In the past the Academian has been pub- lished for the use and pleasure of its readers: the 1942 edition will attempt to achieve this same purpose. This year's board has injected its personal ideas in an effort to make our book an interesting and permanent record of a plea- sant history at Shady Side. lt is the hope of the board that, in these unusually trying times and in the uncertain future, the Academian Will re- rall familiar and happy memories. Q ,vi W , The Class of 1942 This graduating class of 1942 has impressed itself forever upon the indelible memory of Shady Side. The many achievements and successes of its members have tended to create that imprint. Although the members differed widely in their dispositions, they cheerfully banded together in one large group for the benefit of all. lndividual members and organizations of our class have gained national repute in athletic, academic, and extra-curricular fields. ln high school Tom Carr was ranked second among all sprinters in the National Interscholastic Honor Roll. This spring Tom has given every indication of maintaining his fine record in track. Again, described as the best of any student competing over a number of years, Bill Pettit's record in the Annual Current Affairs Test is unique. The Shady Side IVew.r has retained its high rating in national Scholastic newspaper contests by gaining a tirst place rating in the competition sponsored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association of Columbia University. In athletics, scholarship, and leadership our form has excelled. The varsity football team earned the football championship of the Interstate Preparatory School League. Guided by Coach Davis, the basketball team gained similar laurels. Indicative of the many seniors who have achieved high scholastic ratings are the ten students chosen to the Cum Laude Society in February. ln Order to uphold the honored traditions of Shady Side the graduating class rallied around the able leadership of Bill Hackney, President of the School. A fine example of meritorious work has been the leadership of the Student Council in their crystalizing the opinion of the school. More than their deeds could ever have done, however, the fellows themselves in the graduating class of 1942 produced the high calibre of spirit necessary to support their alma mater. fn..--uri U TES - , ?' , ,, f X ,4ff2.-L.,-Ulgaxyx ng: f-QXYKSSM Berk , rr, -kvqwv-xm Jig--.. IJl'FJ'1'lit'l1f of Day Sludenfm . .Day Sludenl Repre.renlal1've The Undergraduates This year, as in every year of Shady Side's history, the graduating class has taken unquestionable lead in the activities of the school. From this fact it might be inferred that every other form was forced to assume a secondary position. Such, however, was not the case, and thus it is the purpose of this page to commemerate the benefits which this year's undergraduates in general, and the Fifth Form in particular, have bestowed upon the school. To begin with, all the leadership exerted by the Sixth Form could have wrought nothing, had they not received the generous cooperation of the entire student body. Every Form, from the Second to the Fifth has given of its repre- sentatives to the utmost so as to afford Shady Side this year with some of its strongest and most active organizations. For this cooperation which made this, our year of 1942 so successful, we, the outgoing class tender our heart-felt thanks. The Fifth Form is particular has aided us immensly throughout the entire past year. Their members on the Student Council, Richard D. Baker. President of the Fifth Form, and Iames Buchanan, Fifth Form representative, have contributed in no small measure to the functioning of the Council, which is essentially a Sixth Form organ for governing the activities of the Academy. ln addition to actually aiding us in the practical government of the school, the present Iunior Class has proved itself more than willing to learn those things necessary for the efficient management of their Alma Mater. Our successors, however, have shown themselves fitted to take over the reins of government by other traits than those exemplified by their Council representatives. In their management of the Annual Commencement Dance, given by the Fifth Form for the Sixth, they showed themselves well able to shoulder the responsibility of maintaining those traditions which endear Shady Side to its students. And finally, the case with which members of the Pre-Graduate Class have fitted into those key positions to which they have been elected proves that the future of all of Shady Side's extra-curricular and governmental organizations is bright. For the above reasons, then, do we leave Shady Side with the feeling that our school is in secure hands. Our only wish is that those who follow will keep, as we have endeavored to keep, the name of Shady Side honorable and out- standing. wmv- ,wmv - , -K M4-f sf--.. 1 HOUSES P 33? Yvilliams The Life of a Boader Promptly at 7:50 every morning'it's never been latenfthe booming peals of the none too welcome rising bell float over the beautiful campus. Turning over for another five minute nap, our dear boarder at 7:50, with a leap into the hall is carried to the washroom by a virtual tide of other late risers. Before he realizes what he is doing, he attempts to wash his face either in a bowl with six others, or in the fountain. This doesn't work, but he'll get a shower in the afternoon. The effects of sleep still show as he attempts to put his shirt on backwards, but with one final desperate effort, he succeeds in arriving at the dining hall'-just as Mr. Laub complicates matters by locking the doors. The few minutes between breakfast and the start of chapel are spent in one gigantic struggle with the sheets, blankets, and chemistry. Next we see our boarder in chapel, where with utter disregard for harmony, and a great deal of interest in English, algebra, and French, he adds what is termed his contribution to the morning hymn. With the refrain of Stand Up, Stand Up for Iesus, along with the sodium atom, 49 French idioms, and an algebraic formula swirling through our poor hero's little brain, he mounts the winding stairway to the sky, where chemistry lab is being held today. The gag for today is a little fumiga- tion with chlorine gas. Still recovering from a lungful of Lane's lucious little trick, our friend walks out of Rowe Hall at 12:07 with a smile on his lips, for it is lunchtime. Mrs. Crosland's chef d'0euvre for the day is fried Allegheny Cod, which is energetically stowed away after the usual group of twenty-one daily announcements. The two periods after lunch laboriously pass, but finally he is freed from the academic worries of the day, unless Mr. Celestin suggests he come in for a few hints on irregular verbs. With finesse and a certain amount of daring, he escapes Mr. Celestin's clutches, only to fall into the more powerful ones of Captain Palmer. The walk to the gym is extremely pleasant for our student, who forgets all rules of civilization and dashes down the hill like the proverbial madman. His pleasure, however, is short lived. Immediately upon his entrance he is greeted by his buddy, Cap Palmer, who slyly and subtley questions our boarder about his wherebouts on the preceding afternoon. ln a ferocious battle of wits, our student's reply nearly knocks Cap over with its super-subtle force: Cap, I was here. So Cap has nothing to do but give in, by dosing out only five instead of seven demerits. After a few hours of soft spoken athletic advice dished our by Coach Davis, a shower, followed by-horseplay in the big red mansion on the hill, takes place. From the end of dinner until 7:50 there is a bull session. From 7:50 until 9:00 there is more bull. . .except for a few prudes who do work. From 9:00 until the 9:45 retiring bell, yes, you've guessed it, more jaw juggling. Ano so finally to bed. Homework??'? Oh, yes, homeworkl Well, he'll do that stuff tomorrow morning between breakfast and The Rock of Ages. , uh . m,..g,,v..g FE TURES thfihg L. pm il f 4 ' ' ' I. - 1 Y Q fl y I jf f J S f-Ap Q -if H NLM I: Th DAY BY DAY SEPTEMBER 18- The opening of school elicited numerous and varied remarks: A new boy, Gee . . . no girlsllu An old boy, VVhat are they? Hunter Sahel Ye Official Class Prophecy This forecast, proved to be 99-44f100fZ, correct despite present indications that our little yellow friends may do something very wicked pretty soon, has been obtained from the Kleer-Vue Crystal Ball and Ouija Board Company. In addition these prophecies, such as they may be, were made for thirty years after Graduation. To begin. . . the board tells us that Charlie defame' and Bob Jlehl, having merged their celebrated all-day sucker company with the licorice firm of Kommer, Phippe, and Blumenfeld, are doing as well as can be expected considering their use of a man like Bill Hackney for a lawyer and Bob Sabel for an accountant. Also entered in the realm of big business is the concern of drmffrong, Black, and Gilmore, which is currently turning out 1,000,000 toothpicks a day under the trade name of The Big Man's Toothpickf' Tom Carr, running a track shoe company, has Dick Sfackhoufe as his chief shoe tester, while Dick W eil and Sam Weff have turned wrestling promoters, giving better bouts to the public under the slogan VVhen worse pugs are unbuilt, we'll tear them apart. Our little prophesier also tells us much about Wall Street, where the Ace Investment and Lose-lt-All Company, under the leadership of Dr. Paul Sleele and Lucky Gerfjzfn 0'Brien is raking in suckers hand over fist. How can they help it with such stalwarts as Frank lVilliam.r and Charlie Campbell herding them in? Prominent on the exchange lately has been the preferred stock of Gimbel Bros. and Company. This unprecedented rise has been attributed to the skillful management of dlan Kaufmann and the advertising campaign of Dave Broido. At this time it might be well to explain that Kappelfr Iewelry Stores Inc.-second generation--have been expanded until you now get 27 instead of 15 weeks to pay. No record can be found of Dunc Brown, Dick Beach, or Bill Pelfif, the last of whom had a brief glow of publicity upon reciting the Sunday New York Times line for line by memory. Rumor has it that these three have all settled down after marriage, and have lost their indentities as individuals. The board would also have us known that while Bud JameJ has opened a sweater and shirt shop called Foster's Fashioneryf' Dave Iiennelffr sporting goods store has been doing nicely, although he often has trouble with his land- lords Bill Carpenter and dldie Cumminge. Jim Blarco has turned novelist, while Tom Comgrove and Jim Reelz have at last found a backer for Colonel Ed Burkehr rocket to the moon. Sources close to the high command say that all scientific books used as research volumes for the project were borrowed from the Bob ,7lunn'.r new personal library, which has also been very useful to lVilli.r Doney in his search for new information on Aristophones. The Crump Con- struction Company has just landed the contract for the remodeling of the llc- Graih-Schoen-Roberlm Building, which was erected back in 1967 in commemoration of the happy days spent by the three owners during their stay at S. S. A. Don Jlaffern, according to latest information, has gone West to star in the new movie saga entitled The Great Man Talked. This super colossal production is being managed by Herb Ilamrmann, directed by Whiley Jlorriwon, and financed by those three angels of the screen Sian Zllalef, John Rea, and Scoll Powenr. Jim Van dckeran has supplanted Barney Oldfield in the world of thrills, with Dick South, his manager, doing his best to keep up with scheduled engagements. Normbo Wl'l!l.dNlJ and Jem Jolznm have just started up an insurance company with a new policy which just dares you to die. Don ,7IaeG'regor has just returned from a rabbit hole in the deep woods where he was making a five year study of the ins and outs of wild life. Lew Dunmfre and Sandy Reed are putting on a combined act of' Nlacbeth and pull-the-rabbit-out-of'-the-hat. Critics are still wondering which is which. 13171 Burke has just opened a tonsorial parlor which specializes in crew-cuts. His first customer was the former beer baron, Bob Priednzan, who had to clip his silken locks to conform with army regulations. Speaking of the army . . . Joe Hardy, Bob Hendenron, and Ben JlcG'1'll have all procured high positions in the intelligence department. Johnny Davzir, newly acclaimed ski champion, is having his position challenged by John Flippen. J. D. .I1Cffl.I'll1l.-l' was last seen in 1945 heading toward the Ohio state line to redeem his 1942 license plates. 1306 Hazlell is on relief after having been tossed off the air for giving inaccurate news reports. Jim Jlfller and Bill Hunzplzrelw have got together to start an airplane manufacturing concern, whose first customers were Charlie Slzerlm, the noted chemist, and I'red .7lc1V1'!l1'am.r, playboy. Lew N1'eLron recovered recently from an attack of sleeping sickness and has lately propounded seven new solid geometry theorems. . . . Formal Tap Days are held on the campus in the fall, winter, and spring, at which time candidates who have met the soCiety'S requirements are tapped, or invited to join, before the whole school. A brief period of pledgeship follows Tap Day, and a secret ritual Ceremony completes the full membership require- ments. NTEIWBERS: D. A great part ofthe proceeds from the annual play were utilized for a donation to the Red Cross and for the purchase of a defense bond in behalf of the Gargoyle Club. IWEIMBERS: C. Each year the twenty per cent of the members of the graduating class who rank highest in scholarship are chosen to the Cum Laude Society. Candidates are required to submit at least two years acredited work at Shady Side: their average must be above eighty per cent to quality for membership. AxlClHlbL'I'S to this Society are chosen usually twice a year, once at the end of the tirst semester, and once at the end ofthe school year. MEMBERS Charles XV. Adams Yvilliam P. Hackney Edward B. Sahel as co-student leaders. Henry L. McGrath succeeded to the business manager's position, while the section leaderships were filled by Arthur B. Schoen, Dale L. Armstrong, Iohn P. Davis Ir., and William A. Bradshaw. Because of the war situation, it became apparent early in the year to Director Robert V. Howard, that the planned 5,000 mile annual southern tour could not be made. None the less, Mr. Howard put the proposition up to his club, number- ing close to 40 voices, of substituting shorter trips to neighboring broadcasting stations such as XVKPA of New Kensington, WHIB of Greensburg, and KDKA of Pittsburgh for the scheduled tropical trip. ln view of the fact that the incentive of the southern trip was lacking. a lessening of enthusiasm might have been expected. ln truth, such was not the case, and rehearsals went on every afternoon from 5:50 to 6:00 until the end of November. The first formal public appearance of the white coated songsters was at the Pittsburgh Field Club as part of a Red Cross Benefit at which their olferings were well received. The second P.A. took place at the University Club during the annual Alumni Smoker. Studio procedure was quite a revelation to many of the new members, seeing the second hand get closer and closer to the expected hour, having the red warning light that the program was on the air begin to glow exactly on the second, and seeing the engineer's hand drop, giving the go-ahead signal made quite a few a bit nervous. The final event on the 1942 schedule, the Washington trip--embellished by a radio program and a luncheon at Arlington Hall on Saturday afternoon, April 19--went off smoothly, with the girls as usual affording their singing visitors a highly enjoyable time.
