Ovziku' Assistant Business Manager OVCZUOI' ow For the first time in four years, Shady Side graduates are stepping out into a World at peace but, nevertlfielessf a turbulent and uncertain World. Our duty is to aid in the Winning of the peace, as our armed forces helped to Win the war. lt is our prayer that we of the Class of 1946 may make our contribution to a greater unity and understanding among all nations. QQfliC'Clfi0 ll l MR. GEORGE BYRON WALDROP Mr. Waldrop has endeared himself to us in countless ways. We appreciate his eagerness to help boys outside the classroom as well as in it, his understanding and sympathetic interest in his students, not only while they are here, but after they leave. Mr. Waldrop has been here twenty-three years. The twinkle in his eye remains undimmed, the vigor in his step undiminished. He is our friend, and we of the Class of 1946 take pleasure in dedicating this volume of the Academian to him. vv , y -rr if 4 5255 1 1 , . It is a strange new world in which I find myself. Rendered unconscious when an innnitive I was splitting fiew up and struck me in the forehead, I spent twenty-five years in a state of coma, though I am told by family and friends that they noticed nothing different about me. The customs of this age are, indeed. foreign to me. The new cars have bumpers and hub caps, the Pirates and Phillies are fighting it out for the pennant, radio comedians no longer reminisce about vaudeville, only one Ingrid Bergman movie is in town. the President of the United States is a Republican. But l97l has a certain significance: it is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the mass expulsion of my class from Shady Side. Overflowing with nostalgia and not averse to borrowing a few fivers, I have resolved to look up my old comrades. BILL BOLANIS, having finally completed his education, is now pro- prietor of the Chez Bolo. a place of joy and merriment. He greets his old chums personally in the big room upstairs with the green baize tables. LESTER BOSS is fulfilling everyone's expectations by pursuing a scien- tific career. Working with the world-renowned Professor Alexander. he has become a leading authority on somnambulism and suspended animation. ED BROWN, healthiest American boy of 1946, holds several important jobs on the Parks' Commission. He does not pick wild flowers, keeps off the grass, and does not feed the animals. BILL CI-IESLEY is now paying alimony to wife No. 7. But in the face of it all, he remains his own cheerful self. At least. so I reflected after picking myself up from his front lawn. BILL COOK died in a heroic effort to save a Shady Side faculty member from drowning. After dragging the man to shore, he was lynched by an enraged citizenry. MARK COSGROVE has amassed a huge fortune as the head of a concern which manufacturers pin-stripe suits, bow ties, pearl gray spats, and chinchilla slipovers. I BILL DANFORTH surprised me by neither asking for money nor shout- ing PLEDGE. He is employed as the driver of a cunning little red and orange truck. HANK FERGUSON has dropped from sight but is assumed to be living happily with his wife and seventeen children. The name of canny TOM FERGUSON, the smiling Scotchman, has won wide renown. He is reputed to be the most astute used car dealer in the Tri- State District. DICK FRANKENSTEIN, monster of the wrestling mats, is in the third undefeated week of his exhibition wrestling contestants from the audience. Next week contestants UNDER 84 years of age will be admitted. JOHN FREEMAN fulfilled a lifelong ambition by going into missionary work. TED GALLUP got lost on the first week-end after school let out and hasn't been seen since. That erstwhile track star. BILL GAUSS. puts his powerful calf muscles to work walking the floors of a local department store. BILL HIRSHON leads a joyous secluded life in the Everglades, 1349.377 miles from Fox Chapel. He reports that in spite of diligent search, he has failed to locate anyone answering to the names of Chloe or Rima. SANDY HOON is surpassing Orson Welles by producing, directing, sell- ing tickets for, and playing both leading roles in the current spine-chiller, Sally Morgan Meets the Fireplace Fiend. mms LUKIH 'll IU IJUIUL U40 . , sms '47 fHOSEN BOOTERS Ilnntiiblflfrryljj:Ling!!!731213I Hz, ! 1 A 4,.,, , ,L hw, :,h.,,v 5 T K 'IVY 'Y 'A x 1 45-,nn 1 'QV .uw I., I, Ak ww' H vm' , Si 0 of '94 f, X f, 'li ' X v ul' ' ? 1ln,,, 'nf' fa, ll' WGN 1, ,,,. mf f 1',f-, Z'I 15311 1-HF SHAUYJJ-5 sms, NE K' K 3 Fm' , N- ww- f iQ5?,f .. , 5, ff -5:4 A 1 V axiom mmmm. PHIL HUSS, fascinated by concave and convex lenses, has gone into the optical business. His specialties are pocket periscopes. ED JEW'S quavering tenor voice is sending the teen-agers into raptures. GEORGE KECK and his Pagan style of dancing have sent Arthur Murray to the breadlines. JIM KENDALL, the poor man's Flip Phillips, and his terrific Chapel- on-the-Hilltop orchestra have been packing them in at the Club 21 in Blawnox. RALPH LYNCH, to everyone's relief, turned down the overtures of Jorge Pasquale and decided to stay in this country. Something snapped when DREW MATHIESON, despondent over the sudden demise of Dr. Sam Johnson, tried to interpret Green Candles. Now he is kept in a nice quiet room where he can scrawl cubic designs on the wall- paper to his heart's content. TOM MCCARTHY was always considered a diamond in the rough. In other words, he is a tilted square who has too much slice to lay the ball on the fairway. JIM McCLlSTER will give a concert at Carnegie Hall tomorrow after- noon-if he remembers to show up. PATRICK MCCURDY, whose sonnets finished off the Celtic Revival, is looking for a publisher for his latest work, How to be a Genius. BILL McKNIGHT hopes to get out of the army next year. Hailed into court for disturbing the peace, VOIGT MOONEY secured an acquittal by telling the jury he had served as prefect of Bayard House. Construction magnate DOM NAVARRO, builder of the huge new auto tunnels under Squaw Run, spends his vacations by working as Santa Claus in a department store. TOM OWENS was found in room 8, discussing with his idol the socio- economic effects of the Spanish-American War on Rooseveltian imperialism in relation to the New Freedom with regard to the Progressive movement as seen by the writers of that day. The PERRY Personal Dynamism Success Correspondence Course is causing thousands of people to look for new friends, new will power, and new jobs. ART PIVIROTTO just loves to drive through, between, over, across, and against traffic in the ZV2-ton truck that he drives. DON RAIT perished in his freshman year in college when, far from the supervision of Croft Hall's Hazel, a huge collection of soiled shirts, rhinestone garters, unmatched shoes, beer bottles, and unpaid bills piled in one corner of his room collapsed on him. BUD RIDINGER, business manager of both News and Academian, bought a country estate and retired for life immediately after graduation. ED RIECK fights disease, cures the sick, goes out on calls in the middle of the night, asking for no greater reward than the SlO0,000 in fees he collects annually. BILL RODEWALD, multilingual wrestler, is employed to see that certain people stay out and that certain others stay in at meetings of the UNO Security Council. JACK STEWART is probably the most famous of our classmates. His reputation has spread to every village, his name is on every tongue, and his picture is displayed in every post office. BOB WADDELL, with his broom and pushcart, is finally seeing to it that those sewers are cleaned up. I cannot conscientiously close this report on the destinies of the Class of 1946 without saying that JOHN MARTIN and the writer have read this saga over and agreed that a suicide pact is the best way out.
