine admirers. Charlie Jackson pawned his petite little bow tie to help buy supplies for his expedition to the South Pole. The purpose of the expedition was to see if penguins slide down glaciers on their stomachs or southern extremities. Among the charred fabric remains was found a small piece of rare cloth from one of Hugh Johnston's famous suits. This suit, which was valued at six hundred dollars because of its rare South American spider web material. was cast aside by Hugh soon after he was named America's Best Dressed Gentleman. A representation of the Lost Weekend won for Bruce Kauffman the 1969 Oscar award. Because Bruce was so conscientious in his portrayal of the sop, he pawned the statue for a check for a short beer. Reverend Arthur Kinsolving flew in from his mission at the North Pole to console Mr. Shriver on his loss. His mission had recently received great will 1 1 CLASS PROPHECY-Continued applause from the world for having changed the Eskimo's greeting sign from rubbing noses to shaking hands. With the arrival of the trip to the moon and back before you can say 'xlckmbs', Dr. Frederick Lind, L.L.D., D.D.T., P,D.Q., has definitely decided that there is a faster moving vehicle than Mike's bus. At the last minute, war with Lower Slovobia has been averted by the brilliant diplomacy of West Point's favorite son, General Willy Two Gun Lowe. Both pearlhandled pistols which were pawned by Bill for a bottle of peroxide were found under a heap of ashes. ln his fireside speech, America's youngest president, Dave Lowry, termed the fire as the year's biggest home-front disaster. A ball and chain that once held Sluggo Who Dunnit Lissfelt were found uninjured. These were pawned by the Federal Penitentiary after Sluggo had escaped for the eighth time. A nation-wide search is on for the notorious thief alias the little man who isn't there, who is charged with having stolen ninety-four lollipops from little babies. One of the most valued pieces of jewelry lost in the fire was George McCullough's Shady Side class ring. An extensive and thorough search is being made for the ring which George was forced to pawn when four different girls laid claim to it. Blackened but not damaged was the frame which contained the first dollar that Bookie McSorley ever earned. He was very concerned over its where- abouts, because it is also the only one he ever earned. Boogie Beat Morris, famous leader of the Charley Horse Trio, dug.up the remains of his plastic unbreakable comb on which he started his musical career. After lighting his cigar stub on one of the still-smouldering ashes, Jeep Morrison put down his hobo pack and said, Why the B. ii O. Railroad has the most comfortable rooves in the United States. A gold bracelet that used to belong to John O'Brien escaped uninjured from the flames. It seems that John pawned it to get enough money to buy a ticket to Arabia, for he was not satisfied with an accepted American custom. namely one wife. Four-times married William Overly let it slip out while watching the fire that he plans to marry again this month. It seems that this businessman is working hard to win all the trivial bets he made in his schooling days. Having a front page column with the fire scoop was an article about Taylor Overpeck. For the third time in the last month he has amazed a draw- ing room by twitching off a lady's shoe and ejaculating passages from Shakes- peare. Bill Patterson is still making good use of his sturdy track legs. He has been chasing Mr. Shriver with a Western Union telegram since the fire started. The insurance company's investigator, Richard Patton, said that the fire was undoubtedly started by spontaneous combustion. The basis for his belief lies in the fact that he found a few charred pages of Forever Amber. The engraved gold cup given to Guy Pietz at Shady Side for his milk drinking championship has not yet been recovered from the debris. Guy was forced to pawn it after his cows objected to its being in the household. When the news of the fire reached Charley Prichard, owner of Me Gypem, Inc., he just gloated and said, Maybe he'll buy one of my imported New York ties now. CLASS PROPHECY-Continued The janitor was able to rescue Bayard Rea's scrap book from the flames. Since leaving Shady Side, Bayard has spent his time making scrapbooks at Mayview by pasting heads of his fellow associates onto bodies in magazines. Dr. Einstein Rosenbach used this fire to prove his new theory that flames burn inversely proportional to the cube of the distance from the point of the fire to the nuclear center of the Cassiopeian constellation. A set of the Encyclopedia Brittanica which was pawned by Ken Ryan was completely destroyed. These books were hocked when Ken found out that to be a success in life you don't have to have an education, you just have to do what comes naturally. A solid oak sign which almost put undertaker Paul Shroads out of busi- ness was turned into a heap of ashes. Paul was put in jail when police found the sign in front of his parlor. It read, Free Pick-ups and Delivery. The on-the-spot reporter for the Daily Splash, Carroll Sinclair, used up three pencils in writing an editorial on the fire. It was one of his so-called shorter dissertations called How God Rids Manhood in Mysterious Ways. All of Ray Swoish's Shady Side text books which he pawned after his graduation in 1950 were never found after the blaze had been put out. A blackened pair of scissors were recovered by the firemen. They use to belong to John Thayer: but after he got his G.I. haircut at Shady Side, he had no use for them. Why? No hair. A red tie, a red and black sock, and a pledge book that use to belong to Neil Thomas were saved from destruction. His reasons for pawning them were . . . CENSORED. A collection of different restaurants' silverware which was found in the shop was handed over to the local police. It is rumored that this set once belonged to unfortunate Winks Voigt, who at present is serving a term of ten years as head of the history department at Shady Side. Coming to the aid of Mr. Shriver in his fight against the insurance com- pany, Dave Willey stated that he would base his arguments on one point. Since his prep-school days Dave has been considered the best one-point disputer in the nation. Special recognition for exceptional bravery was received by Bill Woodwell. who chopped through the back entrance to save a great deal of the merchandise. His ability to perform this act is accredited to the fact that he can chop Wood Well. Some burned political leaflets that aided Bud Wright in his campaign for dogcatcher were uncovered. The slogan on the leaflets was You can't go wrong with Wright. One of the most welcome gifts that has ever been sent to this weary world is Bob Young. For this young man makes it possible for this non-sensible conglomeration of meaningless presentational declarations to arrive at its ter- mination. Curry, the Shady Side gridders, using the tricky T-formation for the first time, came through a tough seven-game schedule with a satisfactory record of four wins and three losses. Competition in the Interstate Prep League was resumed after a three-year layoff, and the Blue and Gold won three league games while losing one to end up in second place. A , .,,,-,,,Asszstant Coach S.S.A.: 6-Perry: 13 Opening the season at home on Friday, September 27, the Indians outgained their opponents by a wide margin only to lose the game on costly fumbles. Dick Pivirotto, Blue and Gold halfback, received an arm in- jury in the first period which kept him out of action for the remainder of the season. Sluggo Lissfelt tallied the only Shady Side touch- down on a 14-yard run. S.S.A.: 6-Linsly: 19 Playing away at Wheeling, West Virginia on Saturday, October 5, the gridders lost their second straight contest to Lin- sly Military Institute. After the enemy had taken an early first half lead, the Indians scored their touchdown on a 56-yard sustained drive. Racking up four consecutive first downs, Shady Side tallied with Bill Patterson crashing off tackle from the one foot line. if 211 254 214 if S.S.A.: 26-Cranbrook: 0 Playing in a driving rain the following Saturday, the Blue and Gold captured their first victory of the season and their first league win over Cranbrook School of Bloomfield I-Iills, Michi- gan. After having several long drives halted deep in Cranbrook territory, the Shady Side offense finally started rolling to push across four touchdowns. Patterson, Askin, McCullough, and Lowry scored for Shady Side with Askin's tally coming on a 60-yard run. ll! 'lf ll! Taking a 13-0 half time lead on touchdowns by Patterson and Askin the gridders went on to score two more tallies in the second half. Hill scored one of the touchdowns, and Patterson tallied his second of the afternoon. Bell scored their line touchdown on a long pass late in the fourth quarter. Ik wk wk all vs S.S.A.: l2-University School: 7 On the Annual Homecoming Day the Blue and Gold defeated a big, rugged Uni- versity School eleven from Cleveland, Ohio in a hard fought game. With the game only a few minutes old, Bill Askin dashed 60 yards off tackle to score the first Shady Side touchdown. On the longest scoring play of the year, which proved to be the winning touchdown against U.S., Larry Brent chuck- ed a pass from the S.S.A. 20-yard line to Walt Lissfelt who went the rest of the way to score. A short bullet pass into the end zone in the fourth quarter gave U.S. their only score of the game. is ff in 4- wk S.S.A.: 25-Western Reserve: 12 On Saturday, November 2, at Hudson. Ohio, the Shady Siders made it three in a row over Prep League rivals when they romped over a stubborn Western Reserve eleven. Askin tallied two touchdowns on ll and 41-yard dashes, while Johnny O'Brien and Bruce Hill scored the other touchdowns on passes from Lissfelt and Bolanis, respect- ively. A pair of fast Reserve backs picked up quite a bit of yardage, but a hard-charging S.S.A. team plus frequent fumbles slowed up the enemy's offense. Reserve pushed across their two touchdowns late in the fourth period. if lk lk bk Bk S.S.A.: 6-Nicholas: 20 The following Saturday at Buffalo, N. Nichols drew first blood, scoring after a 35-yard drive, but Bill Askin evened up the score at 6-6 on a 28-yard dash. The powerful enemy proved too much, however. as they rolled up 14 points in the second Quarter on a 40-yard pass and a blocked kick. First evidence of a strong Indian entry was given by an open- ing 2-l non-league victory over University School, Mitchell and Vaux tallying for the winners. In the . - league curtain- ! raiser, Shady Side showed it meant business by taking a con- vincing 2-0 win from a scrappy C r a n b r o o k s q u a d with Gardner and Vaux doing the honors. Two weeks later, the leading Indian scorer, Hal Mit- chell, boosted the champion- ship hopes of a large Alumni Homecoming and Parents' Day crowd by booting a 20-foot goal to defeat University School, l-0. Moving away to Hudson, Ohio, however, Shady Side suffered her first league loss at the hands of champion Western Reserve by the score of 2-0, In a final bid for runner-up spot in the league race, the Indians traveled to Buffalo, N. Y., where they were greeted by a surprisingly strong Nichols aggregation. Opening with two quick goals in the first period, the Buffalo team gain- ed .inal possession of second place as it over- whelmed a fighting Shady Side squad, 4-0. In district games the Indians posted a two won and three lost record. After dropping a 3-0 contest to W.P.S.D. and losing a 2-0 game with Washington Vocational, the soc- cermen bounced back to tie the same Voca- tional team, 0-0 in seven quarters of brilliant ball-handling.
